Blanket security checks at Prague Castle are ending from Friday, a spokesperson for President Miloš Zeman said on Tuesday. For many years Prague Castle was open for free to everyone. Having several entrances, it was very easy to get inside without waiting. Since summer 2016, Czech president Miloš Zeman decided to put security checks in place. Effective 1 April 2021, Prague Airport will launch a service for a new segment of passengers transferring in Prague between flights operated by different air carriers. The Fly via Prague service will increase the potential of the airport in Prague as a transfer hub and provide greater passenger comfort during the times air traffic is to be gradually resumed. Artist Kurt Gebauer has installed a new sculpture at Victory Square in Prague 6 dubbed the ‘Early Capitalism Caterpillar’. The art installation is 11 meters tall. The sculpture was conceptualized by Gebauer in 1997 but had no financial backup for its installation. During the communist era, a statue of Lenin stood in place of where the sculpture is now. That statue has since been torn down after the revolution. “That was supposed to be the joke that the Caterpillar of early capitalism would be where Lenin stood. Even then, it was supposed to provoke a discussion about the state of society. What will this capitalism become? Everything will be eaten or a beautiful butterfly will hatch…,” Gebauer commented. The Czech capital Prague will join other major capitals and cities around the world in Earth Hour on Saturday night, turning off lights at major sites. Landmarks all over the capital, including Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, and the Žižkov TV tower, will be going dark between 8:30 and 9:30 pm, to call attention to the looming threat of climate change. Prague city hall has rented a luxury hotel where homeless people who contract COVID-19 can convalesce and those who come into contact with someone with the disease can isolate. The city’s Centre of Social Services (CSSP) deputy director Ludmila Tomešová said those housed in the hotel were offered three meals a day, full medical attention and television and other amenities while they recovered. “So the hotel … has guests, even if they are not standard commercial ones, and it is full all the time,” she told Reuters at a four-star Prague hotel in the city centre that has housed about 250 people since November. As of March 18, 2021, Prague councilors approved stricter rules regarding buses’ entry into the city center, whilst trucks over 3.5 tonnes are prohibited. Moreover, the new rules are to drive out irregular sightseeing tours for tourists, often operated by decade-old buses. Tourist buses will need to have a clear route and timetable. From 1st of July next year, they will also have to meet at least the Euro 6 emission standard. For a diesel vehicle to be Euro 6 compliant, it can’t emit more than 80mg/km of NOx (nitrogen oxides) gases, while a petrol vehicle can emit no more than 60mg/km. According to the city management, before the pandemic, the intensity of commercial bus traffic was such that the center was jam-packed and saturated. This decision has been reached after a thorough and careful evaluation of the current circumstances related to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Although the situation is slowly improving, the lack of time until the originally planned June deadline makes it impossible to finalize work on such a large project. We believe the next Metronome Prague Festival will take place in all its glory June 23 – 26 next year. All the purchased tickets will remain valid,” said the organizers.
