According to officials, it wasn’t done by the company the city selected to do it and nobody else claimed the responsibility yet. Graffiti on Charles Bridge, which restorers began removing on Saturday, disappeared unexpectedly overnight. “The restorers worked on the site on Saturday until five o’clock in the afternoon. When they arrived at 10:00 in the morning the day after, the graffiti were removed,” TSK spokesman said. Tests are now underway to determine whether the substance used had damaged the stones of the centuries old monument. Two foreigners both from Germany were arrested on Monday evening, July 22 while spray-painting a five-meter long and two-meter high graffiti on the Charles Bridge. They were caught in the act after a bystander called the police. The two mischief-makers have been fined 100,000 Kc each (around 4,000 euros) and ordered to cover up the cost of cleaning and restoration. The Charles Bridge is currently undergoing an extensive reconstruction that could last for up to 20 years. Graffiti on national monuments is rare but not unknown: A Japanese tourist in December 2014 painted on an underpass that was part of the National Theater. In October 2014, a French tourist painted teeth and a tongue on the National Theater itself. The...
Located in a whimsical part of Prague that many tourists do not venture to, is the abandoned Vyšehrad Train Station. This Art Nouveau gem sits quietly in her old grandeur, a crumbling boarded up beauty laden with grafiti just waiting (like many other gorgeous structures in the city of Prague) for a new facelift. The neighborhood is beautiful as well as it is surrounded by the Cubist homes of Vyšehrad such as the Kovarovic Villa, the ancient Vyšehrad fortress, the fabled Vltava River and the Charles University Botanic Gardens. As it is no longer in use as a train station it could more than likely be used for a social complex with cafes, kiosks and gallery space. A bit of history… The project to build a railway station in the Vysehrad district was set up in 1867 in connection with the proposal to build the Prague connecting line. It was to connect the Smichov railway station with the railway station of Franz Joseph (today the main railway station). It was completed in 1870 and two years later, the operation on the intersection was commenced. In 1960, it was turned into a dump and since then the station building has been unused. After 1989...
Are you in Prague and tired of historic houses, thousand of tourists and full restaurants? Go hiking. In Prague, yes. No problem. And you don’t have to go far from the city centre. There is a beautiful rocky spot above the Podolí swimming pool and you can secretly watch the summer laziness from here and enjoy the beauty of nature. But be warned – this is real wilderness, so no high heels! You can get to Podolský profil either from the Vltava river bank (which means using trams or buses), look closely at Podolí Waterworks and go up – don’t worry, it’s easy and a nice path and you navigate there by using Google Maps, or you can go from the other side of the city. Just use the underground, go to Pankrác and then it’s at your feet. Podolský profil is a really nice lookout, there are nice paths and rocks and lots of butterflies too, and you can enjoy not only the river and city view but also the beauty of the Podolí Swimming Pool built in 1965 according to functionalist tradition, all from an unexpected angle. Being a wanderlust is never a gender-specific feeling, and time has proven it right. With many women now becoming independent and having a feminist ideology of their own, traveling solo has become the latest trend. Many women are coming forward to plan their travel days internationally and even to challenging destinations. However, women-friendly places are a big priority for solo travelers to ensure safety and security. Malaga in Spain has been recognized as the most women-friendly travel destination in the world for 2019, according to a survey by the CEOWORLD magazine, while Prague (Czech Republic) and Tokyo (Japan) placed second and third, respectively. The data come from an annual survey of 85,000 solo female travelers and 9,000 travel agents in 82 countries commissioned by the CEOWORLD magazine. The study was conducted over three months, from January 20 – April 19, 2019. The 2019 rankings placed China’s Chengdu in fourth ahead of the Indian capital city of New Delhi into fifth; while Bangkok ranked sixth, and Reykjavik in Iceland seventh. Overall, among the top 10 best places to travel alone for females, the eighth, ninth, and tenth positions are held by Rome, Melbourne, and the New York City. There is some...

The Prague CEE CUP is about to kick off its 9th edition on July 24th. This time around, a myriad of football scouts will be present at the U19 football. Besides the local Sparta and Slavia players, they will also get to see other interesting talents from abroad. According to the first names reported, it is expected that a number of representatives will be in Dinamo Zagreb, Beşiktaş Istanbul or Shakhtar Donetsk, which are Sparta’s rivals in Group A. For example, the Zagreb team is the home of the offensive midfielder Edin Jularjija, a Croatian youth who is one of the youngest players in the line-up that helped push Dinamo’s promotion to the Youth League quarterfinals. The fast-paced South American footballers should once again amaze the spectators in the matches of Palmeiras, which is one of Slavia’s rivals in Group B, which will be complemented by the English Burnley and Turkish Altinordu. In this group, Brazilian striker Fabricio, who, according to overseas media is threatening Sao Jesolo’s goal record set by Gabriel Jesus (currently a Manchester City player), should be among the most-watched players. We will present a wider list of players, who should not fail to get the attention of...
The Prague 1 District Court gave two German tourists a one-year suspended sentence for spraying on the 14th century Charles Bridge, the oldest bridge in Prague, and expelled them from the Czech Republic for five years, court spokeswoman Pavla Hajkova has told CTK. The perpetrators must also pay a 100,000-crown fine and cover the damage of 40,000 crowns each. The two men, aged 23 and 30, were caught by police spraying a 5-by-2 meter logo on a stone bridge support. A local resident saw them in action and called the police. Zdeněk Hřib, the mayor of Prague, condemned the act, saying that “spraying Charles bridge is a complete cultural barbarism”. The mayor also reminded that there were several places in Prague where it was perfectly legal to create graffiti. Graffiti on national monuments is rare but not unknown: A Japanese tourist in December 2014 painted on an underpass that was part of the National Theater. In October 2014, a French tourist painted teeth and a tongue on the National Theater itself. The Astronomical Clock Tower has also been damaged by vandals on several occasions. Author: red
This year’s Prague Pride will parade through Prague Center on Saturday the 10th of August. The route will stay the same as previous years, with the starting point at Václavské Náměstí to Letná. The approximate number of participants is 30 thousand people celebrating the lives of the LGBTQIA+ community. The festival with a parade first happened in August 2011. Back then it attracted a will conundrum of conservative people protesting against it, as according to them it was an obscene showcase that was trying to force the idea of homosexuality on them. This phrase was also used by at the time president Václav Klaus, which according to him, it was something that needed to be fought against. Fortunately, the protests kept getting weaker and weaker with every passing year and now Prague Pride participants can feel safer than in previous years. The festival will begin on Monday the 5th of August and will last until the Sunday of the 11th, the program, however, has still not been released. The carnival parade will go from Václavské Náměstí through the street Na Příkopě to náměstí Republiky, from there it will continue through Revoluční, Řásnovka, and Klášterská to Dvořákovo nábřeží. The parádě will...
The City of Prague has undertaken an inventory of its housing fund and the apartments it owns. The analysis showed that the city, along with the city districts, manages over 31,000 apartments. Of these 31,000 municipal dwellings, nearly 8% are currently unoccupied. The analysis also showed that the municipal housing fund in Prague is relatively small compared to other cities. For the first time ever, complete data was obtained on the city’s housing stock in all 57 municipal districts through an initiative led by the City Councillor for Housing, Adam Zábranský. An analysis by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) showed that out of a total of 31,456 municipal apartments, 2,409 are unoccupied. Many of these empty apartments are in poor condition and would require renovation before they could be rented. Only 266 apartments are currently ready for tenants to move in without renovations. “Apartments that have not been repaired, regardless of whether they are managed by the city districts, need to be improved as soon as possible. The Affordable Housing Fund has 500 million crowns in subsidies for reconstruction, and we can offer another 500 million to city districts as interest-free loans,” said Adam Zábranský. “It is good that we are...
