On Friday, September 28 at 5.45 pm will start the Ceremonial Unveiling of the Astronomical Clock and at 6 pm the clock will start running again. At 8.00, 9.00 and 10.00 p.m. – a spectacular projection on the Old Town Tower will be offered to the participants. On the same day, a free exhibition will feature photographs and historical artifacts from the recent repair of the Old Town Hall. The restoration cost about Kč 7.4 million. The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia in 2018 was one of the reasons behind the decision to repair all four facades of the tower, the astronomical clock and the chapel, including new lighting. The Czech economic growth had decelerated in the second quarter on a sequential basis. Both domestic and foreign demand continues to still drive the economic growth. The most significant contributors continued to be household consumption, which added 1.6 percentage points because of the solid labor market and fixed investment expenditures, impacted by economic recovery in the Eurozone and a lack of new available employees in the Czech economy, which is compelling companies to invest more into robotization and increased automation of plants. Meanwhile, the contribution of net exports was a bit negative in the second quarter, as high demand for Czech exports was outweighed by imports for consumption and investment purposes. GDP is expected to come in at 3.5 percent in 2018, according to an Erste Group Research in a report. “In 2019 and 2020, we expect GDP growth to arrive at 3.0% and 2.9%, respectively. Although the economic development of solid domestic as well as foreign demand should continue, GDP growth will gradually slow down” stated Erste Group Research. The Czech Republic held on Tuesday its largest ever anti-terrorist exercise in the Congress Centre, with the participation of police rapid reaction unit, firefighters and rescuers. The operation, entitled DEMON 2018, simulated 40 armed people taking around 2,000 audience members at a musical show hostage and killing five of them. The gunmen demanded their fellows be released from prison, otherwise they refuse to negotiate with the police. Czech rapid reaction unit launched a raid with the aim to set the hostages free around 10:00 in the morning, and helicopters circled around the building. The Congress Centre and its nearby surroundings were closed roughly until 13:00. The preparation of the training lasted for half a year. Beer drinkers could be forced to swallow even higher prices next year as the brewing industry is rocked by the soaring costs of ingredients, according to Plzen Prazdroj spokeswoman Jitka Nemečková. The Bernard family beer company and the Primator brewery in Náchod have also announced price hikes in the coming weeks and the famous Budvar brewery has indicated a likely price increase as of next year. The price of hops and other ingredients have risen sharply after the summer heatwave scorched harvests across Europe, but other costs, such as energy, are also rising. The report from analysts at the investment bank Berenberg predicts the world’s biggest brewers, such as Heinken and Carlsberg, are facing a rise in production costs of around 16% going into 2019. Last year, retail sales for beer in the Czech Republic reached Kč 16.4 billion from June 2016 to May 2017. Year-on-year, it was a one-percent increase, daily Hospodářské noviny (HN) reported. The event commemorates one of the turning points in the history of the Czech lands. Hundreds of soldiers, archers, cannoneers and horse riders from all over Europe will all meet in Prague to take place in the largest re-enactment of a battle from the Thirty Years’ War. It should resemble the original battle and it is one of the largest events of this kind in Europe. Although the Battle of White Mountain, which took place on November 8th, 1620, lasted only two hours, it had far-reaching consequences for the Czech lands. It was the beginning of the Thirty Years War and influenced the fate of Central Europe for the next 300 years. At the venue, you will find out a market with traditional handicrafts. An accompanying programme will start at 12.00 p.m. featuring fencing, training of units, juggling, music performances and more. After Luxembourg, Hungary and the Czech Republic are the EU member countries that invest the most public resources on transport in the European Union. According to Eurostat data released today, the highest percentage of government expenditure on transport in 2016 was registered in Luxembourg (3.7 % of the GDP), followed by Hungary and the Czech Republic (both 3.5 %), very much above the EU average of 1.9% of GDP. High percentages of public expenditure in transport was recorded also in Slovakia (3.4% of GDP), Romania (3.1), Austria (2.9), Poland (2.8), Greece (2.7), Estonia (2.6) and Croatia and Latvia (both 2.4). Government expenditure on transport includes expenditure on administration, regulation, construction and maintenance of the transport infrastructure, plus the operation of public transport corporations classified with the general government sector and subsidies and investments in the market producers to operate public transport, Eurostat illustrated. The Birell Prague Grand Prix is a charming evening race with a mysterious atmosphere in the historical Prague city center. During the first weekend of September Prague, streets are full of thousands of runners and spectators alongside the race course. The first race is a ladies only affair. The Adidas Women’s Race 5 km starts on Republic Square and continues over the bridge to the other side of the river. When the sun sets, the next race starts. The Birell 10 km Race is open to all runners, both men, and women. The Birell Prague Grand Prix will be broadcast live on ČT Sport as well as online on RunCzech.com. The course is renowned for its speed: last year five men managed to complete the race in incredible times all under 28 minutes. The Roads and Motorways Directorate and the Railway Infrastructure Administration have received orders from the minister of transport, ANO appointee Dan Ťok, to inspect bridges built from the 1960s to the 1980s in the Czech Republic. Concerns have been sparked by the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in the Italian city of Genoa, which was constructed in the mid-1960s. Of the 1,000 or so Czech bridges due for inspection around 600 are road bridges and the remainder carry trains. The minister has also called on the country’s regional authorities, which are responsible for second and third-class roads, to send out inspectors. Six of country’s first class road bridges have already been found to be in a calamitous state. They have been closed and await repair or demolition.
