The 9th International Exhibition of Art Dolls, Puppets, and Collectible Teddy Bears will take place at the historic Lucerna Palace from November 8 to 10. The theme of Doll Prague 2024 pays tribute to the great Bedřich Smetana with the quote, “Music is the language of emotion,” commemorating his important anniversary. The main exhibition is curated by Lithuanian artist Olga Norviliene, whose central figure, a symbol of this celebration, is already featured in the event’s posters. This year, organizers invited renowned artists such as Marlaine Verhelst, Connie Lowe, Chomik and Meder, Tamara Pivnyuk, and many leading Czech artists, including Eva Hodinková. A serious accident occurred on Monday morning just before 8 a.m. in Prague’s Palmovka district, where a tram hit a woman who was with her two small children. The woman became trapped under the tram and had to be rescued by firefighters. One of the children, a three-year-old girl, was also injured. The accident took place on Zenklova Street, near the Palmovka tram stop. “There was a traffic accident involving a tram and a pedestrian, who was trapped under the tram,” confirmed police spokesperson Richard Hrdina. The woman was with her two children—a three-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy—at the time of the accident. Firefighters were quickly called to free the woman. “In Zenklova Street, we extricated a person from under the tram and handed her over to paramedics,” the Prague fire department posted on X at around 8:45 a.m. Two rescue teams, along with a doctor and an inspector, responded to the scene. The Stolpersteine project, initiated by the German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992, aims to commemorate persons at the last place that they chose freely to reside before they fell victim to Nazi terror. In recent days, additional Stolpersteins have been laid at various locations around Prague. In Prague 2, for example, you can find new Stolpersteins in Anny Letenské, Italská, Španělská, Legerova, Krkonošská, Lazarská, Plavecká, and Moravská. A total of 24 new stones have been added across the city. These memorials are typically embedded in the pavement outside the victim’s last known residence. Each stone bears the name of an individual, providing a permanent reminder of their life, which was cut short by the atrocities of the Nazi regime. The concept behind the Stolpersteins is that they give back the names and dignity of those who were stripped of both when they were sent to concentration camps. In September, the first 50 employees of Prague Public Transport began testing these new uniforms. A trip to Prague meant to be a source of joy turned into a tragedy for 31-year-old David “Dai” Richards from Wales, UK. On Saturday night, he was fatally injured in Národní třída following an altercation with another tourist. Police report that David was struck in the head with a vodka bottle. His family has described the attack as brutal and unexpected. Some relatives are currently in Prague awaiting the issuance of a death certificate, according to various British and Irish media outlets. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has suspended operations of the Petřín cableway earlier than planned due to damage caused by recent heavy rains. The rains severely impacted the track, primarily due to malfunctioning drainage systems and soil erosion, leaving the route unusable. Repair costs are estimated to reach CZK 15 million, but the company has decided to wait for a complete overhaul scheduled for March next year. “The extreme rainfall, which led to widespread flooding across many parts of the Czech Republic, has damaged the Petřín cableway to such an extent that it can no longer be safely operated without costly repairs,” the DPP stated on its website. Jan Šurovský, a board member and technical director at DPP, explained that the recurring drainage issues on Petřín’s “constantly shifting hill” were the final straw. “The track is damaged and unstable in many places. September 28th is a public holiday in the Czech Republic. It is the feast day of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, and commemorates his death in 935. Stores with an area exceeding 200 square meters, such as supermarkets and furniture stores, will be closed. The prohibition of operation on this day does not apply to gas stations, pharmacies, and stores located in areas with a high concentration of travelers at airports and train stations. The only large supermarkets in Prague that will be legally open are Billa stores at Václav Havel Airport Prague and at the train station Praha hlavní nádraží. Fines for breaching the law can be levied in an amount up to 1 million crowns. The law closing most large stores on holidays will continue to be in effect on Christmas Eve on December 24 (in the afternoon), Christmas Day on December 25, and St Stephen’s Day on December 26.
