The Czech Hydro-meteorological Office says this winter has been one the warmest ever in this country. Temperatures in the months of December, January and February were above long term average. The daily air temperature from December 1, 2018 to February 28 was 3.6° C. This is 3.3° more than the average value of many years of observations. The oldest Czech meteorological station, Prague’s Klementinum, has been monitoring temperatures since 1775. In recent times, both summer and winter high temperatures have broken records. This year’s edition of the Prague IFF – Febiofest will bring a number of world famous names to the Czech capital, including the US film star Peter Fonda. The actor, perhaps best-known for his role in the cult film Easy Rider, which he wrote and starred in alongside Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, will attend the festival’s gala opening on 21 March. The Golden Globe winner will receive Febiofest’s Kristián award for lifetime contribution to world cinema during the ceremony. Peter Fonda’s programme to include Easy Rider screening and master class Peter Fonda will come to Prague for the very beginning of the festival. During his stay he will present Easy Rider, the film that kick-started the New Hollywood era in the laidback 1960s and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. SCAT Airlines has confirmed that the carrier will launch a new regular scheduled connection between Prague and Astana. Effective 2 June 2019, the airline will service the capital city of Kazakhstan twice a week, every Thursday and Sunday, using Boeing 737. Based on Prague Airport’s estimates, the new route will be used by approximately 24 thousand passengers a year in both directions. “The launch of regular scheduled flights on the Prague – Astana route is the result of over a year-long negotiation which involved, alongside Prague Airport, the representatives of Embassies of both countries involved and CzechTourism. For quite some time, we have recognised the growing potential of Kazakhstan as one of the most important markets within the post-Soviet state. The new route will primarily be used by Kazakh tourists. However, we have a reason to believe that it will also support the outbound tourism from the Czech Republic and help enhance business relations between the countries,” Vaclav Rehor, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, said. Within three years, an extravagant building will be built in Prague 8 just opposite Invalidovna. About one and a half billion crowns will be invested by Trigema developer. The investor has completed the land purchase and building will begin in the spring of next year. The new building will be located in front of Kaizlovy sady. “On the ground floor, residents have a generous central area and five side reception entrances. They will be fully automated and equipped with a robotic receptionist. The building will offer some 144 premium apartments, ranging in size from 1 + kk to penthouse. The mayor of Prague has welcomed the prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile and presented him with the symbolic key to the Czech capital. Zdenek Hrib told Lobsang Sangay at a ceremony at Prague’s Old City Hall Wednesday he wants show solidarity with the Tibetan people, saying they were “were deprived of freedom in the most brutal way” 60 years ago. Prague officials also decided this week to fly again the Tibetan flag on the Tibetan national uprising day. China says Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries. Seeking to examine a nation’s worth beyond hard metrics alone, US News & World Report’s fourth annual ‘2019 Best Countries’ rankings surveyed more than 20,000 global citizens to gauge their perceptions of 80 nations. The study, developed by BAV Group and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, asked participants to score each country out of 10 based on 65 attributes that contribute to its success on the global stage. A Czech man who kept two lions as pets died from wounds inflicted by one of the felines, according to local police. Michal Prášek, who lived in the eastern village of Zděchov, was attacked and killed by a nine-year-old male lion. The 34-year-old kept two lions, a male and a female, without any authorisation from the local veterinary services in a cage built without a building permit. “I can confirm the death of the breeder,” said police spokeswoman Lenka Javorková, adding that the two lions had been killed. Police were alerted to the incident by Prasek’s father who saw his son’s body lying inside the enclosure through a security camera. A doctor who rushed to the scene of the accident was the first to “pronounce the man as dead,” according to police, who added that the two animals never left the enclosure following the incident. Prášek had been raising the male lion since 2016 and acquired the lioness last year. Many of Zděchov’s residents were concerned by the presence of the animals. Petr Stuchlík (ANO) spoke about the need to build a new concert hall during the pre-election campaign. The proposal was also submitted to Spojené síly pro Prahu coalition headed by Jiří Pospíšil. “For the Prague Concert Hall, we will prepare an architectural competition. We want a really high-quality building; that’s why I estimate for it to take about ten years,” Hana Třeštíková (Praha sobě) told Echo24. “The new concert hall can kick-start the revitalization of Bubny-Zátory area. For example, it is possible to carry traffic on the surface and below it, how to access the river and how to behave against the existing infrastructure and development,” said Ondřej Boháč, Director at Prague Institute of Planning and Development. The need for a new hall was also agreed by former Mayor Adriana Krnáčová. The artists collective RAFANI is engaging Galerie NoD in a unique art project. For the occasion, the grounds of Galerie NoD will be transformed to a fully fledged private flat furnished with the group’s artefacts, available for rent by members of the general public, either local or visitors to Prague, for two or more nights, through mediation by Airbnb. The project, entitled RAFANI Art Apartment in the Heart of the City, is aimed at contributing in a novel way to the current public debate about the impact of short-term rentals on the character of residential urban neighbourhoods and on the availability of housing to long-time city dwellers. The flat’s occupants will receive an unorthodox guide of today’s Prague. The exhibition will incorporate a broad platform for discussion focused on the overall potential, social consequences and limitations of the sharing economy at large. The Prague Carnival kicked off here on Saturday with a parade featuring traditional costumes and masks. The carnival will last several days during which a series of events will be held. “Masopust”, (also known as “fašank”), the time of carnivals which historically ended on Ash Wednesday, is the oldest continuous holiday feast in the Czech lands. It’s Žižkov that holds the honour of hosting the longest-standing Masopust celebration in the city with its parade and festivities in Jiřího z Poděbrad Square taking place for over 25 years. During the carnival period, the square is filled with live music, great food and lots of drinks. Parade spectators can expect to see larger than life puppets, colourful floats and whimsical costumes winding through the streets, finishing off with an impressive firework display in Park U Viktorky Zizkov.
