The 3rd year of the Prague Candy Festival will take place at Pragovka, from 10 to 19, near to the underground station Kolbenova (line B). You can taste chocolate, cakes, cupcakes, macarons, pralines, muffins, raw desserts, cake pops, biscuits, hot chocolate, ice cream, sweet drinks, coffee and other delicacies. In addition to that, you can be looking forward to accompanying programme, plenty of attractions for both kids and adults, live baking and cake decorating. There will be a unique festival currency, called kendíky („candies“). One kendík = CZK20. You can buy more kendíks at the venue. The entrance fee is CZK350 at pre-sale; CZK400 at the venue. Roughly three-quarters of Czechs agree with the possibility to conclude marriage irrespective of sexual orientation and three-fifths are for the gay and lesbian couples adopting children from institutes, according to a poll conducted by the Median agency. The poll represents a shift from 2016 when support stood at 68 percent. Meanwhile, 61 percent believe same-sex couples should be able to adopt children, where just two years ago respondents had been evenly split. Same-sex couples are currently permitted to enter registered partnerships in the Czech Republic under a law passed in 2006, but gay couples are not afforded the full right of marriage. The country does not permit joint adoption by same-sex couples, although a 2016 court ruling struck down a ban on people in registered partnerships adopting as individuals. If marriage equality does pass in the Czech Republic, it would be the first post-Soviet country to embrace the measure. Author: red
The fourth edition of Open House Praha will take place May 19–20, and allow people to see inside more than 65 buildings, and spaces not usually open to the public. It will be possible to visit places with exceptional interiors, interesting history and unusual views of Prague usually closed to the public. This year 24 buildings participate at the event for the first time. Those of you who are interested in the history must see Palace Ericson at Old Town or Governor´s Summer Palace which history date back to the Middle Ages. If you prefer architectural pieces from the period between WW1 and WW2, organizers of the event recommend you to see the tenement house by architect Kamil Roškot. There is no entrance fee. You should registrate just in the case you are planning to visit Main Point Karlín. (This registration will be possible from May 10, 12.00). Trams may return to Wenceslas Square. Three options are under consideration and will be discussed by city planning officials April 25. The public will be allowed to comment for a month after the meeting. The idea was floated a few years ago, but no action has been taken since fall 2016. Now the idea is back on the agenda. The options are for new lines from Vinohradská to Hlavní nádraží and Wenceslas Square. The new links would help relieved congestion in the center. Prague’s current tram system is too dependent on the section between Lazarská and Jindřišská, according to City Hall. Inhabitants of Žižkov would benefit from better connections to the center. In the heart of Prague will appear a new cultural pop-up market called Manifesto, combining design boutiques, bookshops, street food stalls and more, created in the long-awaited space at Prague Masaryk Station. The site will open on June and will remain for about two years. Non-profit reSITE creators have been inspired by similar projects located in world capitals (such as Boxpark in London). Manifesto will feature hip bars, restaurants, ice cream stands, burger joints, as well as booksellers and a design boutique. The temporary market will also have an accompanying cultural program, including screenings, concerts, theatrical presentations, DJs, and more. “We think that Prague deserves a place similar to what you can find in London, Taipei, Lisbon and other big cities,” explains Martin Barry, chief of reSITE, the company behind the project. The main goal is to revitalize the area adjacent to Na Florenci street, close to Masaryk’s railway station. Temporary installation will be inside containers. Spring is here at last and it’s time to get out in the sunshine and see what’s going on in town. The next couple of months have lots happening around the city, not least of which are a number of events of prime gastronomical significance to Prague’s cultural life. On 22 April, Streetfood Festival Holešovice will be held as always at Cross Club and promises to be a cross-continental celebration of international street food. You can taste foreign street food, for example, galettes and pancakes, meatloaf in a bun, hamburgers, pizza, tacos, falafel, sandwiches, soups, as well as sushi or Pho, or improving local street food. U.S. President Donald Trump said different cities are under consideration for his planned meeting in “early June or before” with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un. Bloomberg included Prague in a list of nine possible locations, including Oslo, Helsinki, Stockholm, Geneva, Warsaw, Ulaanbaatar, Bankok, and Singapore. Kim Pyong Il, Kim Jong Un’s uncle, is North Korea’s ambassador to the Czech Republic. US President Donald Trump expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the coming weeks – but ties conditions to the encounter: everything is done to make the meeting a “global success” said Trump. The Czech president’s office refused to comment on the speculation. “I will not comment on it in any way,” said Zemans spokesman Jiri Ovcacek. Czech beer consumption dropped by five liters per head to 138 liters per year. On the other hand, beer exports were up by 4.5 percent. In 2017, the Czech Republic produced 20.3 million hectolitres of beer, down 0.7% from the previous year. The statistic was published on Tuesday by the Czech Brewery and Malt Association (ČSPS). Exports of beer in 2017 totaled 4.6 million hectoliters, an increase of 4.5 percent year-on-year. The biggest markets were Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Russia, South Korea and the United States. “From our point of view, the year was not entirely successful, mainly because of poor results in the domestic market, excessive regulation and bureaucracy,” ČSPS chairman František Šámal said. According to him, the drop was caused by lower demand on the domestic market which the Czech Association of Malt Houses and Beer Brewers ascribes to the smoking ban in pubs and restaurants that went into effect in May of 2017. For the first time in history, sales of 11 degree and 12 degree have overtaken sales of over lower quality beers. Degrees refer to a beer’s density due to malt sugar content before brewing. Each model has her personal bodyguard. The faces of the naked models at the exhibition are often covered with masks. Some of them wear leather dog-collars. A controversial plan to keep bicycles out of pedestrian zones in Prague 1 during business hours is set to take effect April 26. The time for public comments has closed, and the district decided not to take any action on them. The move can still be overturned in the courts after a review if somebody sues to block the ban. The Prague 1 Town Hall claims the ban is to protect the safety of pedestrians, but critics point out that accidents involving bikes have been rare. Cyclists will be banned from the lower part of Wenceslas Square, Old Town Square, náměstí Republiky, Celetná street and Karlova street, among other locations, daily from 9 am to 5 pm. From May 1, 2018, Prague Airport will become completely non-smoking. Smoking won’t be allowed even in the booth located at Terminal 2. This was announced on Monday by the representative of the airport, Marika Janoušková, spokeperson for the airport. The entrances to the terminals will equip a total of 14 sites for smoking. The booth was built on customers’ request as a temporary solution and was able to fit up to thirty people. Most major European airports have designated smoking areas both inside and outside. Terminal 1 at Václav Havel Airport used to have a smoking booth, too but it was shut down last Jul because people were not respecting the rules and were smoking outside of the designated area.
