Ostrava is selling a unique plot in its city centre to a local company, which in the future will host the tallest building in the Czech Republic. The land along 28. října Street, referred to as Slza will welcome a 60-storey commercial and administrative centre with an adjacent hotel and apartments. Breaking up with the mining heritage of Ostrava An area of almost 8,300 square metres is being purchased by RT Torax for CZK 61.7 million including VAT. The decision to sell the land was made last year in spring, with a minimum offer price set at CZK 37 million (1.38 million euros). The city required the building to have at least twelve floors and to comply with the applicable zoning plan and the basic functional and spatial regulatory conditions of January 2019. According to the Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura there have been projects to construct a high-rise building in the tear-shaped plot, where until 1986 was a coal mine with a coke plant. This year, the National Museum has already prepared the VII. year of the Flašinet žije! festival, which will take place on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. Street artists from various parts of the Czech Republic and Slovakia will enliven the center of Prague with three concerts of different genres. The festival will start at 10.00 with a concert in the church of St. Nicholas on the Old Town Square, where the Baroque church will resound with popular compositions of classical music. At 2 pm, improvised performances by flutists will be heard on Na Kampe Square near Charles Bridge. After the final concert, listeners can take a closer look at the different types of...
A fire tore through an apartment building in the northern Czech Republic on Saturday, killing 11 people, including three children and five others who jumped from the upper floors to escape the blaze, local media reported. The fire broke out at the 11th floor of a 13-story building in the town of Bohumin, on the Czech-Polish border. “There are three adults dead and three children in the apartment,” the head of the Moravian-Silesian fire brigade, Vladimír Vlček told the news site. Five other people died after jumping from the 12th floor, according to Interior Minister Jan Hamáček, who spoke to the Czech public radio. Both Hamáček and the head of the regional government, Ivo Vondrák, suggested the fire is likely to have been set deliberately. Regional fire squad head Vladimír Vlček told Czech Television he did not want to speculate about the causes of the fire for the moment. “But the fire was very quick to develop, which is not normal. A fire like that typically affects one room, but this one hit the entire flat, all the rooms are burnt down,” he said. Vondrák said that besides the victims, thirteen people were injured in the fire, including two firefighters and...
