Birell Grand Prix Prague Promises a High-Speed Race

Anyone who wants to enjoy a sporting performance combined with a spectacular experience in the center of the Czech capital should make time on the evening of 2 September when the 26th edition of the Birell Prague Grand Prix is to take place. A magical evening atmosphere, thousands of excited runners and fans, and a spectacular experience are what you can expect during the Birell Grand Prix Prague 2023. Female runners are to start in the adidas Women’s 5 km Race at 18:00, followed by the Birell 10k Race at 19:30. Both races are to start and finish at náměstí Republiky. Several leading distance runners have confirmed their participation, among them twenty-one-year-old Ethiopian, Tadese Worku. Worku is one of the few athletes to break the 27-minute barrier over 10km with a time of 26:56. Kenyan Alexander Mutiso, who dominated the Prague International Marathon with a record time this year (2:05:09), and Belgian 10km record holder Simon Debognies will be joining Tadese in the battle for the podium. Birell Prague Grand Prix 2024 to Take Place on September 7th

27th anniversary will mark this year’s Birell Prague Grand Prix on September 2nd. Thousands of runners and spectators of all ages, genders, and sizes will enjoy the magical atmosphere of Prague at sunset. The evening will start with a treat for all female runners – adidas Women’s Race 5km. The race begins at 18:00 in the center of Prague. Women can also sign up for the adidas Women’s Race 5km – pairs. The main event, Birell 10K Race, will occur the same day at 19:30 when runners can enjoy an equally fast course. Double the course, double the fun! It also includes a Team Run for women, men, and mixed teams. In addition to the aforementioned races, fans can look forward to a rich accompanying program. Prague Welcomes Spectacular New Winter Stadium

This September, Prague will see the official inauguration of a new winter stadium. Located in Opatov (Prague 11), the Ice Aréna Kateřinky is the latest addition to Czech winter stadiums. Ten have been built in the country since 2016. Ice Aréna Kateřinky consists of two ice rinks. One is intended for hockey and ice skating, while the other is for curling. Additionally, the stadium has an outdoor field where visitors can enjoy sports such as tennis. The stadium also has a restaurant. Although Ice Aréna Kateřinky still awaits its official opening, it is currently in its trial period. This means it can be used by the public on the weekends, as well as by ice hockey players upon reservation. The trial period commenced in late July when the stadium was used for the first time by the Czech under-18 national team as a part of the World Selects Invitational tournament. However, the building of Ice Aréna Kateřinky was not without its difficulties. It was a process that lasted for almost ten years. Russian Player Denied Entry for Prague WTA Event

The Czech Republic government approved a resolution at the end of June banning athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing in events on Czech territory. Czech police stopped a Russian tennis player from entering the country ahead of the WTA Prague Open tournament, organizers said on Friday, July 28. A new government resolution bans athletes from Russia or Belarus caused the event to scratch other competitors. The tournament’s organisers did not disclose the player’s name but three Russians were due to participate: Diana Maximovna Shnaider, Polina Kudermetova, and Erika Aleksandrovna Andreeva. The Prague Open starts on Monday, July 31, and was expected to see a handful of Russian and Belarusian players, including Evgeniya Rodina of Russia or Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, competing as neutrals, without any national flag or symbol. But the government approved a resolution at the end of June banning athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing in events on Czech territory, allowing police to revoke visas to those nationals. Tournament director Miroslav Maly said police had stopped one Prague Open participant from entering the country on Thursday and organizers informed other Russian and Belarusian nationals not to travel for the tournament after the incident. U19 Football Tournament CEE Cup to Start on Friday, July 28

The Brazilians and the English are slowly packing their bags to come over to Prague, the Czech teams are addressing the last question-marks in the composition of their teams. There is only one week left until the kick-off of the eleventh edition of the CEE Cup, the most important domestic youth tournament for under-19 footballers. The first match on Friday, July 28, at 15:00 at Sparta’s Strahov Training Centre will offer a spicy fight between the home team and West Ham United, with which it is connected by common ownership ties. All teams will stay at the Don Giovanni hotel on the border between Žižkov and Vinohrady, and in between matches they will train at the Sparta and Slavia training centres. “We don’t organize any accompanying program for them, but on their free day, they usually go to the city centre for dinner. Meetings with representatives of the various Embassies are also planned,” says the tournament director, Roberto De Blasio. Czech Republic’s Markéta Vondroušová Wins Wimbledon Women’s Title

Marketa Vondroušová has become the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title after beating sixth seed Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-4 in the final. The unseeded 24-year-old from the Czech Republic succeeded where so many have failed this tournament — she broke Jabeur’s serve, again and again. That’s what has made her Wimbledon champion, four years after she lost the French Open final as a 19-year-old. Going into the match the Tunisian had won 90 per cent of her service games. In the final, she only won 40 per cent (four out of 10). Vondroušová’s returning was just too much for Jabeur, who was aiming to become the first north African and first Arabic player to win a grand-slam title. Now, she joins a decorated group of Czech-born players to win Wimbledon: Martina Navratilova, Jana Novotna and Petra Kvitova. Markéta Vondroušová reached her first Wimbledon final after a scintillating performance against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, winning 6-3 6-3 in just an hour and 14 minutes. The 24-year-old Czech star is just the fifth unseeded woman in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon final and her exquisitely varied game was too much for Svitolina to handle. It was an inspired performance from Vondroušová, who rose to the occasion on Centre Court and got the better of her opponent with a potent mix of speed, spin and power to reach the second grand slam final of her career. Czechs Ban All Russian Athletes From Local Competitions

The Czech government said late on Wednesday it had banned all athletes representing Russia from taking part in local competitions as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued. The government said it banned “the participation of individual athletes and sports teams representing the Russian Federation in sports competitions and games organised on Czech soil”. At the same time, athletes and teams representing the Czech Republic must not take part in competitions held in Russia, it added in a statement. The decision was taken at the request of Czech sports associations. Previously, Czech ice hockey players playing in the Russian-based Kontinental Hockey League could not play for the Czech national team, for instance. But the current ban applies to all sports and all athletes competing under the Russian and Czech flags, respectively. There was no information as to whether the move also concerns Belarusian athletes. The Czech Olympic Committee said earlier this year it was against Russian and Belarusian athletes competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris under a neutral flag. Ice Hockey World Cup in Czechia: Final Composition of Groups Confirmed

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Host Organizing Committee have released the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship groups. Composition of groups confirmed The groups for Prague and Ostrava are based on the World Ranking taking into consideration organizational wishes by the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Organizing Committee. Host Czechia will play Canada – the defending champion, Finland, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Austria and Great Britain in Group A in Prague. The Magic of Quadball and the Prague Pegasus

Based on the popular fictional game of quidditch, as developed by J.K. Rowling for the world of Harry Potter, quadball is a real-life sport that has been gaining in popularity in the past decade. A mixture of rugby, dodgeball, and handball, it is a game that offers plenty of fun. Quadball originated in the United States, but has since spread all over the world, including the Czech Republic. The first Czech team was founded in Olomouc by a student who discovered the game while on Erasmus in Norway. Today, Czechia has quadball teams in cities including Brno, Plzeň, and Prague. But first, what are the rules of the game? Quadball is played in teams of seven players, all of whom are mounted on a (broom)stick throughout the match. Each team has three chasers, two beaters, a keeper, and a seeker. The goal of the chasers is to shoot a deflated volleyball through one of the three hoops set on each side of the pitch. Between the end of July and beginning of August (28.7 – 1.8), the Cee cup will host its 11th edition, featuring the usual Czech clubs of Sparta and Slavia as well as other notable teams from around the world. “We are glad that, despite the difficult economic situation, we will be able to organize the tournament again”, said Roberto De Blasio.
