SZ Confirms Plans for New Prague Airport Railway

Czech infrastructure manager SZ has announced a tender worth 4 billion CZK for a contractor to double track and electrify the 5km Kladno – Kladno-Ostrovec section of the 29km Prague – Kladno line, the first element of a project to upgrade the route. SZ has also revealed plans for the wider 50 billion CZK project which will include the first dedicated rail connection to Prague Havel Airport. Work on the Kladno – Kladno-Ostrovec upgrade is scheduled to start in 2022 and be completed in 2024. The chosen contractor for the tender will also revamp Kladno station. The entire project involves electrifying and track-doubling the existing Prague – Kladno line and building a new branch from Prague-Ruzyně to an underground station at the airport. Work on the branch line is expected to start in 2024 and continue until 2029 with a separate tender expected for the airport station, which will serve the airport’s two terminals. Construction will also begin in 2026 to extend this line to Kladno via Jeneč to complete a loop. 125 Years Ago Today: The First Film Screened in Prague

On Oct. 18, 1896, Prague held its first-ever film screening at the Hotel U černého koně. Optician and mechanic Adolf Oppenheimer carried out the screening, screening only short films at the time.  Dismas Šlambor, alias Viktor Ponrepo, established the first permanent Czech cinema a few years later in September of 1907. The theater opened in the house U Modré štiky located on Prague’s Karlova St.  Ponrepo’s father was a glider, but rather than endeavor to take over the family business, Ponprepo worked as a traveling magician for a while. When interest in the magic business tanked at the turn of the 19th century, Ponprepo purchased both a phonograph and a cinematograph, kicking off his career in film.  His Ponrepo cinema held 200 seats, somewhat resembling a family business. After the theater’s establishment, moving pictures became increasingly popular for the city residents. By 1911, there were nine cinemas located at Prague’s center and another 13 in the suburbs, making for an uptick of 22 cinemas over the course of four years alone.  Another three years later, and there were 39 theaters constructed in the city, seeing around 12,000 visitors on weekdays and up to 80,000 on Sundays. Famous and Mysterious Frida Kahlo: Hundreds of Photographs from her Collection Can be Seen in Prague

The Gallery of the Capital City of Prague has exhibitions for over two hundred photographers and their collections. From October 15, 2021, through January 16, 2022, Frida Kahlo will have a featured exhibition where viewers will see her extensive collection of over 6,000 items in the House at the Stone Bell. She was an influential and mysterious Mexican artist whose featured archive wasn’t discovered until 2003. The organizers of the event say that some of the photographs found were done by other famous photographers that befriended Frida including Man Ray and Edward Weston. These photographs are not only historically valued but artistically valued. This is a traveling exhibition and has been seen in various parts of the world with more than half a million spectators. She was born in Mexico City in 1907 and died in 1954, and throughout her life she endured many tragic events. When she was 18 years old she suffered from a severe case of polio and was injured in a bus accident. The 9th Signal Festival of Light Starts in Prague

After last year’s break, Signal will light up and revive Prague’s spaces in a big way. A total of 4 routes, 15 installations in public space, 6 installations in augmented reality, and a rich accompanying program. Customs Officers Seized 63 Kilograms of Drugs at Prague Airport

Last week, customs officers discovered 63 kilograms of the edible khat drug at Václav Havel Airport in Prague. The drug was smuggled in the luggage of three foreigners aged 23, 24 and 27, who traveled on the regular route Tel Aviv – Prague – London. “The contraband was discovered on the basis of a risk analysis of the passengers on the flight,” said a spokeswoman of the Ruzyně customs officers, Šárka Miškovská. After the discovery of drugs was made, they were taken to the police with a proposal to initiate criminal proceedings on suspicion of committing the crime of illegal production and another handling of narcotic and psychotropic substances and poisons. Edible kata is a tree or shrub grown in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It contains substances that have stimulant effects like those of amphetamines. Prague’s Astronomical Clock Turns 611 Today

The oldest part of the Orloj, the mechanical clock and astronomical dial, dates back to 1410 when it was made by clockmaker Mikuláš of Kadaň and Jan Šindel, then later a professor of mathematics and astronomy at Charles University. The first recorded mention of the clock was on 9 October 1410. Later, presumably around 1490, the calendar dial was added and the clock facade was decorated with gothic sculptures. The Prague Astronomical Clock is a unique medieval monument. It was built during the last breaths of the cultural boom in the Bohemian lands that began under the reign of Charles IV, Bohemian king and Holy Roman Emperor, who transformed Prague into a European centre of learning, culture and power. The Old Town Astronomical Clock was built as one of the last medieval archaic astronomical clocks. These served a different purpose and were of a different character than the modern astronomical clocks that emerged in Europe with the onset of the Renaissance. Prague is Urging Residents to Return to ‘Normal Life’

Since the outbreak of COVID, cities have changed tremendously. During lockdowns, businesses remained closed and residents stayed home. In other words, the streets suddenly became quiet and empty. Apple Films New Ad for iPhone 13 in Průhonice’s Castle 

The Czech Republic has frequently served as the backdrop for Apple commercials in the past, and to showcase the new iPhone 13’s cinematic mode, Apple returned to the country to film inside the local castle at Průhonice. The cinematic mode allows users to focus more steadily between several levels in a scene, facilitating a base process of film narration.
