Prague’s Best Alternatives to Banned Christmas Markets

The unexpected move to close Christmas markets just as most were about to open has sparked a very negative reaction.  However, there are still places around the city where you can, not only have legally a mulled wine or grog, but also enjoy an authentic Christmas atmosphere. For example, markets are still operating on Wenceslas Square under the horse. The Prague 1 office authorized them as a “cultural event”, said Petr Bidlo, a spokesman for the city district, adding that “according to the organizers, all necessary anti-epidemic measures are observed”. Being a cultural event is not covered by government regulations. The Manifesto Market at Prague’s Anděl is shrouded in light and welcomes visitors with open arms.  “We officially operate as a restaurant with a bar, we are covered, so we are not a market, but a restaurant,” project manager Lisa Ljubčič told a local Czech source, adding that the staff wears respirators and on every corner disinfection is available. “We tried to re-create a Christmas atmosphere here, the decoration were made by our architect Sara Gómez. Street Festival “Behind the Door” Brightens Up Advent in Prague

On Advent Sundays, you can meet processions of angels in the streets of the city center. The main program will be from December 5 till December 19 when people will be able to meet artists, actors and jugglers in the Prague city centre. A seven-meter puppet of an angel will be accompanied by acrobats wandering through the center of Prague. The symbol of Christmas, hope, safety, and protection will greet the inhabitants of Prague on the Old Town Square and its neighborhood.  “We are happy we have managed to find a safe alternative to start the Advent. Christmas Market Stalls at Old Town to be Dismantled Next Week

Taiko will be dismantling the Christmas market stalls in Prague’s Old Town Square within the next week.  Authorities will start dismantling the stalls on Monday at about noon. First, the workers will remove the holiday decorations, then the roofs of the wooden houses. Thus, only the Christmas tree will remain on the square until January 6, 2022. In the upper part of Wenceslas Square, Christmas markets continue despite the government ban. The Prague 1 office authorized them as a “cultural event”, said Petr Bidlo, a spokesman for the city district, adding that “according to the organizers, all necessary anti-epidemic measures were observed”. According to the organizers, drinks and food are served only for take away and the staff warns visitors that they should not consume them on the spot. The capital is now calling on the government to urgently compensate the market operators and stallholders who have already purchased supplies and do not have the means to dismantle their stalls. Prague Calls on the General Public to Help Fight the COVID Crisis

The Czech Red Cross is offering free basic nursing courses to those who want to volunteer in hospitals In collaboration with the Czech Red Cross, the City of Prague has called on the general public to volunteer and help relieve healthcare workers. In addition to this, it has approached outpatient and general practitioners, asking them to become more involved in the fight against COVID. The municipality made this announcement on 3 December, after sharing that the virus is not slowing down and that healthcare facilities are beginning to reach their limits. What is worse, Mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib disclosed that the city predicts hospitals will lack 300 paramedics in the second half of December. For this reason, the capital’s healthcare facilities are in urgent need of help. “We all know that the biggest crisis will occur during the Christmas holidays. Prague Has Opened the Largest Parking Garage in Černý Most

Drivers heading to Prague can now use the large-capacity car park in Černý Most, with a capacity of 886 parking lots. “P + R Černý Most is the largest investment in this infrastructure the city has ever experienced,” said Deputy Mayor for Transport Adam Scheinherr. The construction of the parking house has been started on July 1, 2020. Despite the coronavirus crisis, construction work on this building proceeded according to schedule. With this implementation, the City of Prague has made a significant contribution to improving the traffic situation in Prague 9, where there is a long-term shortage of parking spaces. There are parking spaces with chargers for electric cars (8 lots), parking spaces for CNG / LPG (89 lots) and special lots for people in wheelchairs and parents with prams. P + R Černý Most offers 28 lots for motorcycles and a lockable place where cyclists can store their bikes. Drivers will pay 50 crowns during the day and 100 crowns at night. Prague Dormitories for Homeless People are Opening in an Expanded Regime

About 500 homeless people will be able to sleep in dormitories and similar facilities in Prague this winter. The dormitories will open on December 1 in extended winter operation. In the winter months, capacity will also increase and the operating hours of low-threshold day centers will be extended. Homeless people can also get vaccinated in the facilities, according to Prague councilor Milena Johnová (Praha Sobě) and director of the city’s contributory organization Prague Social Services Center (CSSP) Martin Šimáček. CSSP is the main coordinator of winter services, in which non-profit organizations also participate. There are two facilities for homeless people to evade covid “We managed to vaccinate some homeless people in cooperation with non-governmental organizations during the year, and we want to use winter humanitarian measures to further increase vaccinations. Prague Ranked Among World’s Top 10 Expat Cities

Kuala Lumpur is the top city for expats to live and work abroad in 2021, according to a survey of more than 12,000 respondents from InterNations, an online expat community with more than 4 million global members. The Malaysian capital city leads the list of 57 cities around the world. Málaga, a port city in southern Spain, and Dubai, capital city of the United Arab Emirates, rank as the second and third, respectively. The survey, conducted in January 2021, asked expats to rate their satisfaction across four main categories, including quality of life (like a healthy environment and robust WiFi infrastructure), ease of settling in (such as language barriers and friendliness of local residents), personal finance (such as access to affordable health care) and working abroad (such as job security and a stable local economy).  Prague not only makes it into the global top 10 of the Expat City Ranking (7th) but also into the top 5 for two indices. Director Sam Hargrave has taken to Instagram to confirm that filming has officially begun on Extraction 2, the sequel to Netflix’s hit 2020 action thriller which stars Chris Hemsworth as black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake. After the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping holidays, Giving Tuesday asks us to give back and do good, all while engaging in what the official GivingTuesday website calls “radical generosity” in our everyday lives. Founded in 2012 as a collaboration between New York City’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday began as a way to encourage a “day that encourages people to do good,” according to the website, but has since become its own nonprofit — and a nationwide movement. Prague Won’t Present a Fireworks or Videomapping Show on NYE

There will be no New Year’s fireworks and neither a videomapping show in Prague, Mayor Zdeněk Hřib announced today. The city’s authorities decided to not go ahead with traditional January 1 municipal events in view of the Covid situation. “We did not plan any fireworks this year either, but we were considering alternative ways to welcome the new year. We were waiting for the epidemic situation and anti-epidemic measures to develop. Given the current situation, we abandoned the planned activities,” Hofman said.
