Prague will have a new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists. It will connect Wenzigova and U Zvonařky streets. The construction could begin in the second half of next year, completion is scheduled for spring 2023. The footbridge will be 45 meters long and 4 meters wide. The estimated price is around CZK 30 million without VAT. “The footbridge will connect Nové Město and Vinohrady. Better times are finally coming and the wishes of our citizens will be heard,“ praised the Deputy Mayor of Prague 2, Jan Korseska (ODS). The final version of the footbridge has been selected from a dozen designs, assessed by the National Monuments Institute. According to the jury, the work of Petr Tej “fits architecturally into its surroundings, and with the stairs on its sides.”
The construction of the first building has begun in the northern part of Prague’s Masaryk railway station. The mixed-use project, which is estimated to cost up to CZK 10 billion, will include the construction of new office, retail and residential space as well as a substantial amount of new public space. The revitalization project of the Masaryk Station area is being prepared by Penta Real Estate in cooperation with České dráhy (the Czech Railways) and Správa železnic (SŽ, the Railway Infrastructure Administration). Based on the architectural and urban planning competition, the project designed by Zaha Hadid Architects was chosen for the revitalization of the Masaryk Station. “Other times, the construction would take a maximum of 18 months. This first phase will take over two years. Data from the Czech Statistical Office has indicated that the number of tourists visiting Prague last year dropped significantly to 27 percent of 2019’s numbers. The report finds that only 2,178,267 visitors came to Prague last year. The massive drop in tourism is not surprising during a global pandemic where many European countries have restricted movement throughout the European Union. Last summer, however, saw a 16 percent increase from 2019 in domestic tourism as Czechs from other regions flocked to visit the capital in the summer months. The past year saw about 700,000 domestic tourists visiting Prague followed closely by our neighbors from Germany, Poland, and Slovakia. The number of tourists from Russia and the United Kingdom hovered around eight hundred thousand in 2019 but decreased to 200,000 in 2020’s Covid-stricken Prague. Prague City Tourism is a government-funded organization that has successfully executed marketing campaigns like the At Home in Prague campaign which sought to increase domestic tourism during 2020’s restrictions and saw a 16 percent increase from the previous year. Husqvarna Urban Green Space Index (HUGSI) has named Lithuanian capital Vilnius the greenest city in Europe. Prague ranks 9th. By applying computer vision and deep learning techniques on satellite images, HUGSI unveiled that 56% of Prague territory is greenery and by this measure, the city ranks 13th in the world. HUGSI-index was announced for the second year running. In total, satellite images of 155 cities across 60 different countries were analyzed in order to evaluate their greenness and provide valuable insights about the size, proportion, distribution, and health of green space in urban areas. The research revealed that 28% of all Prague territory consists of trees, and 27% of grass areas. HUGSI is a digital innovation initiative developed by Husqvarna in collaboration with 20tree.ai. The ambition is to help safeguard and improve the maintenance of green spaces in urban areas. Rekola, a bike-sharing company that offers its service not only in Prague, but also in seven other Czech cities, has started an initiative of sharing snow gliders in Prague, Brno, and Olomouc. Because of the heavy snowfall in recent days, parts of the Czech Republic are covered in snow. This explains the many cross-country skiers and tobogganers sighted out, especially in Prague. Where can you find one of these gliders? Rekola has set them up on popular hills such as Letná, Petřín, Vítkov, Riegrovy sady and Stromovka. That’s just in Prague.
