Many owners offer the apartment for short-term rent, which the city’s management has been trying to limit unsuccessfully for a long time. Whatever the reasons, tens of thousands of vacant apartments can be found in the capital. Last year, there were 93,627 of them, representing 13 percent of the total 721,332 apartments. This is based on data from the 2021 Census of Flats published by the Czech Statistical Office (CSO). In the Czech Republic as a whole, statisticians record a total of 859 894 unoccupied flats, while the number of occupied ones is 4 480 139, according to the CSO. The capital city will start repairing the Libeň bridge this year. It is to become not only an important traffic artery connecting Holešovice and Palmovka, but also a place of recreation. A cafe and a skatepark will be created under the arched bridge. Over 120 meters of surface, three and a half days of work, seventy cans of paint. The new mural in Karlín is ready. In Křižíkova Street, the artist Michal Škapa completed a giant mural on the facade of house number 61. Few things can spoil the urban landscape like improperly placed advertisement. This is especially valid for a historical city like Prague, whose beauty has few rivals in Europe. The capital city has announced a subsidy program to motivate business owners within the UNESCO Preserve of Historic Prague Centre to modify their banners, shop windows and advertising methods in such a way that respects the architectural value of the building in which they are located. Business owners can get up to CZK 200,000, to cover up to 70 percent of the costs. Remnant of social realism stands the test of time — and so does its name It has borne many names, among them Hotel Družba (Friendship), Hotel Čedok, Hotel Holiday Inn and Hotel Crowne Plaza Prague. But for most of its nearly 50-year existence, the 88-meter tall luxury accommodation establishment in Prague’s upper-class Dejvice neighborhood was known as Hotel International, and it is a name to which its latest owners have now returned after two decades. The only Stalinist building of its size in Prague, construction of the hotel started shortly before the deaths of the longtime Soviet leader and his man in Eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia’s first communist president, Klement Gottwald. The development of the hotel was the idea of the country’s defense minister at the time, Alexej Čepička, who wanted to have a hotel built that would epitomize the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic and boast its rapprochement with the communist Soviet Union to the east.
