A man has become the first African American patient to receive a full face transplant – after suffering horrific burns to 60 percent of his body. Robert Chelsea, 68, from California, had been waiting six years for the procedure while doctors tried to find a donor with the same skin tone. In August 2013, Chelsea was driving to church in the fast lane on a summer night when his car overheated. He was on the side of the Interstate when a drunken driver collided with his vehicle. “My car went up in the air, and when it came down, it blew up,” he said. The inferno burned Chelsea severely. “They laid me on a gurney, and I closed my eyes to rest, Chelsea said. “When I woke up, it was six months later.”. After waking up from a coma, he spent another nine months in the hospital. He was released on November 2014 after undergoing more than 30 surgeries. But his lips, part of his nose, and left ear were unable to be reconstructed. Robert was scheduled to have a face transplant in March 2018, but doctors failed to find a donor with matching skin tone, as only 14 percent...
The auto firm Škoda has been named as the Czech Republic’s most sustainable company in an evaluation carried out by the national government. Škoda has been a sustainable and responsible business since its foundation in 1895. Every year, the company invests millions of Czech crowns in charity and social projects. When carrying out the evaluation, the government also took into account cooperation with local companies and NGOs, regional impact, innovation, community care, and volunteering. An example highlighted by the government is the Škoda Auto University, founded in 2000, which remains the only company university in the Czech Republic. “We are changing the government’s relationship with investors,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček. “Instead of restricting and raising taxes, we motivate them to invest in developing and supporting the environment around them. That is why we recently established the National Development Fund and therefore we appreciate the most responsible investors, the most respectful of the environment and the ones with the largest social impact.”
Prague City will plant 25,718 trees in autumn. Most of them will be added in Běchovice and Jinonice areas.
The Czech Tax Administration has introduced controls and checks on taxi drivers using the shared-economy platforms Uber, Bolt and Liftago, to detect fraud related to non-payment of income tax, value-added tax and road tax, as reported by daily E15 on October 23. This will last for months and will cover the past three years. “We will compare the tax returns of entities with their income, which we are able to obtain through the mobile application of individual services,” said Lukas Hertus from the press department of the General Financial Directorate, as daily cited, adding that penalties for non-payment could run to 20% of the amounts defrauded. “We know about inspections and we work with the responsible authorities. We prevent drivers from committing fraud by providing them with decent earnings,” said Liftago’s Director Ondrej Kratky. Liftago is a Czech start-up, which created a technology platform to optimize urban transport in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It works with certified taxi drivers only. In 2018, it increased its turnover by one-third to almost CZK300mn (€11.7mn) last year.
Sculpture by the Sea is delighted to announce that a showcase of 10 acclaimed Czech and Slovak artists will exhibit at this year’s Bondi exhibition in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, which marked the ending of over 30 years of totalitarian Communist rule. The showcase will join over 100 sculptures from around the world on Sydney’s breathtaking 2km Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2019, the world’s largest annual free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition, running from 24 October – 10 November. “It is an honour to work with the Czech and Slovak artists to present this showcase in celebration of the end of a dreadful period of their history,” said Sculpture by the Sea founding director, David Handley. “I lived in Prague for a few years shortly after the end of communist rule. It was a time of wonderful, lively freedom. During this time, I ‘got’ the drama and theatricality of sculpture thanks to an exhibition staged by Vaclav Fiala. This led directly to the first exhibition of Sculpture by the Sea. Twenty three years later and 30 years after the revolution we are celebrating together in a happy go lucky exhibition...
From the beginning of January to the end of September 2019, castles, fortresses and other sights, which are maintained by the Czech state, were visited by the record number of 4.6 million people. The castle which was of the greatest interest among tourists this year is Lednice, with 350,000 visitors. The second most popular was Český Krumlov castle, which 330,000 people visited. Third place, with 250,000 tourist visitors was the castle Hluboka. The statistics are kept on the number of tickets sold. Which means that it can not account for all the visitors that came to look at the castles but did not go inside. The Švihov chateau has been visited by 11.5 thousand visitors more compared to last year. The chateau in Vranov nad Dyjí has also seen a significant increase (9,000 more than in 2018). What will be behind the round windows on the Prague riverside? Twenty wall cubicles will contain galleries, studios, and cafés. The Open Day shows visitors the repaired areas, in a provisional regime though, as the renewed dungeons opened to the public yesterday and today (October 24th). They should start regular service in November, as the full procedure is not possible yet due to an unfinished occupancy permit process. After completing the occupancy permit process and moving to regular services, these new facilities will quickly host their visitors and survive the flood in the upcoming winter. The organizers have also prepared guided tours or a boat ride between the two riverbanks. On both embankments, there should now be three galleries, three studios, three toilets, two workshops or a branch of the Municipal Library. The rest will be filled with cafes. Tenants and operators of individual cubicles will show their future functioning. They are modernly equipped for the flood season the whole year. Their most distinctive element is the circular glass, which acts as a revolving door. The movement is controlled by the sensors and motor so that it opens and closes quickly and prevents collisions with visitors.

Thanks to the latest project of the Czech studio DDAANN and Lukáš Otevřel, virtually anyone can uncheck the first two tasks, thus giving them the opportunity to fulfill their third mission. Building your own house in the suburbs of a larger city can be very costly and up to many millions of crowns. Hence, post-construction is often accompanied by many compromises and concessions, making the resulting house not as comfortable as the owners originally imagined. An increasing number of people, and in other places, living in these dwellings are forming their own communities. This phenomenon arrived in the Czech Republic quite recently and it is still in its very beginnings. DONE and it’s done! Tiny house can be a real style, evidenced by the latest domestic project called Tiny House DONE, which allows an owner to not only own housing but the possibility to build their own house, as well.
