Almost 70 men, women, and children have taken part in an extraordinary “wild swim” down the River Elbe in Kolin, 80 km from Prague, in an initiative sparked by a UK Channel swimmer, and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. The Hana Greenfield Memorial Swim was held to commemorate the life and times of one of the few survivors of the Nazi deportation of the 500 Jews of Kolin. Greenfield swam regularly in the Elbe in the 1930s before being deported to Terezin and then to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. After liberation, she moved to Britain then Israel, becoming a noted author, journalist, and educator. She helped to keep the memory of Kolin’s Jews alive, instituting an annual prize for school students to write about the town’s Jewish heritage. It took place on Sunday, August 26. The date coincided with the birthdate of legendary Kolin rabbi Dr Richard Feder, who conducted Christian as well as Jewish funerals in Terezin, where he was interned for most of the war. United continues to step up its international game, today announcing nonstop seasonal service to two new destinations: Naples (Italy) and Prague, with both flights departing from New York-Newark. Once-daily flights to Prague begin June 6 and run through October 4, and will be on Boeing 767-300 planes. “We’ve built an unparalleled global network and we continuously look for opportunities to make United the first choice for travelers booking flights to Europe and beyond,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network. “Whether customers are traveling for business or leisure, United offers more choice than ever before to connect to the places, people and moments that matter most.” United Airlines and United Express operate approximately 4,600 flights a day to 357 airports across five continents. Many money transfers from one bank to another often aren’t accomplished on the same day, and Czech banking law allows them to happen on the following business day. But banks have been starting to change that. Some Czech banks have been voluntarily starting to speed up the process to allow transfers posted in the morning to be completed in the afternoon, without the client having to pay a priority or premium fee. Prague is definitely shutting down the scandal-plagued Opencard. Passengers using the red card will lose the opportunity to record coupons for public transport from November. The alternative transit card Lítačka card was launched in March 2016, and both systems have been running side by side. Lítačka will expand with a new website and a new app as Opencard shuts down. People who have bought a transit coupon on Opencard can continue to use it until the coupon expires. As of Sept. 1, anybody using an Opencard can transfer to Lítačka free of charge. Some 240,000 Opencards are still in use, according to City Hall. Lítačka is used by about a half million people. Prague has a population of 1.26 million, counting children who ride for free. Who does not love Prosecco? The sparkling, dry wine has gained a lot of fans recently. Many of them in Prague and they’re throwing a Proseccofest, where you can try all different variations of it. Prosecco is made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties may be included. The following varieties are traditionally used with Glera up to a maximum of 15% of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The name is derived from that of the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated. In the second week of September European Heritage Days (EHD) will be held in the Czech Republic. Their goal is to make the most interesting monuments of all kinds available to the general public, i.e. architectural, archaeological, sacral, technical, as well as museums, galleries and libraries and even other areas in which incredibly extensive collections of movable cultural heritage are kept. In the context of the European Heritage Days various accompanying events – lectures, concerts, town festivals, as well as competitions and other cultural programs are held. In buildings that are usually accessible to the public and where admission is charged, special programs shall be offered during these days (such as special guided tours, concerts, exhibitions, etc.). Dozens of cities and municipalities are preparing composed programs for its citizens and tourists. Castles, palaces, churches, museums, and theaters are not the only places to visit. It took an international “constellation of coincidences,” in Steve Hiniker’s words, to bring his lost wallet home to Wisconsin, USA. The man lost his wallet in the Czech Republic while traveling by bicycle from Athens to Oslo. It was May 25 and Steve was buying some power bars and other supplies from a grocery market in Litomerice, 70km from Prague. He paid and then absent-mindedly left the wallet on the counter. He and his wife, Mary Ellen Vollbrecht, who are enjoying lots of biking together in retirement, rode 120 km before Steve discovered the loss. “I called the police department and they didn’t understand what I was saying and they didn’t speak English. I called the visitor’s bureau and they didn’t speak English. I went back to Google and found that the store wouldn’t be open again until Monday,” which was a couple days away, Steve said. Prague City Hall has approved a 50% discount on trams, buses and the metro for students under 26 years and retirees over 65 years. Annual passes for those groups will be cut to 1,280 crowns a year if paid in a lump sum, about half the current amount. To obtain the benefits, passengers will have to show their identity card (for retirees) or a student card at the cashier’s desk. Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) supported the rate cut for students and was one of the key promoters of the cut for adults in 2015. Opposition TOP 09 representatives, however, called the proposal a populist move. The city is having elections in October. The Pirates also opposed it, saying the planned Kč 350 million cost of the discount could be better spent on teachers’ salaries or infrastructure. On the last night in August, most Czech castles and châteaux turn into magical places full of stories and experiences. On August 20, 1968, the Soviet Union led Warsaw Pact troops in an invasion of Czechoslovakia to crack down on reformist trends in Prague. The newly elected first secretary Alexander Dubcek appealed to the public to voice support for his proposed reforms: democratic elections, greater autonomy for Slovakia, freedom of speech and religion, the abolition of censorship, an end to restrictions on travel, and major industrial and agricultural reforms. Dubcek declared that he was offering “socialism with a human face.” The Soviet Union and its satellites Poland and East Germany were alarmed by what appeared to be the imminent collapse of communism in Czechoslovakia. Police say the possession of firearms has risen in the Czech Republic last year. In 2017, the number of firearms permits increased to 303,000. That is 2,700 more than in 2016 and an increase of 11,000 compared with 2015. Fears over terror attacks, immigration, and personal assaults have caused the surge, Czech police say. The total number of guns, rifles and other firearms kept at home by Czechs has risen to around 850,000. That is an increase of 13.3%, or 100,000 compared to five years ago. Author: red
