Prague Castle remains to be the most popular tourist destination in the Czech Republic, according to figures put together by Czech Tourism agency. Last year, it attracted over 2.4 million tourists, a nearly three-percent increase year-on-year. The first 3 tourist destinations in 2018: Prague Castle (2.4 million visitors) Petrin funicular (2.07 million visitors) Prague zoo (1.4 million visitors) While Prague Castle may be a given, some surprises made the diverse list of locations—which includes plenty of destinations beyond Prague—from the industrial sights of Dolní Vítkovice, to the zoo in Zlín and Aqualand Moravia. CzechTourism also released some other rankings, aside from the top 50 list. The most popular architectural site was Obecní dům (the Municipal House) in Prague. The most popular memorial site was the ossuary at the Church of All Saints in Kutná Hora – Sedlec. Prague Castle was the most popular castle. The most popular museum was Forest, Game and Fishing Museum at zámek Ohrada in Hluboká nad Vltavou. Other popular places include the Jewish Museum, the National Theater, Žižkov Television Tower, Průhonice Park, the National Technical Museum. When Unibail-Rodamco acquired Westfield last year, one of its aims was to leverage the hallowed Westfield mall brand among its European Holdings. Today, the combined Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield named the first 10 Westfields on the continent. Seven of them are in France: Westfield Les Quatre Temps; Westfield Forum des Halles; Westfield Vélizy 2; Westfield Parly 2; Westfield Carré Sénart, Westfield Rosny 2 in the Paris region, and Westfield Euralille in Lille. Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic will host the remaining three: Westfield Arkadia in Warsaw, Westfield Mall of Scandinavia in Stockholm, and Westfield Chodov in Prague. The shopping center in Chodov underwent an extensive reconstruction two years ago and is currently the largest one in Prague with 300 shops. It opened on November 9, 2005. “As the only global brand in the industry, the introduction of Westfield will enhance the value and positioning of our destinations across Continental Europe [and provide] an international platform for retailers to enter new markets,” said URW group CEO Christophe Cuvillier in a press release announcing the locations. Benthem Crouwel Architects has been announced as the winner of a competition to design a new residential district in Prague, presented in collaboration with local firm RA15. The competition, organized by Penta Real Estate, saw 160 entries distilled down to 44, and then 5 finalists. In a unanimous verdict, the jury praised Benthem Crouwel’s decision to integrate a large, publically-accessible park into the project. The new residential complex is located in Nádraží Žižkov area, situated between a former freight station with abandoned train tracks and a more urban, lively city landscape. The design strikes a balance between functionality, a human scale, and contact with nature, with the placement of apartment buildings at the edge of the plot creating a large open central park. The park is open to residents and locals, serving as a communal space for people to connect, relax, and enjoy the outdoors, while also offering a biodiverse environment where local species and plants can thrive. The modular efficiency and straightforward design principles allow for the creation of a verity of apartments in different sizes, accommodating a diverse set of residents. Proposals to re-erect a Baroque column with a Marian statue in Old Town Square has led to a religious controversy. A group of Catholics and Prague history enthusiasts hope to erect in the city’s central Old Town Square a replica of the original column built in the 1650s and torn down in 1918. Its height reached almost 14 m and on the top, there was a two meters high golden-plated statue of Virgin Mary, in the corners of the stone railings there were four groups of angels fighting with evil forces. The column was viewed as a symbol of the Habsburg empire. It was erected to commemorated Prague’s defenders against the Protestant Swedish army at the end of the Thirty Years War of 1618-1648. The Marian Column was also very important for time determination because its shadow was showing the high noon during its fall over the Prague Meridian. In the past, similar plans to re-erect the column were stopped under both Nazi and Communist rule when many Czechs turned away from the Catholic Church. Jakub originally comes from Martin (Northern Slovakia). He studied film editing and sound engineering. Back in his home country, he was running summer cinemas and a music club. Recently, he moved to Prague as an opportunity came up in the shape of a 70m long boat, which wasn’t being used much at the time. The idea was to open an 80-seat cinema on it with a friendly atmosphere for film lovers to share their passion and hang out. As a Slovak, he feels at home in Prague. Not only are the languages very similar and people understand each other mutually, but he also loves the fact that everything can be found in Prague. The concept of “overtourism” has gained so much traction over the last few years, it was even named as one of the Oxford Dictionary’s 2018 Words of the Year. Now, 20 more cities are on alert lest they turn into the future face of the problem, according to a new report from the World Travel & Tourism Council and commercial real estate firm JLL. The report, called “Destination 2030,” examines the tourism “readiness” of 50 destinations around the world and groups cities into five types. The “emerging performers” category includes destinations where infrastructure and tourism momentum are growing along with the pressures associated with more tourists. Those cities were Bangkok; Cape Town, South Africa; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Istanbul; Jakarta, Indonesia; Mexico City; and New Delhi. Another 13 cities — called “mature performers” — were described as having an established tourism infrastructure, strong leisure or business travel, and good positioning to manage current growth levels. “But there is a risk of future strains related to visit volume, infrastructure or activity that is testing readiness for additional growth,” the report said. The heat wave starts after Sunday when a powerful upper ridge develops over Europe. As soon as the omega pattern establishes, strong warm advection should take place with a ‘Spanish plume’ from SW Europe. Models are trending with very extreme temperature anomaly for the near-surface layers, locally reaching 12-16 °C above normal for late June. On Thursday, the heat wave would eventually peak over Germany with local temperatures ever approaching 40 °C while on Friday, a cold front might push from the west and finish the heat wave, but the excessive heat would then push towards the Alpine region and Poland / Czech Republic as well. Extreme heat could develop over some areas, locally reaching 35-40 °C in the afternoons next week. Such anomalous temperatures would likely break June records in some areas. Prague has experienced its hottest summer last year, with an average temperature of 22.7° C. Before, the hottest summer was recorded in 2003 with an average temperature of 22.4 degrees, followed by 2015, when the average temperature reached 22.3 degrees Celsius in June, July and August. Prague will host an event for all Italian tin-wasp enthusiasts. This year, it’ll take place one month earlier than usual – from Friday, 21st till Sunday, 23rd of June 2019. The traditional meeting of the Vespa owners from various countries takes place at the Dzban site near an artificial lake. “We have participants from the neighboring countries, Poland, Austria, and Germany. There is also one woman from Italy who drove some 1000 kilometres alone on the way to Prague, and some Dutch people. We are still waiting for one from Albania,” said Simon, vice-president of Vespa Club Prague. Some participants have brand new Vespas, while others are looking after their scooters for years carefully. Several fans drive even historical Vespa scooters from the 1950s. The scooter’s name means “wasp” in Italian as its engine sounds like a wasp’s buzzing. Others point to the scooter’s shape that resembles this black-yellow insect. I like hidden places and Kinského zahrada in Prague is one of them. The gardens seem to be part of Petřín, a huge hill with this miniature Eiffel tower sitting on the top, but are more private, hidden behind a wall. Gardens were rebuilt in the English style in the 19th century (I read this fact while writing this article) and it probably explains why I see people having picnics on the lawn and why the place feels to me instinctively English. Kinského zahrada is all about great views too. I don’t know why people love views so much…does it make us feel on the top of the world and all the things on it? Is it the combination of the magnificent and scary? I’m not sure myself, but I love them. And Prague is, thanks to its hilly nature, very generous with views. You have to climb up a bit to catch the best views. The consumption of medicinal cannabis in the Czech Republic continued to grow in the past years, according to information at a symposium held here Monday. The symposium was organized by the Drug Policy Department of the Office of the Government in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the State Institute for Drug Control. By the end of May this year, cannabis was prescribed at least once and issued to 665 patients in the country. The number of registered doctors for cannabis prescription has also multiplied, and almost 100 are currently prescribed for medicinal cannabis. In 2018, 4,800 grams of medicinal cannabis were issued, almost four times more than in 2017. Since the beginning of this year, 5,347 grams of cannabis have been released for medical use. Nearly 90 percent of the total amount of cannabis is currently being used to treat chronic intractable pain, followed by multiple sclerosis. Cannabis treatment in the Czech Republic will be largely financed through public health insurance by next year. The Administration of Prague Castle, the presidential seat, has leased the late-Gothic Vladislav Hall, used for official ceremonies, for commercial purposes for the first time, in particular to the Louis Vuitton French fashion brand. Next week, Louis Vuitton will hold a gala dinner for its clients and launch its exhibition of a new collection of jewels in Vladislav Hall, where the Czech heads of state are inaugurated and the president annually presents state orders and medals on the national holiday, October 28. The French firm will pay 605,000 euros including VAT for the lease. The Vladislav Hall, which is almost 500 years old, is one of the most important parts of Prague Castle because some of the most significant national events have taken place there. The chamber first served as the Hall of Homage to the Czech kings. The hall was mainly used for ceremonial purposes, where homage was paid to monarchs after coronation ceremonies. Assemblies of the Bohemian Estates also took place in the Vladislav Hall.
