The City of Prague, in cooperation with Prague City Tourism launches a pilot project of refundable cups for events held on Prague’s embankments and at the Exhibition Grounds. The aim is to promote the use of sustainable dishware instead of disposable consumer plastics. The city has allocated CZK 2.4 million for the project. After the test phase, the system will operate on a fully commercial basis, without any city support. The City of Prague initiated the reusable cups project with the aim of strengthening the city’s ecology. Prague City Tourism was commissioned by the city to implement the test phase of the project and distribute the cups at events. This will run from September 2022 to February 2024. “At the moment, we have established cooperation with the Prague embankments and the Prague Exhibition Centre. We live in a time when we need to think sustainably, therefore we are launching a pilot operation and providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly version of refundable cups for selected Prague events,” says František Cipro, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Prague City Tourism. Clam-Gallas Palace in the Old Town of Prague ranks among the most prominent architectural monuments of Prague and the Czech Republic. One of the prime works of Prague Baroque architecture, it is a splendid example of historical housing and the lifestyle of the aristocrats. On Wednesday, 28 September, it will welcome guests for the first time after four years of reconstruction. The palace was a famous cultural center of Prague. The planned cost of the renovation project was around CZK 500,000 and it was due to be completed last year. Christmas markets (Vánoční trhy) are a key ingredient of the festive magic in the Czech Republic, and the Prague markets are the most impressive in the country. The Fragment rental housing project is emerging in Karlín and will be “supported” by three torsos and one larger-than-life figure designed by Czech artist David Černý. So far, Černý has installed the foot and hand of one of the giants. The largest figure, which is roughly 25 meters tall, will be assembled in Černý’s studio and attached to the building in its entirety. Construction of the apartment building should be completed by the end of this year. The appearance of the building refers back to Invalidovna’s original purpose and builds an imaginary bridge between history and the present as it evokes a reclining figure being taken care of by David Černý’s grand sculptures. The shape of the apartments’ rooms will mirror the repeating modules that the building is made up of, which create a fragmented impression when seen from afar. The idea of naming the space – where The English College stands – after the British Queen has been approved by the councillors of Prague 9. Vysočany thus wants to pay its respects to the monarch and commemorate her memory, said Prague 9 spokeswoman Marie Kurková. However, the naming of the streets and squares in Prague is decided by the City Council. The author of the new naming proposal is Mayor Tomáš Portlík (ODS). Prague Airport has managed a strong summer season without major complications. From June to August, over 3.8 million passengers were handled, which is one-third less than in the record year 2019. The Prague City Council yesterday approved the purchase of up to 200 new trams. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has been conducting market consultations in the past months. This is the first tender for the supply of new trams in Prague in 17 years. DPP is calling for 30-meter-long, air-conditioned, low-floor trams “adapted to Prague’s specific conditions”. Price, power consumption, warranty period, and life cycle costs will all play a role in the tender. Prague will order 40 vehicles to be delivered by the end of 2026 at an estimated CZK 2.42 billion. Up to 160 additional vehicles are to be purchased under a framework contract. The growing tram network and the need to replace old T3 trams have caused the need for new vehicles, according to the city administration. Despite a high number of tourists deciding to visit the capital city of the Czech Republic, Prague, data show that heritage sites, as well as tourist attractions, have still not reached the levels registered during the pre-pandemic period. Of all the tourist attractions that the country has, it has been revealed that only two of them have reached the 2019 figures. The Old Town hall was visited by around 40 per cent fewer people so far this year compared to the same period in 2019. Prague Castel, the Petřín Tower and the Powder Tower also registered a lower number of visitors. The number of visitors that visited Prague Castle in July was around 50 per cent less than the number of visitors in July 2019. The spokesperson of Prague City Tourism, Klára Malá, said that the tourist attractions have not been registering a high number of visitors as there is a lack of arrivals from Southeast Asia and Russia. A pilot project for the sale of long-term storage products has been launched in five branches of Czech Post. Visitors can now find shelves with drinks, sweets, chips and other snacks. The project takes place in four post offices in Prague and one in the Central Bohemian region. “This is a trial stage of the project which is based on our business strategy. It was preceded by a client survey that received positive feedback. We see in this format an excellent commercial opportunity. The Dancing House is an unusual building that resembles a pair of dancers; it’s is a rare example of top contemporary architecture in Prague, which otherwise abounds with picturesque historical buildings, churches and monuments. Due to its shape, the building is also known as Ginger and Fred after famed dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It’s formed by two central towers; the one known as Ginger is made of glass and steel, while Fred has a concrete body and a metal head.
