The capital is having problems with many of its larger bridges. There are dozens of bridges in a bad or very bad condition in the city. These results come from a report made in March by the Technical Communications Administration (TSK). The bridge on Bubenská Street, adjacent to Hlávka bridge, is in a state of emergency and has been closed off since midnight on Tuesday. Prague has had problems with its bridges for a long time. In December last year, the Troja footbridge collapsed, and this January, the Libeňský bridge was closed off to vehicles and public transportation. In the report, TSK divides bridges and footbridges into seven categories. The worst categories are the fifth category which means the bridge is in a bad condition, the sixth category which means the bridge is in a very bad condition, and the seventh category which means the bridge is in a state of emergency. According to the document, about seven dozen bridges are in the fifth category, and two dozen bridges are in the sixth. The Czech Republic will have a lot to celebrate this Sunday! Not only is it the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia, but also the 150th anniversary of the National Theatre here in Prague. Participants of this year’s Roma Pride will be marching in opposition to the antiziganist statements of Milos Zeman. Organizers announced that the march is planned to take place on the national holiday on the 28th of October. At the end of September, in the region of Olomouc, Zeman had implied that the unemployed in one of the villages he visited were all Roma. Subsequently, the president’s words were criticized in an open letter by the European Roma Rights Center (ERRC) and by some politicians. How would you like a three-day working week? Scientists have confirmed that too much work can deteriorate brain performance – it diminishes memory, rational thinking, and overall mental health. Will the weekend be extended by at least one day in the foreseeable future? Scientists have been examining the cognitive ability of several thousand people over the age of 40. The results were then matched to the number of hours these people worked per week. It turns out that there is a close relationship between work and intelligence. If people worked less than 25 hours a week, their mental capacity increased, and when they worked more than 25 hours, the exact opposite occurred. After an unusually long summer, the autumn weather has finally arrived. According to the monthly forecast of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), this week in Prague, temperatures will be around 11 degree Celsius and it will even rain! “After high temperatures and a long dry season, there will be a significant change in circulating conditions in Europe during the first week of predictions,” meteorologists say. In the Czech Republic, the change is reflected in the swift transition from the above-average temperatures to temperatures that are a lot more typical of the turn of October and November. “Temperatures will continue to decline in the second half of the forecast period, but we expect them to remain within the range of average values for this time of the year” the CHMI said. Particularly this week, meteorologists have predicted more rain than usual. In the following three weeks, the amount of precipitation will be closer to the average. The long-term average temperature for the period between October 22nd and November 18th is 5.2 degrees Celsius. Celebrations of the centenary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia are due to culminate next weekend Video mapping titled “The Witness to History” will be projected onto the National Museum, which is being ceremonially reopened on Saturday after major renovations, and the National Theatre. The video mapping show will start at 8.00 p.m. From October 28th till December 31st the museum will be open to visitors for free and there will be a Czech-Slovak exhibition focussing on our common history. The historical building underwent a major reconstruction and will re-open on 28 October 2018 — the day of the 100th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Republic. The renovations cost amounted to 2.3 billion crowns. French President Emmanuel Macron will come to the Czech Republic on October 27th following his visit to Slovakia. The French head of state will meet with Czech President Miloš Zeman and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. The day before, Macron will be in Bratislava meeting with their Slovakian counterparts Andrej Kiska and Peter Pellegrini. Macron will arrive in Prague on the same weekend as the conclusion of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia. On Saturday, October 27th, the historic National museum will officially be reopened and the Slovak-Czech exhibition will be launched. Babiš has invited a number of statesmen, but a list of confirmed names has not yet been published by the Czech government. The Czech Army have previously stated that on Sunday, October 28th, there will be a gala parade attended by US Secretary of Defence James Mattis at Vítkov Kiska. The AFP notes that the Czech Republic and Slovakia together with Poland and Hungary are creating the so-called “Visegrad Four” (V4), which is against the EU’s stance on receiving refugees. Childrens’ birthday parties have been held in McDonald’s for years and have become quite iconic and typical of the fast-food chain. However, McDonald’s Eden restaurant in Prague hosted a rather unusual birthday party this week. The birthday they were celebrating was that of the oldest employee of their restaurant and of all the restaurants in the country, 90-year-old Jindřich Kochrda. For Kochrda, this year’s celebrations were doubled. Besides the very special birthday, he was also celebrating ten years working under the golden arches. Like many others, he is employed part-time at the Eden restaurant. Jindřich has worked his entire life. “I’ve always worked, and I’m used to it. It’s different today though, even here at McDonald’s. I’m a bit concerned about the employee turnover. There are very few elderly workers like me, and it’s a shame.” Commented Jindřich Kochrda, who was born in 1928. After a lifetime of work, Kochrda wants to devote more time to his wife, home and garden, and will, therefore, go into full retirement on December 31st of this year. On Sunday, October 28, the Open House Praha will be held at Klementinum. Free tours will start every 15 minutes from 09:00 to 16:30. The tour takes about 50 minutes and is always guided, with a maximum of 22 people per tour. Visitors will see the richly decorated Křižovnická corridor, the main reading room, the famous Mirror chapel – with its richly designed interior and unique installation of mirrors where classical music concerts take place regularly – and other historical rooms. The organizers are paying special attention to the Mathematical Hall, which has been under reconstruction for a long time. The extensive grounds of the Clementinum, one of the largest building complexes in Europe, were built from the mid-16th century to the mid-18th century, originally as a Jesuit dormitory. In its Astronomical Tower, meteorological measurements have been collected since 1775. Klementinum is situated next to the Charles Bridge, right in the historical center of Prague. Activist Aneta Petani disrupted the Mass on Tuesday, which Cardinal Dominik Duka was serving in St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle. Petani was only wearing a bra, black trousers, and a crown of thorns on her head. She was protesting against recent statements by Catholic priest Petr Pit’ha about homosexuals and women. The Duke stood up for Pit’ha, which Petani also criticised. Petani knelt in front of the altar during the Mass. On her body was written “Why did you put a crown of thorns on them?” and the statement “Love of Truth”. A security guard escorted her out of the back entrance of the cathedral. The Mass was being held for the 40th anniversary of the election of John Paul II as Pope. Petani said that she was peaceful throughout the protest. She was completely silent during the mass and did not cry out. “I was simply waiting for a reaction. My protest was always supposed to be peaceful and silent, even though the representatives of the Catholic Church would consider it controversial.
