How Will the ‘Covid Passport’ System Work for Tourists in Europe?

The EU parliament has given the green light to push ahead with Covid-19 passports in the hope of allowing the bloc’s tourism industry to open this summer. But what will the passes mean for tourists and holidaymakers in practice? We explain. The European Parliament recently voted overwhelmingly in favour of adopting an EU-wide Covid-19 passport, which it hopes will be ready in time for the summer holiday season. MEPs hope the passports will make travel easier and safer, and boost the economies of tourism-dependent nations. What are these Covid passports? The documents, formerly known as “Digital Green Certificates” until MEPs changed it to the “EU Covid-19 certificate”, will be available to EU nationals and legal residents – including Britons – who wish to travel within the EU. The idea is that the document – which can be printed or stored electronically – will provide proof of vaccination, a recent negative coronavirus test, or recent recovery from the virus – meaning the holder has antibodies in their system. Prague’s Václav Havel Airport Slowly Restarts Service, 35 Destinations Officially Confirmed

Prague’s Václav Havel Airport is slowly crawling back to life. In May, other airlines announced their return to Prague, and a number of carriers will also expand their operations to other destinations. Smartwings is resuming from tomorrow its service to Split, Croatia, and from Wednesday on Lanzarote. In May, Czech Airlines will start flying to Iceland and Amsterdam. The Latvian airBaltic is also returning to Prague, so far it will only fly to Riga once a week. Passengers can also fly to Barcelona with Vueling’s. So far, traffic to 35 destinations has been officially confirmed. Ryanair currently flies from Prague only to London, but the Dublin-based carrier will resume flights to Malaga next week. From May 16, it will add a total of 24 more destinations in a single week. New Rules Announced by Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Summer Vacation Traveling

As countries begin to open up their borders, vacation plans are already underway for many.  Those looking to travel abroad for the summer holiday must refer to the new travel rules from the Ministry of Foreign affairs. The guidelines for traveling abroad have officially been valid starting  April 26. Prospective travelers planning their summer trips are encouraged to refer to the website for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There you can find everything you would need to know regarding entering other countries and what is required upon entry. It is important to keep in mind that each country has their own requirements for entry and these requirements can change from day to day as conditions are constantly changing. Some countries will only require travelers to show negative covid tests and other destinations will require a quarantine upon entry. Countries like Croatia and Greece are already anticipating a successful tourism season this summer and merely require a negative PCR test, proof of vaccination, or antigen confirmation for those crossing their borders. France is First EU Member State to Start Testing Digital Covid Travel Certificate

France has become the first EU member state to begin testing a digital coronavirus travel certificate as part of a Europe-wide scheme that Brussels hopes will allow people to travel more freely within the bloc by the summer. The TousAntiCovid app, part of the country’s contact tracing program, has been upgraded to store negative Covid-19 test results on travelers’ mobile phones and is being trialed on flights to Corsica and overseas départements from this week. The app has so far been downloaded by nearly 15 million French citizens so far. When will it be ready for use? According to a French official, at first, the certificates will only be used for travel, but they “could eventually be adopted for public events such as concerts, festivals and trade fairs,” although not for bars and restaurants. First, the system will be tested on flights from the mainland to Corsica, then to other overseas territories in the coming weeks. How will it work? Smartwings Resumes Flights to St. Petersburg

The Czech air carrier Smartwings resumes its flights between Prague and St. Petersburg from 29 April 2021. The scheduled service to/from St. Petersburg will be operated twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays. The operation to the second largest city of Russia was suspended last spring due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The flights are already opened for sales and tickets can be purchased on the website of both Smartwings and Czech Airlines (under the existing code-share cooperation) as well as by travel agents worldwide. During the upcoming Summer season, Smartwings Group, which includes both Smartwings and Czech Airlines, offers flights from airports in the Czech Republic to 74 destinations in Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Croatia, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia, UAE, Cabo Verde, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Malta, Ukraine and Iceland. Train Revolution: Czech Railways Orders 180 Passenger Cars to Modernize Its Services

The national carrier Czech Railways (České dráhy – ČD) continues to modernize its fleet serving long-distance domestic and international lines. The consortium of Siemens Mobility and Škoda Transportation has won the tender for 20 Viaggio Comfort nine-car non-traction units including control cars, designed for a maximum operating speed of 230 km/h. The cars will be delivered from 2024 to 2026 and the order is valued at around half a billion EUR. “We are pleased that ČD is once again relying on our successful Viaggio passenger cars for expanding and modernizing its services”, says Gerhard Greiter, CEO of Region North-East Europe at Siemens Mobility. “These new cars will bear the mark of our Czech engineering department. Travel Agencies Prepare for the Tourist Season as Million Czechs Plan to Go Abroad

Travel agencies optimistically await the beginning of the tourist season as some of them report a threefold increase in interest in spending summer holidays abroad compared to last year. According to the agencies, people grew accustomed to coronavirus measures and are more adapted than before to travel under extraordinary circumstances caused by the pandemic. Covid passports are likely to become a hallmark of traveling in 2021, indicating whether a holder was vaccinated or tested negative and ensuring there are as few hindrances as possible during their vacation. So far, tourists have shown the greatest interest in EU destinations, such as Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, or Spain. “We have sold thousands of summer tours at this point. Thirty percent of clients head to Greece. New Night Trains to Connect Prague, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin

Plans to launch a Prague – Dresden – Berlin – Amsterdam – Brussels night train services have been unveiled by established Czech open access operator RegioJet and newly-formed Dutch overnight train co-operative European Sleeper. “We’re planning to start at the beginning of the 2022 season,” says Chris Engelsmann from European Sleeper. European Sleeper is partnering with the private Czech rail operation RegioJet, which will be providing the actual sleeper cars. Meanwhile, another company, Moon Light Express of Belgium, is also planning an overnight connection from Brussels to Berlin. It, too, is scheduled to kick off in spring 2022. Passengers will be able to choose between seating cars and sleeping compartments. “We’d like to have a dining car,” says the Dutchman, though it probably won’t be economically feasible. Will Travel be Possible This Summer With the EU’s Digital Green Certificate?

The EU Commission has just proposed what it calls a Digital Green Certificate to open up travel in the continent before summer. The idea is to facilitate safe free travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the information expected to be found on the proposed Digital Green Certificate include whether travelers have been vaccinated, whether they have COVID immunity already, or whether they’ve had a recent PCR test amongst. The proposition comes at a time when the EU vaccination scheme is being heavily criticized for slow roll-outs, export controls, and supply problems. EU opens a proposal to recognize the certificates issued by third countries provided that they reflect the same level of information and trustworthiness as their own. This is perfectly doable because many of the countries use EMA-approved vaccines. Once the EU moves into this recognition of certificates issued by third countries, inevitably they would have to revisit also the question of its guidance for non-essential travel from third countries. AndoluJet Announces New Service from Prague to Antalya

Effective the end of May 2021, AnadoluJet air carrier, a trademark of Turkish Airlines, plans to launch a new service between Prague and the popular holiday resort of Antalya. The route represents another connection to Turkey, available to passengers from Václav Havel Airport Prague throughout the 2021 summer season, provided they comply with all currently implemented conditions for travel. Summer Season Starts at Prague Airport

During the first week of the 2021 summer schedule, which came into effect at Václav Havel Airport Prague on Sunday, 28 March, passengers will be able to use direct air connections to approximately 35 destinations in 21 countries worldwide. The schedule features both currently operated destinations and services re-launched from Prague by airlines after a break. The list of offered routes should continue to increase following the resumption of operations in the coming months.    Passengers will be able to use direct flights to major European cities, such as Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt, which also serve as important transfer hubs to connecting routes to remote destinations. The resumed operations include, for example, the TAP Air Portugal route to Lisbon, which will now be available up to three times a week, or the Austrian Airlines route to Vienna, with a four-weekly frequency.
