Prague City Hall has launched a new website with ads for the rental and sale of real estate owned by the city. There are both residential and commercial properties. Gradually the site www.realitniportalpraha.cz will be replenished with new announcements. Users have already the opportunity to subscribe to an e-mail newsletter. “The real estate portal is a next step in the direction of making operations with urban real estate as transparent as possible. Protests by taxi drivers may not be over. The Association of Czech Taxi Drivers (SČT) is not pleased with the agreement signed between ride-sharing service Uber and the Czech government and is calling for taxi drivers to protest on Friday, May 4, in Čestlice, just south of Prague. The government, led by Andrej Babiš (ANO), signed the agreement with Uber on April 30. As previously determined, the agreement called for Uber to commit to getting a Czech business license to operate locally, rather than rely on a license from another EU country. Uber drivers will have to meet the conditions for a regular taxi driver, including a license and an exam. The signing of the agreement had been delayed over issues including deadlines. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon takes place May 6, starting at 9 am at Old Town Square. It will be the 24th edition of the race that has become the most important running event in the country. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon became the fastest May marathon of all time in 2010 thanks to Eliud Kiptanui’s race record of 2.05:39. The women’s race record of 2:21:57 has been held by Valary Aiyabei since last year. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon includes traditional side events, such as the Marathon Music Festival, Sports Expo Fair and the short family Minimarathon. It is exactly a tenth of the race, 4.2 km, and is intended for all who want to be part of the marathon but dare not go the whole marathon distance. Englishman Neil Smith is behind the rebirth of a distinctive and iconic Czech scooter from the 1950s and 1960s – the Čezeta. The new version is electric and the project has just benefitted from the biggest Czech crowdfunding ever. We interviewed Neil, the sole Director of Čezeta, who recently gave a presentation to around 30 private investors. Prague’s annual Million Marihuana March takes place Saturday, May 5, and starts at 12:30 pm at Karlovo náměstí. The march, which attracts thousands of people hand has several music trucks, will go through the city center and end up in Štvanice ostrov. There is a large program with live music, DJs and seminars on the island from 2:30 pm to 10 pm. The purpose behind the march is to encourage the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational uses, and the draw attention to the what organizers call the absurdity of the current laws and the problems with prohibition. If motorists have been seeing a lot of yellow dust on their cars and aren’t sure exactly what it is, they may want to pay attention what their intuition suggests. In short, this being the time in which flowers are blooming, pollen is saturating the air and landing on the first surface that’s come to. Since few days, Czechs are fighting against small yellow grains. According to allergologists it comes from spruce and pine trees. According to Ondřej Rybníček from the Faculty Hospital in Brno, this year the amount of pollen is higher than in previous years. “Hot weather and strong wind can cause a high concentration of pollen in the air. Everything blossomed suddenly,” he explained. Pine trees produce large amounts of pollen each spring in order to ensure that the seeds get fertilized and the species can survive. You may not know this, but pine trees have both male and female pine cones. The male cones are usually smaller and often not even noticed, but the pollen that they produce is. The Czech government said Monday it had reached a deal with ride-hailing service Uber that will see its drivers licensed like taxi drivers and data provided for tax purposes. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said that the San-Francisco based company had agreed to “share its data with the finance ministry” to improve tax collection. “Uber has been in the Czech Republic since 2014 and its operations have essentially been illegal up to now,” Babiš added. Czech taxi drivers have organized a string of protests over the last few months against what they argue is unfair competition from unlicensed Uber drivers. According to Uber, it works with some 2,000 Czech drivers and around 400,000 passengers have downloaded its app in the Czech Republic, an EU country of 10.5 million people. In the summer, up to 4.5 million foreign tourists could arrive in the Czech Republic, up by 8 percent year-on-year, CzechTourism estimates. For the whole year, it expects 11 million visitors from abroad to stay in the Czech Republic. Similarly, the number of domestic tourists has grown. Czechs’ interest in summer holidays in the Czech Republic has increased by a fifth this year. The greatest interest is in southern Bohemia and southern Moravia. “With a favorable economic situation, we are seeing a noticeable increase in the quality of accommodation services and at the same time accommodation capacities. This year we record 20 percent more interest in summer terms than last year,” said Hotel manager Milan Petr. Czech travelers attract more and more adventure tourism, they are interested in visiting castles and monuments, concerts in castles and the like. Tourists are sought after by traditional historical sites under the auspices of UNESCO – Český Krumlov and Lednice. The growing popularity of the Czech Republic as a safe destination was reflected in the development of inbound tourism. From May 3rd to September 29th, Wallenstein Garden hosts classical music concerts mostly on Thursday afternoon (5 pm) and occasionally on Saturday afternoon (2-3pm). You can listen for free to performing brass bands, choral groups, jazz bands and many others. The garden was created at the same time as the Wallenstein Palace in the early 17th century, in the lower part of the Malá Strana District. It displays a fine example of Mannerist layout and decoration, with very diverse sections. It is dominated by an aisle lined with bronze sculptures, an impressive Sala Terrena, and an amazing artificial grotto. According to Mayor of Prague Adriana Krnáčová, a working group was established to draft a new law on construction. Experts agree with officials that the existing system of land use, planning and issuing permits for housing construction needs to be reviewed. Krnáčová claims that a long process of obtaining permits is one of the main reasons why currently there are not enough vacant apartments in Prague. A small volume of supply leads to a sharp increase in house prices. Currently, the builder has to get dozens of positive assessments from various institutions and building authorities. Experts called for Prague to have only one building office or at least a common methodology for the existing ones. The current system has 22 building authorities involved in issuing permits. In September 2017, the government approved basic concepts of the law, which was being elaborated by the Ministry of Regional Development. Nearly four-fifths of Czechs read at least one book a year. Ten or more books can be read by 22 percent of people at the same time. This results from data for 2016, collected by the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) and published by Statistics & My magazine. The share of readers in younger age groups has been increasing in recent years. While in 2011 at least one book read by 68 percent of the Czech population, their share grew to 73 percent last year. In about a third of cases, people reached one to four books. In terms of age, the most active readers were among the students. “Only ten percent of students older than 18 years said they did not read any books in 2016,” explains Dedera, of the CZSO’s Department of Statistics, Health, Culture and Social Security. According to statistics, it is only possible to speculate how many of these books have been read in the framework of compulsory study reading.
