Brexit: Measures and Precautions You Need to Take

On 31 January 2020, the formal departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union took effect. Subsequently, on 1 February began a transition period to reach an agreement on trade, aviation rules and other issues related to Brexit which will go on until the end of 2020. Tatra Around the World Expedition Sets Off From Prague

Can you drive 270,000 km around the world in three years? The organizers of the “Tatra kolem světa 2” (Tatra around the world 2) action want to find it out. Their idea refers directly to the famous Tatra 815 GTC expedition, which took place in the second half of the 80s in the 20th century. The project aims is to promote the Czech industry abroad, such as 3D printing, virtual reality, and carbon products. They will be received almost in every country where Czechia has a governmental trade agency. The expedition’s cost is estimated at 25 million CZK. A majority is funded by co-organizers Marek Havlicek and Petr Holecek, and some 3 million CZK have been crowd-funded. In 1987, as part of the “Tatra kolem světa” project, a crew of five people drove in a special Tatra 815 GTC truck for 200,000 km in just three years. The participants of that expedition visited 67 countries and travelled across five continents. Over 590,000 Foreigners in the Czech Republic

The number of foreigners staying permanently or temporarily in the Czech Republic rose by 28,950 to 595,881 last year, according to a report released by the interior ministry on migration trends in the last quarter of 2019. Almost half of the registered foreigners (295,197) have temporary residence, the rest have permanent residence (300,684). Half of the foreigners holding temporary residence permits applied for employment (50.7 percent), family reunion (16.8 percent), study (6.8 percent) and business (6.3 percent). The Czech Foreign Police detected 5,677 illegally foreigners staying in the Czech Republic, 685 more than in 2018. The largest groups were Ukrainians, Moldovans, and Vietnamese. Even though Ukraine already benefits from a visa-free arrangement with the Schengen Member States, 1,456 Ukrainians remained in the Czech Republic beyond the permitted period by the Schengen rules of stay. In the last quarter of 2019, 42,227 migrants arrived illegally in Europe: 35,463 by sea (Spain, Italy, Greece, Malta, and Cyprus) and 6,764 by land. Compared to the same period in 2018, arrivals by sea went up by around 8.1 percent, but down by 7.6 percent compared to the previous quarter. In 2019, a total of 118,327 people arrived illegally in Europe.

Czechs Still Don’t Understand How the EU Works

Most Czechs see the European Union subsidies as economically beneficial, but they know almost nothing about the way they are distributed, according to a poll conducted by the STEM polling institute. “Czechs have a very vague idea of ​​the ratio of payments and revenues of the Czech Republic to and from the EU budget. Almost half of the citizens (45 percent) simply do not know, nor dare to estimate, how much money the Czech Republic receives from the EU. Thirteen percent of Czechs even think we contribute more than we receive. Eighteen percent think we contribute as much as we receive,” says the poll. Primark to Open a Second Store in Brno

Primark retail chain will open its first store on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street. The Irish apparel brand is set to open its doors next May. The 4,700 sqm store is likely to attract not just crowds of tourists to the top of the iconic square, but many Czechs as well who were previously willing to travel to Dresden just to see what deals the price-conscious store had to offer. Amazon and Netflix Among the Biggest Spenders in the Czech Republic

Film incentives in the Czech Republic attracted double the number of productions last year compared to 2018. Almost 80 international productions, encompassing both films and series, were shot in the Czech Republic, generating revenues of €363 million (CZK 9 billion), while the largest proportion was spent by streaming giants Netflix and Amazon. Among the most significant projects shot in 2019 were the second season of Amazon’s steampunk gothic fantasy Carnival Row, starring Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom (shot primarily in Prague), and the epic high-fantasy show The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Production work on both projects will continue during 2020 as well. “Foreign productions alone almost doubled in comparison to 2018, and are at their highest peak since we began monitoring this particular indicator. For the state, it is most advantageous to provide as many film incentives as possible because higher incentives generate higher returns for the Czech economy,” says Helena Bezděk Fraňková, director of the Czech Film Fund.
