The farmer’s markets at Náplavka are reopening on February 1st after a brief winter break The Náplavka market, in its eleventh season, has proven popular with both local residents and tourist, especially when the weather by the waterfront at Rašínovo nábřeží is pleasant. “During the first market this year, there will be no honest and handmade sausages and sausages from Mr. Marounek, craft pâtés and pickled meat from Plzák z Plzně. You can taste and buy the popular cannoli and cakes from a Karlovy Vary confectionery, meringues and other delicacies from Krámek U Andělky bakery,” said Jiří Sedláček, Chairman of Archetyp Association, who runs the Náplavka farmers’ market. Mr. Sedláček also co-founded the Association of Farmer’s Markets, which defines the ethics and criteria for sales and products, overseeing the origin, transparency, and selection of traditional Czech products for markets. According to the association’s code, farmers’ markets should offer products from domestic (Czech) farms and mainly from regional production. Fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, flowers, honey, eggs, meats, and bread are some of the main products sold. Farmers and producers are selected on the basis of a questionnaire and personal visits to the farms. The market at Náplavka is tied to the...
Prague City Hall is trying to fight the visual smog and has prepared new rules to restore the historic heart of the city. Because of the advertisement display, the city center is already avoided by professional photographers. “Hundreds of photographers send us photos. But Karlova Street in the center, for example, is not very photographed,” says David Černý, writer and founder of the photographic project Miluju Prahu. “There’s one signboard next to another, it’s like Times Square. It’s all about the people who run it,” he added. In December, the municipality has prepared rules for marking establishments that will help reduce visual smog. “For example, we do not want the shop windows to be covered by 100 percent or blinking inscriptions. If a shop has an advertisement display behind the glass, it is no longer affected legislation, but the visual impression from the street is exactly the same. Prague 1 has already approved it, the other city districts will probably do the same,” said City Councilor Hana Třeštíková (Praha sobě). “We do not want different advertisements and other visuals or objects that parasitize public spaces in Prague,” added the Mayor Zdeněk Hřib last September. According to the new rules, the...

Eight people died and thirty were injured in a fire at a Czech home for people with disabilities on Sunday, according to local media. Czech Television reported that the fire occurred at the northwestern town of Vejprty that borders Germany. Prokop Volenik, the spokesman for the regional rescue service, said that the fire broke out at around 5 a.m. local time and one of the injured is in critical condition. Czech media said the fire which was now under control was reported at 0349 GMT. “The fire broke out in the boys’ section of a home for the mentally handicapped,” said Jitka Gavdunova, the mayor of Vejprty, a small town on the German border some 100 kilometers northwest of Prague. Originally, rescuers said the fire had occurred at a nearby home for the elderly. Rescuers from neighboring Germany came to help their Czech colleagues who were not able to use helicopters due to bad weather. Prime Minister Andrej Babis called the fire “a terrible tragedy”, saying on Twitter that police and firefighters were doing their utmost. Probably the fire started in one room and that most of those killed died from smoke inhalation.
Australians have been battling devastating wildfires since September of last year. More than 13 million acres have burned across the country as firefighters and emergency responders continue to battle the blazes. The football club Bohemians Praha 1905 decided to support Australia. The club will collect the money during the home game against Slavia Prague on February, 16th. “We are also preparing special souvenirs that will be on sale at the fan shop”, explained club spokesman Jan Strýhal. “Furthermore, part of the sale from the magazines and game tickets will be donated”, he added. The football club from Vršovice is historically connected with Australia. In May 1927, Prague club AFK Vrsovice undertook a long tour of Australia, playing 19 matches in several states, winning 13 and drawing three. The Czech side drew many fans to its games and the tour became a huge success but only after promoters insisted the touring team be called ‘Bohemians’. At the end of the tour, the club was presented with two live kangaroos, which took home to Prague and donated to the city zoo. The visitors to Australia were so taken by the warmth of their hosts that they made the temporary ‘Bohemians’ nickname their official...
Czech President Milos Zeman’s decision to skip China’s summit with European leaders in April shows the “honeymoon is over” between Prague and Beijing, analysts say, as it tries to shake up the relationship to push for more investment. And China could face similar trouble with other nations looking for more at this year’s “17+1” summit with Central and Eastern European nations in Beijing. Top leaders usually attend the gathering, but Zeman on Sunday said he would not be going, and that China had not “done what it promised” by failing to invest more in his country. He would instead send Deputy Prime Minister Jan Hamacek, which he said was “adequate to the level of cooperation”. At last year’s summit in Croatia, Prague was represented by Prime Minister Andrej Babis, who was diplomatically on par with the Chinese representative, Premier Li Keqiang. But it is China’s turn this year, and President Xi Jinping will be the host – meaning heads of state are expected to attend. The 17+1 grouping was launched by Beijing in 2012. Zeman was a strong advocate for deepening economic ties with China and investments were on the rise, for a time. But Zeman and other Czech leaders...
A butcher’s shop on Biskupska street, Prague 1-Nove Mesto, was used for the production and distribution of methamphetamine after hours. The State Veterinary Administration ordered the destruction of meat that could have been contaminated. The butchery also banned further operations.
In this spy thriller, Marie (Tána Pauhofová) and her husband Victor (Martin Myšicka) return from exile to Czechoslovakia on the cusp of the Velvet Revolution — but when the couple gets in a car accident, Marie wakes up from a coma to find her husband mysteriously gone. The pair are joining Tatiana Pauhofová (Burning Bush) in the six-part drama, which was previously known as Oblivious. The series, which is set in 1980s Prague, was filmed in the Czech capital with additional filming in London. The Sleepers (Bez Vedomi) was written by newcomer Ondřej Gabriel, who studied political science at Prague’s Charles University before becoming a playwright, and directed by Ivan Zacharias, the Czech filmmaker behind HBO Europe’s Wasteland. Directed by Ivan Zachariáš and Ondřej Gabrie, the miniseries tells the story of a Czech dissident couple, Marie and Victor (played by Tatiana Pauhofová and Martin Myšička), who decide to return to their homeland after spending a decade in political exile in London. Zacharias recalled the turbulent events of a year that swept away the decades-long reign of a one-party rule in Czechoslovakia. “That was a big year. It was a huge change when the communist system finally broke down,” he said. Like...
