By the end of the summer, the Prague mayor’s office will announce a tender for a construction company that will build a new bridge across the Vltava, connecting Zlíchov and Dvorce (Prague 5 and Prague 4). The contract value is CZK 972 million. The proposed Dvorecký most (Dvorecký Bridge) would fill the substantial gap between Barrandovský most (Barrandov Bridge) and Palackého most (Palacký Bridge). Seven design proposals advanced to the second round of selection, and a commission selected the concept by design studios Tubes and Atelier 6. The new bridge will be used by public transport vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, but not cars. The project includes the design of a new Dvorecký most tram stop. The Prague 4 side of the bridge is planned next to Žluté lázně by Jeremenkova Street. The Prague 5 side will be near the Lihovar tram stop. Dvorecký most should cost roughly CZK 1 billion. Prague Council approved the construction of the metro line D in the section Pankrác – Nové Dvory. Construction will take eight years and it should cost CZK 52 billion, suggests a document discussed by Prague city’s municipal Transport Committee. The city authorities are also counting on subsidies from European funds. The Metro D line has faced numerous delays. Construction was originally supposed to start in 2010. There was a petition in 2016 to change the approved designs for the stations between Pankrác to Písnice because the designs are already outdated, and do not reflect current trends in mass transit. Metro D will connect the city center to neighborhoods in the southern part of the city that now has poor public transportation options. The trains will be driverless. The Liechtenstein Palace in Prague opened its doors to the public on Saturday, June 5, after a break of several months, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The first guided tour in Liechtenstein Palace will take place at 9 am and the last at 4 pm on Saturday. Respirators are compulsory. The Liechtenstein Palace was built on the grounds of five city houses in 1591 and rebuilt in Classical style in the 18th century. The princely family of Lichtensteins gradually lost interest in the Palace and sold it to the Earl of Ledebour. Later on, the Palace housed many different institutions, until finally in the 1980’s it was acquired by the Academy of Musical Arts. It’s generally used for representative purposes by The Office of the Government of the Czech Republic. On the second floor, there are apartments, which stayed, for example, Spanish king Juan Carlos with his wife Sofie, British queen Elisabeth II, Japanese emperor Akihito with Empress Michiko. For berry lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, it’s time to get outside, enjoy the sun, and go to one of the many public parks in Prague where one can pick cherries and other fruits for free. The city of Prague owns 36 orchards, where anyone who wants to can pick fruit, either as a sweet snack on a picnic, or bring home for later. It is completely legal to pick the fruit and is there for the public to enjoy. One of the most famous, is the Třešňovka Hill in Prague 9, near the shopping center Kaufland. In the space at the back part of the orchard, you can rent a quality ladder for only 50 CZK. Baskets are also available. A summer cinema will open under the Žižkov Television Tower for the third year in a row. The project called “Star Summer” starts on June 30 and runs until September 17. Cheapos rejoice, it’s finally here! Prague’s first-ever Primark will officially open its doors on Wenceslas Square on June 17 at 9 am. Primark’s entry onto the Czech market is expected to create more than 300 jobs, the company stated in its press release. Czechs have long been waiting for the store to open. To mark Children’s Day (1 June) in the Czech Republic, Prague opened a “Closet for Single Parent Families” at the Prague Market Hall. There, the community can donate items for single parents and families in need. According to the municipality, the closet has been operating in several other locations in the Czech capital. More importantly, it has raised CZK 10 million (EUR 393,145) and helped more than 400 families so far. How does it work? Citizens can donate clothes, shoes, toys, school supplies, backpacks, and small electronic appliances to the closet. In addition to this, they can also donate children’s clothes, books, bicycles, skates, helmets, etc. Single parents and families in need must register before visiting. They can then either take items free-of-charge or work in the establishment in exchange for food.
