Medicinal cannabis from a Czech supplier could be available in pharmacies from the end of June. Its price should be 149 crowns per gram without VAT. The State Institute for Drug Control (SUKL) has announced that the Elkoplast Slušovice company won the tender for deliveries of medical cannabis for the Czech market. Currently, the only available medical marijuana in the Czech Republic is a single THC-high strain sourced from the Netherlands Presently pharmacies can only offer imported marihuana, which is several times more expensive. Around 880,000 patients with multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS are believed to use medicinal marihuana in the country. One patient may buy up to 180 grams a month. About two dozen doctors have the right to prescribe medical cannabis in the Czech Republic. On June 10, 1942, the German government announced that it had destroyed the small village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, killing every adult male and some fifty-two women. All surviving women and children were then deported to concentration camps, or if found suitable to be “Germanized”, sent to the greater Reich. The Nazi’s then proudly proclaimed that the village of Lidice, it’s residents, and its very name, were now forever blotted from memory. 184 men were executed. The village was then destroyed, literally wiped off the map. They even killed the village priest and every animal, pet or beast of burden. Today, events will take place throughout the morning and early afternoon, and the memorial and galleries will be open free of charge for the entire day. After the tragedy in 1942, other towns across the world adopted the name Lidice so it would not be forgotten. There is a Lidice in Panama and in Brazil. San Jerónimo Lídice is a part of Mexico City. There is a Lidice district in Crest Hill, Illinois. Stoke-on-Trent in Britain has long had a sister city relationship with Lidice. Students up to age 30 may be able to use Prague’s public transit for just Kč 1 a day, getting an annual pass for Kč 365. Deputy Mayor Petr Dolínek (ČSSD), responsible for transportation, has made the proposal, which still needs to be approved by the full City Council. It is expected to gain approval. He also wants to increase metro service on weekends and allow for installment payments on adult annual metro passes.Currently, people under the age of 18 and students under 26 can get a pass for Kč 260 per month. The Global Peace Index 2018 was recently published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, revealing the safest and most dangerous countries in the world. Every nation was issued a peace score out of 5 (the lower the score, the higher the level of peace), determined by analysis of 23 factors under three categories: the level of safety and security in society, domestic and international conflict, and militarization. The countries that displayed the most significant growth in heavy weapons capabilities over the last 30 years are primarily in unstable regions where there are high tensions with neighboring countries. These include Egypt, India, Iran, Pakistan, South Korea, and Syria, it said. The greatest increase in the number of deaths occurred in Syria, followed by Mexico, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen. The four most peaceful regions – Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and South America – all recorded deteriorations, with the largest overall deterioration occurring in South America, owing to falls in the safety and security domain, mainly due to increases in the incarceration rate and impact of terrorism. Wages are up in the Czech Republic compared to last year. In the first quarter of 2018, the average gross monthly nominal wage per full-time equivalent (FTE) employee was Kč 30.265, which was Kč 2,385 or 8.6 percent more than in the same period of 2017, according to the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). It was the fastest real year-on-year growth since the Q1 2003. The increase in wages was higher than inflation. Thousands of Czechs protested in Prague against Andrej Babiš on Tuesday, a day before his second appointment as prime minister and his second attempt at forming a government. Similar rallies were also held in no less than 200 Czech towns and villages. Babiš and his ANO party won a parliamentary election in October but his minority government lost a confidence vote in January and had to resign. President Miloš Zeman is due to appoint Babiš prime minister again on Wednesday after Babiš reached an agreement on a coalition with the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD). The agreement is now subject to a referendum among ČSSD members. It will thus have a key role, albeit informally, in forming the government for the first time since the 1989 Velvet Revolution led by Vaclav Havel that peacefully swept away communism in then Czechoslovakia. The protesters are condemning Babis’ plan and have called for his resignation. They also waved portraits of the estimated 4,500 victims of the former totalitarian regime before 1989. The 15th edition of the international music festival United Islands of Prague will take place June 22–23 in Prague’s Karlín district. There will be some 15 musical stages featuring over 100 performers. Entry to the festival is free. The United Islands festival moved to Karlín last year after having previously been at various locations along the waterfront and on islands in the Vltava. This edition will take place along Krizikova Street from Karlínské náměstí to Kaizlovy sady and Invalidovna, The center of Karlín will become a large pedestrian zone with stalls and musical stages. The Weekend of Open Gardens is an event where people get the chance to see gardens not normally open to visitors and also to find out more about their favorite parks. On this occasion, the public can learn a thing or two about the methods of horticultural experts and gain a new perspective on the function and significance of plants in our lives. During this weekend various parks and gardens organize an extensive programme including guided tours, activities for children, concerts, etc. “People have the opportunity to explore the normally inaccessible gardens, but also to discover their favorite parks in a new way,” according to Prague’s tourist portal. The gardens consist of both of privately and publicly owned properties, as well church gardens, and public spaces. The program also takes place in the gardens of Prague Castle. The Palace gardens under Prague Castle are situated on the southern slope of Hradcany hill and are a connection between Prague Castle and Lesser Town. The complex includes five gardens – Ledeburská zahrada, Malá Pálffyovská zahrada and Velká Pálffyovská zahrada, Kolowratská zahrada and MaláFürstenberská zahrada. Prague is planning 35 tram-related projects in the long term, including completely new lines, some of which may even extend beyond the city limits. The first new lines are still several years away from being operational. though. Some planned lined are entirely new routes, but others have been discussed for a long time.The new lines and other projects are part of the Sustainable Mobility Plan, which was published by City Hall this week. The city wants to place new tram lines mainly where buses are used but are still unable to meet demand. Trams hold more people. Pavel Nedvěd has come out of retirement to play alongside his son for Czech amateur side FC Skalna. Today, the retired Czech football legend will join the ranks of small hometown club Skalná 1.B in a match which could see up to 2,500 visitors. Nedved grew up in the Czech town and started his career at FC Skalna (he joined the local team at the age of five and went on to play at youth level for eight years), while his son, Pavel Jr, is already a registered player at the club. The match, against Královský Poříčí B, will kick-off at 2 pm. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš will be appointed government head again on June 6, he said on Thursday. The statement followed his meeting with President Zeman, Reuters reports. The ANO party won the most votes but feel short of a majority. It has so far failed to find majority support because most parties refuse to join a cabinet led by Babiš, who faces criminal charges of abusing EU subsidies a decade ago. ANO has struck a preliminary deal to form a new government coalition with the center-left Social Democrats, but that still requires approval by Social Democrat party members in a referendum running until June 14. Babiš said he and Zeman discussed various options and names, and he did not want to comment on this because it is still not clear. He said they will certainly wait for the outcome of the referendum of CSSD. Babiš said he presumed that after being appointed, he would be given a deadline to a form a new cabinet.
