A group of eight EU countries has joined forces to defend the “role of natural gas in a climate-neutral Europe”. In a joint paper, the group of eight calls for “combined electricity – gas solutions” in the transition to net-zero emissions by 2050. The paper – titled “The role of natural gas in a climate-neutral Europe” – is signed by Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. It makes the case for fossil gas in the transition away from coal power, which is a dominant form of electricity in many eastern EU member states. “When replacing solid fossil fuels, natural gas and other gaseous fuels such as bio-methane and decarbonized gases can reduce emissions significantly,” the paper argues. The European Commission reckons that electricity will meet 53% of the bloc’s energy demand by 2050 as the bloc moves towards reducing emissions to net-zero. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a joint document defining measures to assure the health safety of air travelers and aviation personnel once airlines resume regular flights. The guidance examines each phase of the passenger journey and specifies the actions that need to be taken or measures put in place in six travel segments: before arrival at the airport, in the departure terminal, when boarding, in-flight, in transit and on arrival at the final destination. The European Union Revised Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) has banned the manufacture and sale of menthol cigarettes. The ban includes capsule, click on, click & roll, crush ball or dual menthol cigarettes, and excludes vaping and heated tobacco products. According to a 2015 study, published in the scientific journal Molecular Pharmacology, menthol in combination with tobacco acts as a local anesthetic, which reduces bodily irritation caused by smoking. As a consequence, people tend to inhale deeper and longer, which eventually increases harm. Studies have linked menthol, to increased uptake among young people. A survey in 2018 found that one-in-eight 15-year-olds are smoking regularly. Menthol has also been shown to reduce the likelihood of someone quitting the habit altogether. An appeal against the law change was attempted by Philip Morris, the manufacturer of cigarette brands such as Marlboro, but it was rejected by the European Court of Justice (ECHO). The Czech Senate condemned the crimes against humanity committed by Nazis during WW2 and the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire 105 years ago in a resolution on Wednesday, Ceske Noviny reports. “At its plenary session on May 20, the Senate of the Czech Republic unanimously adopted a resolution on the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the atrocities committed against humanity during the two world wars, including the condemnation of the Armenian Genocide,” the statement noted. Greece will restart its tourism season on June 15 in a key boost to the economy after the virus lockdown, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Wednesday, adding that international flights would resume on July 1.
