Yesterday Cardinal Dominik Duka welcomed people who are homeless, impoverished, isolated and refugees to the Archbishop’s Palace for a traditional Christmas lunch. Shared seating for 300 guests at the Christmas Day lunch was organized for the 20th year in a row by the lay Catholic movement Community of Sant’Egidio; the community organized Christmas lunches in 70 countries worldwide yesterday for a total of 260 000 impoverished and isolated people. The menu included beef stock with liver dumplings, roast duck and beef in cream sauce, and Christmas cookies. Each guest received a Christmas present such as a coat, socks, or a warm scarf and everyone received personal hygiene supplies. He clinked a glass of champagne with the guests and shook hands with all of them. “I wish you quiet and peace in soul, inner calm and reconciliation. If there is need, look for help in order to feel parts of society that should think more of you and help you,” Duka said. Author: red
Orlík takes its name from ‘orel’, the Czech word for an eagle; and indeed for many centuries this rocky outcrop rising 200 feet above the river Vltava must have made a dramatic eyrie for the original fortified manor. Its appearance today — a neo-gothic fantasy floating only just above water-level — is the result, prosaically, of the construction of Czechoslovakia’s largest hydroelectric dam in the 1950s. Orlík Chateau is located on the border of South and Central Bohemia. The castle was expanded in the 16th century after a fire that destroyed Orlík. Under the stewardship of the famous field-marshall Karl Philipp Schwarzenberg (1771-1820) and his descendants, the house and park began to take on their current romantic appearance. A fourth floor was added, and the grounds were extensively planted with trees in the English fashion. Finally, between 1850 and 1861, the entire house was remodelled in neo-gothic style under the Prague academician Bernhard Grueber. When visiting the castle, you can expect to see the following: Artwork depicting historical events and personalities. Schwarzenberg family trees spanning centuries. Medals and orders relating to military victories. Empire style furnishings from revolutionary Paris. The unique Teskas Hall with ornately hand-crafted wooden ceiling. The knights hall and armory with weapons dating from the...
When walking the streets of Prague city center I feel like I’m juggling two different worlds. One world is very busy, with shiny and colorful windows and full of people. But just one step can throw you into a quiet street with just a few random searching for the first world or locals running somewhere they need to be. Like Zlatá ulice. I want to invite you to walk one street you might not even see from each of these worlds. I am not worried it will turn into the rough touristic street because there is simply nothing tempting for business and it has one specialty – it closes at dusk and opens at dawn. Let’s check Zlatá ulice, or in English, Golden street. (Do not mistake for Golden Lane, the rather picturesque street in the Prague Castle.) Zlata ulice weaves its way through three blocks in the Old Town and it is opened from 8 am to 9 pm in winter. Maybe due to the opening hours, it is very clean and graffiti-free. In case you miss the graffiti for some reason, go to Stříbrná street. Graffiti covers every bit of the walls there. Zlatá street was once a meeting point for goldsmiths and...

Thirteen miners died and another 10 suffered injuries after a methane explosion at the ČSM hard coal mine in the north-east of the Czech Republic on Thursday. Eleven of the dead were Polish nationals. The Czech public television said three of the injured were still hospitalized in the city of Ostrava, with one of them in critical condition. The explosion occurred about 800 meters underground. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Czech counterpart Andrej Babis have offered their condolences to the families of the victims. The two leaders were expected to arrive at the mine on Friday. OKD managing director Boleslav Kowalczyk confirmed that the search of the scene had to be called off. “Unfortunately, we have reached a point where it was impossible to move forward, because there was a fire raging and zero visibility,” he said. Mr. Babis tweeted: “The blast at the CSM mine is a huge tragedy.” Author: red

Stores larger than 200 square meters will close at noon on December 24 and remain closed for two days after that. The law which came into effect last year, aims to make the Christmas period less about commerce and more about the holiday spirit, allowing people to slow down and spend time with their families. Not all stores are affected by the bill, of course. Pharmacies, gas stations, airport shops do not come under the legislation. Hamley’s toy store on Na Příkopě will be closed all day December 24. Furniture stores IKEA and Kika will also be closed that day. Electronics e-shop Alza.cz will open its main Prague shop in Holešovice December 26 for pickups and returns of items. The store maintains that since the sales take place online that opening the store for pickups does not violate the law. The law also includes New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, Liberation Day, the day of Czech Statehood Day on Sept. 28 and Independent Czechoslovak State Day on October 28. As for those, who open their doors in violation of the law? Fines can go up to one million crowns, while repeat offenders risk paying five times that amount. Author: red
Czech Airlines (ČSA) will terminate flights on their regular routes between Prague and Ostrava, Prague and Bratislava, and Bratislava and Košice, its spokesperson Daniel Šabík confirmed. “The main reason for the end of the operation on regular lines is the lack of capacity of the corresponding type of aircraft,” said Šabík, adding that it makes no economic sense to operate larger aircraft. However, the flights between Prague and Košice remain unchanged, Šabík said. The last flights on the soon-to-be canceled routes are scheduled for January 11, 2019. Passengers who bought tickets may request ticket reimbursement through the ČSA’s website. Author: red
A baby hippo was born last Wednesday in the Dvur Kralove zoo, the first one born in the zoo since 1989. Another one is expected in the coming weeks, said zoo spokeswoman Andrea Jirousova on Tuesday. The mother hippo is a seven-year-old Hula who came to the zoo in spring 2016 from Belgium together with another female hippo Mona. After their arrival, the zoo resumes hippo breeding after 14 years. The father hippo is Mike who came to the Dvur Kralove zoo in autumn 2017 from the Stuttgart zoo. Mike replaced two-year-old Karl Wilhelm, who also came from Germany and died in the zoo in August 2017. Zoo director Premysl Rabas said the birth of the baby hippo after almost 30 years is one of the most beautiful gifts the Dvur Kralove safari park has received for the Christmas this year. The baby hippo weights between 25 and 30 kilograms, its gender is not yet known. According to zoologist Jiri Hruby, hippos are usually born in the water where they also spend most of their time. However, the delivery in the Dvur Kralove zoo was carried out on dry land and at night when females tend to be out of...
The Czech cyber watchdog warned network operators on Monday against using software or hardware made by Chinese telecom equipment suppliers Huawei and ZTE, saying they pose a security threat. “We are making this announcement based on our investigation and an information provided by our partners in the security area, as well as the results received by our allies,” said Dusan Navratil, director of the Czech National Cyber and Information Security Agency (NUKIB) Huawei is the world’s biggest producer of telecoms equipment but faces intense scrutiny in the West over ties to the Chinese government and concerns its equipment could be used by Beijing for spying. The company has repeatedly denied the allegations. “China’s laws, among other things, require private companies residing in China to cooperate with intelligence services, therefore introducing them into the key state systems might present a threat,” Navrátil added. Huawei is the largest telecom infrastructure supplier in the Czech Republic for local mobile operators. The company’s revenue in the country amounted to 6.55 billion Czech crowns (about $300 million) in 2017. Until 2022, Huawei plans to invest about $360 million in the Czech Republic and create a total of more than 4,000 new jobs. The United States and several other countries have also raised security questions with regard to the Chinese telecommunications giant. Author:...
