The Datank analytical agency evaluates the quality of living conditions in all regions of the Czech Republic using data from independent sources and a survey conducted among 1,600 residents. From August 5 to 11, Prague will host the 14th annual Prague Pride Festival, with this year’s main theme centered around family. Organizers describe the event as “a refreshing cocktail of queer culture, entertainment, and human rights activism.” This year’s festival is supported by three government members, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, and other notable figures. “We want to show that family is not defined by blood relation. What makes a family is love, mutual respect, and unconditional acceptance. Therefore, a family does not always have to be people who are connected by genes,” explains Kamila Fröhlichová, the festival director. She believes that a loving family can also be friends who support a person, give them a sense of belonging, and whom they have chosen themselves. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Czech Republic will host the 2024 Korean Film Festival in Prague from 20 to 22 June at the Světozor cinema. The festival, sponsored by the Korean Film Council, will screen four Korean films recently released in South Korea, including Dog Days (2024), The Book of Fish (2021), Alienoid (2022) and Alienoid: Return to the Future (2024). Korean films, with their diverse genres and stories, have won awards at many international film festivals and are attracting audiences around the world. In the Czech Republic, the release of Parasite in 2019 has been an encouraging success. A temporary memorial for the victims of the December attack at the Faculty of Arts will be unveiled on Jan Palach Square. The focal point is a three-meter-high stone object. The opening ceremony on June 21, 2024, will feature speeches from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Eva Lehečková, the Rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková, the Mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda, and the Mayor of Prague 1, Terezie Radoměřská. Eva Lehečková expressed the need to honor those lost in the attack, emphasizing the importance of providing a place for the public to pay their respects. The memorial will be a crude sandstone monolith from Vyhnánov quarries, designed by Vojtěch Adamec and placed by architect Vojtěch Králíček. This temporary memorial will be available until a permanent one is created based on suggestions from the academic community and victims’ families. On Tuesday, June 18, Prague is expected to experience its first tropical day of the summer season, defined by forecasters as days when temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius. In 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) released heat maps of several European cities during a heatwave. The picture was taken by an instrument called ECOSTRESS, installed on board the International Space Station. It demonstrates to what extent the densely built up areas can warm up during the hot summer months and shows how hot the actual surface would feel to the touch. The observations took place exactly two years ago, on June 18, 2022, when the temperature in Prague reached 30°C. The thermal images revealed that the Holešovice neighborhood had the hottest ground and buildings on that day. Other parts of the city with extremely high land-surface temperatures include the area surrounding the O2 Arena in the Vysočany district and the industrial zone in Štěrboholy. Red Bull Racing has announced that legendary Scottish driver David Coulthard will pilot a Formula 1 car in Prague’s Karlín along Rohanské nábřeží. On Saturday, August 17, the F1 car will be showcased in Prague, and the driver is just as noteworthy. Coulthard is returning to a city he knows well. “I have many friends here and visit Prague more often than my native Scotland. It’s a beautiful city, with great sights, cuisine, and people. A vegan butcher’s shop recently opened in Prague, in what’s thought to be a first in the city. The shop is called Bezmasna, and it recently opened in the Letná district. It provides plant-based versions of popular Czech foods, including chlebíček (Czech sandwiches), cold cuts, and meat loaf. It also has animal-free takes on classic items like steaks, sausages, eggs, burgers, pates, and more. The shop will provide a seasonal offering with a changing menu. Bezmasna hopes to work with both vegan and non-vegan restaurants to increase their plant-based offerings, as well as offer catering for events. Prague aims to become a prime destination for cultured visitors over the next three years. Tourism in Prague is on the rise. Last year, 7.4 million tourists visited the city, a 24% increase from the previous year. Germans were the most frequent visitors, followed by Americans and the British. City councillors have approved the “Respect Prague” strategy for 2024 to 2027. The goal is to maintain the quality of life for residents while supporting tourism. “I believe this strategy will economically support Prague’s entrepreneurs and enrich local culture,” said Jiří Pospíšil, Deputy Mayor of Prague for Culture. The strategy document still needs approval from city representatives. It aims to preserve Prague’s environment and cultural heritage while leveraging the economic benefits of tourism. Prague City Tourism (PCT) will support the strategy through various projects. One such project is a new app called “My Prague,” set to launch soon. From June 21-23, the inaugural Troja Music Festival will be held, co-founded and artistically directed by renowned violinist Josef Špaček. The festival promises extraordinary musical experiences with six concerts in unconventional venues and a welcoming, informal atmosphere. Attendees can look forward to performances by top musicians from the Czech Republic and abroad. The festival ensemble, led by Josef Špaček, will be joined by the Ivan Herák Dulcimer Band, the Epoque Quartet, mezzo-soprano Bella Adamova, and actor Martin Myšička, who will perform at the closing concert.
