The “Kings of the Sun” exhibition, part of an international project documenting the greatest archaeological discoveries of Czech Egyptologists, will remain at the National Museum through September. This exceptional exhibition, which has suffered repeated upsets to its schedule from the corona-virus pandemic, has had its end date pushed back by the organizers, thanks to the generosity of the lenders. Do take the opportunity to visit, once the government anti-pandemic restrictions loosen and museums become accessible again. Kings of the Sun The uniqueness of this exhibition, indicated by its insurance cover of CZK 1 billion, is underlined by the fact that never before have so many major artifacts been loaned abroad from Egypt as for the Kings of the Sun exhibition. The exhibition is unparalleled not only because of the previously unseen rare artifacts, never before exhibited in the world but also for its modern concept and design. The utilization of multimedia technologies and impressive architecture will allow visitors to experience the distinctive atmosphere of Royal Abusir. There are priceless exhibits here, from many of the world’s museums – be they the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, or from museums in Berlin, Leipzig, Hanover, Heidelberg, Hildesheim...
All year round Prague’s islands are a great source of countless outdoor activities. They represent a serene oasis just a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. The greenery of the islands allows for romantic strolls, picnics with friends, or jogging and other sports activities. 1) STŘELECKÝ ISLAND There is a small sandy beach on the northern tip, a unique spot where the river sings louder than the city. The spired building on the right bank is home to the museum of Bedřich Smetana, a composer who was inspired by the Vltava River for his famous symphonic poem. 2) ŠTVANICE A busy motorway cuts through this island, which was traditionally devoted to sports. Prague’s oldest tennis club is here as well as a white water training facility and a bicross track. The slightly run-down villa next to it, which dates from 1824, has a bar where alternative theatre performances are organised. 3) CÍSAŘSKÝ ISLAND Half of this island is occupied by water treatment plants, the other half belongs to horses. Situated between the Royal Game Reserve and Troja, it is a perfect place to ride out. Confident riders (only!) can book a horse with Mr....
By Joshua Donaldson, the editor of Youth Time Magazine. Jiří Ježek’s Team Birell won the inaugural Battle Of The Teams, beating Team Volkswagen by nearly 300 points in Prague on Sunday morning. The event, a marathon around the streets of central Prague, was the first of its kind, pitting four teams of eight world-class and homegrown long-distance running stars against each other, where every runner, no matter their time or ability, counted to the final points tally. The winning squad had Kenyan star, Benson Kiprupto, to thank for much of their success as he won the elite men’s race with a late burst on the final lap. In the elite women’s race, Purity Rionoripo was the star of the show, setting a new personal best on her way to victory by more than a minute. The Czech national championships also took place on the same course. Vit Pavlišta won the men’s race whilst Eva Vrabcová Nývltová beat Moira Stewartová to win the women’s edition and, in the process, qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next month. After the unique start at 6.30 am CET on the iconic Charles Bridge in the centre of Prague, the racers headed out for...
Prague Airport is launching a new tender to change the way taxi services are provided to and from the airport. A prerequisite for the tender is a guarantee of compliance with a pre-agreed price. The passenger will know the cost of the trip even in advance and it cannot be changed by the driver. The agreement with the airport will last for five years, taking effect from 2022. The winning company will have the right to park cars right at the exit from the airport, as well as place information kiosks in both terminals. Passengers will be able to order a taxi to the city center (or to the airport) through a special mobile application, by phone, or through the kiosks in the terminals. Other conditions request by the new taxi company include the ability of the drivers to speak English, provide a child seat or wheelchairs upon request, the possibility to pay by credit card, and a rating system for drivers. In the first quarter of 2021, the number of passengers going through Prague’s Václav Havel Airport dropped by 90 percent year on year to just under 251,000.
Marathon was always perceived as an individual race. RunCzech wants to change this tradition and therefore brings a new revolutionary approach, which will offer more tension and drama than it is usual in long-distance running. The Battle of the Teams will kick off this Sunday at 6:30 from Charles Bridge, the very first “team” marathon, where every runner and every time matters more than usual. The race will be over as soon as the last runner will cross the finish line. The historic centre of Prague will gladly welcome the 32 best worldwide marathoners on Sunday 30th of May, Czech athletes will not be missing and you can look forward to seeing Czech stars such as Jiří Homoláč, Eva Vrabcová Nývltová, Vítek Pavlišta, or young prospect Moira Stewartová. Marathon as a team sport It is not only about race; it is a brand new approach for running in itself. This approach is highly appreciated by long-term partner adidas, which believes that sport should be pushing boundaries and seeking new opportunities, while others might perceive challenges. This also supports their latest campaign called Impossible Is Nothing. “The main purpose is to change the overall perception of marathon racing and bring more tension...
NEBU-owner Sunil, businessman, foodie, and owner of various culinary establishments, has recently opened up a bistro serving modern Indian cuisine that’s freshly prepped and ready to serve. NEBU is extremely proud of their “charcoal” tandoor which Sunil insists makes all the difference in flavour to their naan breads and tikkas. The menu boasts dishes such as Indian tacos with masala beef, paneer tikka wraps, chicken samosas, and lentils with mushroom curry, to name a few. NEBU bistro is located at the new food market Backyard Kotva behind Prague department store in Náměstí Republiky. The bistro’s menu items look absolutely delightful, full of color, packed with culture, and fitting for the pre-summer season. Prague Morning recommends that you try out the establishment’s goodies for yourself, as we’ve had the chance to indulge in their menu as well. NEBU bistro also serves refreshing and complimentary beverages, such as their Mango lassi – perfect to fight off the heat and their signature cocktail Mango Chili martini topped with prosecco. A bit of the background story behind this culinary name – Sunil moved to a house in Nebušice, which is where ‘NEBU’ comes from, and decided to open his own restaurants after missing the...
An invite-only venue named Casa Eminente is parallel to a gorgeous secret hideaway bar in the heart of Prague. Casa Eminente’s address is not accessible through search engines – it’s solely through an invitation that people can access this one-of-a-kind location. Its exclusivity and mystery make it very attractive. At Casa Eminente you can taste premium spirits rum from Moët Hennesy. The star is however the Cuban premium rum Eminente, brought from the heart of the Caribbean island to the Czech Republic by Moët. This rum embodied the dream of César Martí, the youngest rum master in the history of Cuba. Thanks to his strong determination and skill in the craft, Martí created a new type of rum that combines the richness and depth of taste of traditional rum production from the 19th century. In addition, Eminente is one of the few Cuban rums to have received the requested status of “Denominación de Origen Protegida” from the Cuban Regulatory Board. Moreover, a selected few can indulge in tropical drinks, food that complements their cocktails, and music. Additionally, during the summer, the interior is covered by a green and lush terrace. Casa Eminente was created by Ingrid V. Lermen and her...
The iconic Prague building has officially reopened its rooftop to the public. The rooftop will be accessible for three days – May 27, 28, and 29, then the organizers will draw up a regular schedule for the summer months. Lucerna Palace is a legendary place that made the history of the country and in some way changed the character of the whole city. It was inaugurated in 1909. The then builder and developer Václav Havel, the grandfather of the well-known president Václav Havel, raised the city to a metropolis with the building. Lucerna brought the inhabitants of the city interesting opportunities for the time. It was the opening of a cabaret, a Japanese tea room, a cinema or a large social hall for concerts. Legends of the world music performed in the grand hall. The Beach Boys, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, and many, many others. The Great Hall in Lucerna is a prestigious and renowned venue for concerts for both Czech and foreign performers. We highly recommend going there at sunset: watching the sun hide behind the Prague Castle while bathing the Old Town in golden rays gives a whole new meaning to the expression ‘Golden Prague’! Opening hours are from 16:00...
Over and over again, the Czech City of Prague has proven its commitment to the environment. The capital has not only vowed to plant 1 million trees in 8 years but it has also received the European Forest City Award 2021 for its environmental efforts. Now, it has launched a new project: “Adopt a Tree”. Residents can choose a tree to care for The municipality is involving citizens, urging them to help the city achieve its green goals. With the launch of its latest green project, it invites residents to choose, adopt, and care for a tree from Prague 14. In a press release by the City of Prague, the municipality notes that “Adopt a Tree” is part of a bigger project: “Build Prague”. This larger initiative seeks to raise awareness of how important it is to care for and protect the greenery in the capital. Mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib commented on the city’s efforts and goals: “We promised that we would plant a million trees in Prague in eight years and that we will succeed in fulfilling our plan. So far, we have planted 370,000 trees. […] But the care of planted trees is also important. The city is our shared public space,...
The students of art universities in Prague united and created the new digital gallery Vyšeart which was launched on 5th of May 2021 and will last until 31st of August 2021. Vyšeart connects 28 students of various art fields who created 14 pairs where 1 musician and 1 visual artist collaborate with each other. Each pair made one piece of art which consisted of musical aspects and visual art. The final artworks are displayed in the park of The National Cultural Monument Vyšehrad. Visitors of Vyšeart discover the artworks with their own smartphone and through QR codes which are installed in the park. The project is supported by The Borough of Prague 2, The National Cultural Monument Vyšehrad, HAMU, UMPRUM, AVU, and OSA. The idea of a multifaceted project has arisen among students of art who felt the need and desire to meet other students and to gain new creative experience. The organizers are students Magdaléna Ochmanová from Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (HAMU), Hana Sommerová from Academy of Fine Arts (AVU), Eliška Hanuš, Jarka Straková and Mariana Pecháčková from Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague (UMPRUM) who have started and developed the idea of Vyšeart. The annual music festival United Islands of Prague will run June 25–26 offering free music on stages around the city. The 18th edition will feature 35 concerts on 5 different stages by talented performers across musical genres. After five years, the festival will move from Karlín back to the islands right in the very heart of Prague: Střelecký Island, Kampa, Children’s Island and Janáček Embankment The organizers will also prepare a unique non-musical program, which will thematically link sustainability and diversity. Besides music, you can look forward to lectures by inspiring speakers. “This year’s return to the islands will only be a harbinger of a full return in 2022, but we hope to enjoy it with the audience. It will be an opportunity to reminisce about the old days or, conversely, to experience music for the first time in places that have long been part of the main idea of the United Islands of Prague,” said David Gaydečka, the festival’s organizer. Between concerts, you will definitely not be bored, as we have a lot of activities for you in cooperation with our ambassadors and partners. During the festival, you will be able to try out various disciplines under the auspices of...
Prague 3 decided to fight cigarette pollution in a creative way. In the past few days, the City Hall has created and installed ten unique ashtrays. The ashtrays are in the form of cigarettes – and they’re huge. The move was inspired by a similar project in Vienna, which had been running for several years already. The prototype for the large cigarette ashtrays was made by Jaromír Frek. “I wouldn’t say the production was demanding. We did two versions, one pilot and one final. We were tinging paint and adjusting technical things,” he says. The ultimate aim is to get people to throw the cigarette butts in the ashtrays, instead of leaving them on the ground. “Cigarette butts are garbage like any other and do not belong in public space. Cleaning from some surfaces is practically impossible,” explains Jiří Ptáček, mayor of Prague 3. A loose cigarette butt only decomposes in 15 years. If the project is successful, the cigarette ashtrays will be installed in more locations. A total of ten ashtrays are located on Kostnice Square, in Seifertova, Lipanská, Koněvova and Biskupcova streets, two are on Jiřího z Poděbrady Square, another at the intersection of Táboritská and Ondříčkova streets and at...
