Summer cinema sessions will start on June 19 right on the rooftop of Prague Exhibition Palace (Veletržní palác). That is a really unusual and inspiring place to watch well-known Czech and foreign films on the original motion picture film of the 16 and 35 mm format and enjoy the view. The cinema will be opened until October; the movies are scheduled every Tuesday and Wednesday (beginning at 21:30). The cinema hall has been there since the Palace was opened. It was located in the basement of the building and called Kino Favorit, and then renamed to Kino Veletrhy. The cinema was, unfortunately, destroyed by fire in August 1974. Říčany currently ranks as the city with the best quality of life in the Czech Republic, according to Deloitte, which uses data from users to evaluate various aspects of life in Czech cities. The project is called “Obce v date”. Deloitte claims to analyze data from the 206 largest Czech cities and uses the following criteria to evaluate cities’ quality of life: Cost of living and purchasing power Affordability of housing Pollution including air, water, etc. Crime rates· Health system quality Traffic (commute times) Number of doctors employed Unemployment rate Average salary On the second place ranks Prague, the third – Černošice. On the contrary, towns from the Moravian-Silesian and Ústecký Regions occupied the lowest places. “Many people in these regions have to deal with financial problems. A secret message has been found inside one of the statues of the Astronomical Clock. The clock on the front of Old Town Square has been undergoing repairs since January. Aside from the clock itself, the sculpted figures are being restored. One of the statues of the Apostles weighed more than the others. Czech hygienists warn against the popular fish pedicure. Fish pedicures are popular in Prague, but hygienists warn against them, according to a press release by Dana Mertová. Mertová is a spokesperson for the Hygienická stanice hlavního města Prahy (HSHMP), Prague’s hygienic station. Particularly popular among tourists, the treatment is offered around Prague’s city center. The treatment consists of soaking one’s feet and calves in an aquarium filled with a freshwater fish called garra rufa. Also known as doctor fish, the fish nibble at the top layer of the skin, supposedly having a healing effect. The fish do not have teeth, and is a “fun and quite a pleasant process,” according to the press release. Despite the experiences potential beneficial and pleasant effects, the HSHMP warns against the treatment. “’The risk of transmitting infection from either fish to humans or humans to humans (via water and fish) or possibly the water itself can not be ruled out. The Rolling Stones are coming to Letiště Letňany in Prague on July 4 for what will be the largest concert of the summer and likely the largest the city has seen since the Stones played outdoors in 2003. Well over 50,000 people are expected to attend. The organizers announced the opening acts plus some very important rules that concertgoers will need to know ahead of time, in particular, strict size restrictions on bags and travel info. In Royal garden of Prague castle takes places this weekend the Beer Festival with more than 70 mini Czech mini-breweries. The fee is 475 CZK if you buy the ticket ahead of the time, 500 CZK when buying the ticket on the spot. Once being inside, you have unlimited consumption of the beer included the ticket. The rooftop Palac Lucerna in Prague will reopen to the public. Every Tuesday (starting from June 12) until the end of the summer there will be free yoga classes, starting at 7 am. The initiative belongs to Prague café owner and urban impresario Ondřej Kobza. Inspired by the rooftop culture of cities like New York, Kobza wants to organize salons, lectures, and happenings every week…Our dream is to start a roof culture in Prague…to start another floor of life.” Each lesson will be conducted by a new coach (in English and Czech). A new video called Prague Airport – Future Vision shows what the largest Czech international airport could look like in another two decades. It is based on extensive development plans, which include a number of technological and structural changes. The first phase of the development plan by Prague Airport (Letiště Praha), the operator of Václav Havel Airport Prague, is already in place. Due to the ever-growing number of checked-in passengers, the operator is continuously making modifications to increase airport capacity in its current form. “This year, we expect to handle over 17 million passengers. The airport must react to this by expanding its capacities. We have opened a new security control station at Terminal 2, where flights to the Schengen Zone are handled. It is equipped with eight modern automatic tracks and six manual tracks,” Václav Řehoř, chairman of the board of directors of the Prague Airport, said in a press release. The 76th-anniversary ceremony commemorating the victims of Lidice which was razed to the ground by the Nazi regime on June 10, 1942, was held on Sunday. Several government ministers attended the memorial ceremony. Representatives of political parties, embassies and various associations, as well as war veterans and international guests laid wreaths at the common grave of murdered people. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said in his speech that the shocking crime of the Nazis should be a warning for future generations. Lidice Memorial Director Martina Lehmannova emphasized that the name Lidice became a symbol for all who wanted to fight for freedom, democracy, equality of people and mutual respect. Sunday’s ceremony, according to her, was a gathering of people who respect human life regardless of nationality, skin colour or belief. The Nazis burned the village down in 1942 in retaliation for the assassination of Nazi Deputy Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich by Czechoslovak paratroopers. A young woman drowned and a man is missing after they were caught inside Prague’s drain system by torrential rains while geocaching. They were among a group of four participating in the GPS-based treasure hunt when they became trapped in rising water after a storm. “A woman was found dead in the Vltava and a man is still missing,” police spokesman Jan Rybansky said. The identity of the 27-year-old victim has not yet been confirmed by the coroner. The other two members of the group managed to escape and were hospitalized. The group were ‘geocaching’, a treasure hunt activity played by millions of people around the world. The aim of the game is to find a trinket or collectible that has been planted by another user which can then be found using a person’s smartphone GPS.
