The Tour de France has started five times abroad over the past eight years. Soon, the beginning of the most famous cycling race could take place in Prague. “Prague is a beautiful city, one of the most beautiful capitals. If it stands, we will judge it with the greatest possible attention,” said the general director of the legendary race, Christian Prudhomme. The lead course designer, Thierry Gouvenou, confirmed that Prague could enter the game of organizing the Tour. “I know that the City of Prague has already established contacts with our organizing agency ASO,” informed Gouvenou at the end of July. Prague Airport has introduced a long-term concept and development of the airport as a response to the increasing number of passengers in recent years. The Ministry of Finance approved the investment in the first stage of the enlargement of Terminal 2 of approximately CZK 16 billion. About CZK 9 billion is invested directly in the extension of the terminal, while the remaining CZK 7 billion in related constructions, such as taxiways, a parking or an elevated road and other traffic routes in front of the terminal. Andrej Babis said Wednesday the Vaclav Havel Airport is planning to expand its Terminal 2, which currently serves flights to the visa-free Schengen zone countries, and will build a new runway by 2028, among other things. “The development will be financed from the airport’s resources and will not burden the national budget in any way. The projects will lead to the modernization of the airport and make the transport more efficient to maintain high passenger comfort,” says Alena Schillerová, Minister of Finance. Prague is the second fastest developing city in the European Union, thanks to aid from world trade exposure and high increase in the educated workforce. This stems from the CEE Investment Report entitled “Thriving Metropolitan Cities,” which analyzed 200 cities and ranked them according to GDP per capita, “human capital,” and city connectivity based on the number of passengers at local airports. To solve both problems, the City of Prague 3 project offers students an affordable rent of a municipal apartment for 30 hours a month looking after the elderly in a nursing home. “We believe that the project that has just started will bring two generations closer together and bring different perspectives on the present we are living,” says Deputy Mayor of Prague 3, Ondřej Rut (Green Party). In return, students have to spend 30 hours a month with residents of a nursing home for a discounted flat rental. The Czech Republic ranks 4th among other OECD countries in terms of alcohol consumption. The report used data from 2017, at which time Czechs consumed an average of 11.6 liters of absolute alcohol per year each. Pure alcohol is measured as one millilitre for every percentage of the drink’s strength if there is 100ml of it. A litre of 37.5 per cent vodka, for example, contains 375ml of pure alcohol. While a pint of five per cent strength lager would contain 28.4ml of pure alcohol. Lithuania was first in the ranking with 12.3 liters of absolute alcohol drunk by each person. The OECD average was 8.9 liters. The report points out that alcohol consumption has fallen compared to 2007 in almost all countries of the OECD. Alcohol dependence is most common in Latvia, Hungary, and Russian Federation (more than 9% of adults), according to the OECD data. While Turkey, Israel, India, Costa Rica, Mexico and Colombia made up the bottom of the table, all drinking fewer than five litres each. A new residential project in Prague 6 appears to be going beyond the usual boundaries of what is seen as a luxury, with its total value estimated at over CZK 1bn. “The price of hyper-luxury real estate starts at around CZK 150m,” the project’s architect Jakub Masak told Hospodářské noviny. “There are very few of these properties on the Czech market, though interest in them is growing at a far faster tempo.” The most expensive of the new villas will likely cost CZK 350m, with the construction of the first phase due to begin next year. The three-floor building will offer 750 sqm of space, including a glass stairway, a private park and an elevator. Five mansions of between 430 sqm and 530 sqm will then be built worth CZK 750m, each of which will feature a historic stone fireplace and hand-worked beams. The Czech Republic commemorates the anniversary of the end of World War I on 11 November 1918 as the Veteran Day. In Prague, war veterans will be remembered on Náměstí Míru square at an event organized by the local town hall in cooperation with the Association of Veterans of the Czech Republic, the Czech Army Military History Institute and the Czechoslovak Legionnaires Community. In the morning, the memorial celebration will be given over to schoolchildren, some of whom will participate in performances. The main program will start at 2 pm and will be opened by Prague 2 Mayor Jana Černochová together with representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Czech Armed Forces. Military equipment will be shown to the public by soldiers, and a sextet of musicians will perform. Stalls will have products with military themes. Prague’s Charles University is being shaken by a scandal over secret Chinese payments to four of its faculty members, amid concerns that Beijing could use its ties with some Czech politicians to build influence in academia. The university, one of the world’s oldest academic institutions, fired Milos Balaban, until recently head of the university’s Centre for Security Policy (SBP), and two other members of the social sciences faculty last week. The move came after the school discovered they had set up a private company under the name of SBP which was paid by the Chinese embassy for conferences co-organised by the university centre. The payments, first revealed by Czech news outlet Aktualne, have triggered a university probe of several companies owned by Mr Balaban, Mirka Kortusová, a financial and project manager at the CSP, and Libor Stejskal and Jan Ludvík, two research fellows at the centre.
