Prague has added mobile coverage to three new stations: Flora, Luka, and Nové Butovice. 42 out of 61 stations in the metro network are now covered with a 4G LTE signal. If work continues at its current pace, passengers should have access to a 4G signal ‘in all sections of the subway at the end of 2021’. The costs of covering the capital’s metro stations and the tunnels amount to CZK 12 million and CZK 18 million, respectively. Construction works and cable installation in Prague Metro were performed in phases and during night hours when the metro is closed to the public (1:00 to 3:00 a.m.). The total distance between the four new stations where the cable will be installed in both directions is 11.6 km. It takes at least 50 hours to establish a 4G LTE network in one station; and, to install the network cables in both directions of the tunnel between any two stations takes approximately 2 months. While the Czech Republic continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, the covid pandemic has certainly impacted the number of jobs available. The Czech unemployment rate is at the highest it’s been in the last few years, around 4%. What the figures don’t show is the number of people who are technically still employed yet on significantly reduced hours or pay due to most restaurants surviving on takeaway orders and most shops still closed. Particularly in Prague, the 73% drop off in tourism over the last year has exacerbated the issues workers and employers are facing and it’s no surprise employers in other sectors are cautious about hiring. The company E-sharing s.r.o., which provides shared electric mopeds under the brand blinkee.city, has not been idle during the winter break. Their customers can rely on a disinfectant in the trunk of each vehicle. Polish franchise blinkee.city has entered the domestic market only last June but its shared electric mopeds have quickly become popular in Prague. In order to offer enhanced comfort to drivers in the second season, the team worked forward technical and practical improvements. “We have gathered feedback from our customers for the past months and based on that our team added improvements to our mopeds which will move eco-driving to a new level. The aim of the initiative is to make the capital a more modern and environmentally friendly city. In the next two years, The Municipal Society of Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP) plans to add several hundred public lighting poles from which electric vehicles can be recharged. This initiative builds on a pilot project for which THMP had collaborated with electricity supplier PREdistribuce in Vinohrady, Prague to create 13 EV charging streetlight points last year. This project has been spread over six years with the hopes of installing around 3,000 to 6,000 streetlight EV charging points in the country. Within two years, THMP aims to add over 400 of these lamp posts in 12 selected regions. According to THMP’s website, the City Hall Councillor Jan Chabr estimates that by 2030, there will be around 500 to 700 thousand electric vehicles in the Czech Republic. The construction of the world-class Vltava Philharmonic concert hall in Prague’s Holešovice neighborhood is one step closer to realization, as Prague city councillors have approved the continuation of the project. The approval was based on a usability study completed by an international consortium led by the renowned Henning Larsen studio, in collaboration with AEA and Buro Happold. The project will now move to the Prague City Assembly; if it gets the green light there, preparations will begin for an international architectural competition. The competition would be announced in the second half of 2021. It will be preceded by a detailed analysis on the financing of the Philharmonic’s operations. “Prague is not just an open-air museum merely capitalising on its rich history. On Monday, Prague City approved a plan to implement over 750 charging stations for electric vehicles within the next four years. The charging stations will be placed strategically throughout the metropolis and in the following five years there will be several thousand more charging stations installed. The legislation approved was titled General Development of the Charging Infrastructure in the Capital City of Prague until 2030 and city management also approved a plan for the construction of charging infrastructure. Prague will have a new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists. It will connect Wenzigova and U Zvonařky streets. The construction could begin in the second half of next year, completion is scheduled for spring 2023. The footbridge will be 45 meters long and 4 meters wide. The estimated price is around CZK 30 million without VAT. “The footbridge will connect Nové Město and Vinohrady. Better times are finally coming and the wishes of our citizens will be heard,“ praised the Deputy Mayor of Prague 2, Jan Korseska (ODS). The final version of the footbridge has been selected from a dozen designs, assessed by the National Monuments Institute. The construction of the first building has begun in the northern part of Prague’s Masaryk railway station. The mixed-use project, which is estimated to cost up to CZK 10 billion, will include the construction of new office, retail and residential space as well as a substantial amount of new public space. The revitalization project of the Masaryk Station area is being prepared by Penta Real Estate in cooperation with České dráhy (the Czech Railways) and Správa železnic (SŽ, the Railway Infrastructure Administration).
