Many expats can participate in the municipal elections, scheduled for Oct. 5–6. The local elections are not only in Prague but across the country and the same rules apply. European Union citizens with residence permits can vote, and they can also run for some local offices including City Council, but not the mayor. In practice, though, running for office is a bit complicated as a signed petition is needed to get on the ballot. A 41-year-old tourist from the Czech Republic was killed by a shark on Friday 3 August, reports local Czech media. The Czech man who was swimming off the coast of Marsa Alam was attacked and killed by a shark. The man was reportedly holidaying in the popular Red Sea resort town with his wife and children through a travel agency identified as Exim Tours. A spokesperson for Exim Tours said that the attack was unusual and that the deceased’s family hopes to return to the Czech Republic as soon as possible. Reports of the attack first emerged on Friday evening, when a part of an unidentified body was located off the coast of a resort in Marsa Alam. It remains unclear where the man was staying and whether he was swimming alone. According to the Czech Republic’s Foreign Ministry, local Egyptian police are investigating the attack. This year’s Prague Pride will put the focus on the LGBTI family. The organizers aim to raise awareness of LGBTI family members to challenge the tendency to label them as just gay or lesbian. “In the campaign, we want to mainly focus on how often homosexual children are considered black sheep of the family,” festival director Hana Kulhánková said. “We would like gays, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people to be perceived as comprehensive personalities who are something more than the gay or lesbian labels,” she added. The Pride festival will take place from 6-12 August, with over 100 LGBTI-themed events including film screenings, theatre performances, seminars, and debates. As always, there will be a march through the city center on 11 August. Awareness of LGBTI rights in the Czech Republic has grown over the last few years, but campaigners are still working to push through progressive legislation. Last Wednesday morning, the City Police of Prague posted a Facebook photo of a woman in lingerie next to a police car. The policeman captioned it with “Hi guys, do you have a recruitment department in Prague 7? For those looking for another meaning in this photo, we got the photo directly from the Prague 7 police officers for the hot summer days and it’s not about hunting”. The post stirred mixed reactions among people as some people talked about sexism while others took it as humor. Due to criticisms, the police officers apologized for the photo posted on the social media. Irena Seifertová, the spokeswoman for the Prague police, stated that the police officers sometimes try to relieve their official Facebook profile from serious issues. “This is not a recruiting photo…we want to show that police officer are also just humans.” According to Seifertová, the post was not meant to be sexist as it was only in response to the blazing hot weather. On Sunday, August 12th of this year, the Prague City Transport Company will celebrate the 40th-anniversary commencement of the Metro A line. The first ride will take place at 11:45 from Dejvická station to Lenin Station and then towards Namesti Miru station. This route will commemorate the first section of Line A, which has been in operation since August 12, 1978. The last exit of the set is planned at 15.10 from Dejvická station in the direction of Náměstí Míru. Following the tradition, all train runs will be accompanied by station radio reports and train drivers will wear uniforms accordingly to each period era. Soviet subways 81-71 demonstrate the most typical representative of the Prague metro operation. The technical specifications and the requirements that complied with the kit allowed their operation on all three routes of the Prague metro (unlike the predecessor – the Ecs set which was only run on route C). Lucie Lukášková (21) managed to get married just three hours after a complicated delivery. She delivered the baby with the help of epidural, a thin tube that brings a pain-relieving cloth to the spine. With a high risk of premature birth, she had to be transported from Neratovice to the Prague hospital at St. Apollinaire. Filip Lukášek (28) and Lucie wanted to get married before the baby was born, mainly due to matrix and paperworks. Their wedding was scheduled for Saturday, May 26, at 13:00 at the chapel of the Holy Cross. “But just in the morning, exactly on the wedding day, premature birth took place only at the 29th week of pregnancy, about three months before the date of delivery, ” Professor Antonin Pařízek, who was on duty that day, explained. The 8th edition of the Prague Pride festival will take place from Monday 6 until Sunday 12 August 2018. Prague Pride is the largest pride in the Middle and Eastern Europe. The programme comprises of approx. 100 social, sport, cultural and other events and its peak is the Prague Pride Parade, also called as “rainbow parade“ with allegorical vehicles, extravagant costumes and other fancy dressed people. On Friday before noon, you can take part in the Prague LGBT tour. The roads have been using sprinkling trucks for about 22 days now since the start of May 28. Last year, the city used the sprinkling truck for a total of 16 days to cool people down for the summer. Cisterns run into the streets whenever the temperature rises for more than 25 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. Weather channels have stated that the temperature for this week will reach 37 degrees Celcius. One sprinkling truck can be used for an average of 17 kilometers of Prague streets. They took a total of 12,700 kilometers in 22 days. A day of sprinkling and mist costs about 869,000 CZK. Sprinkling and fogging is part of annual summer road maintenance. “The reason is not only climate rejuvenation, but above all the reduction of dustiness and intensity of ground-level ozone,” TSK spokesman Barbora Lišková said. The Financial Administration is actively seeking data and searching for analytical activities from Internet platforms such as Airbnb, Booking, and Uber. “If we have indications that some income has not been properly taxed, we will ask the entities to file a tax return. However, additional taxation is already linked to a sanction in line with the Tax Code,” GFŘ spokesman Petr Habáň told Novinka. Revenue from the accommodation acquired via Airbnb, Booking, Uber, and other Internet platforms is subject FS income tax and must be included in the tax return. In the event that the rental over Airbnb or Booking exceeds one million crowns in the last 12 months, the owner must register as a VAT payer within 15 days of the last month’s expiration. Czech president Miloš Zeman and his counterpart Andrej Kiska took a symbolic ride on a vintage train from the Czech town of Hodonín to the Slovak town of Topoľčianky (Nitra Region) on July 29. Both towns have a symbolic meaning, as Hodonín was the birthplace of first Czechoslovak President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, and Czechoslovak presidents used to have a summer residence in Topoľčianky. In Topoľčianky, they dropped in at a first-republic-style fair and visited the National Stud Farm and Topoľčianky Castle. Kiska and Zeman laid flowers at Masaryk’s statue there and signed commemorative papers to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic.
