Ester Ledecká edged Corinne Suter for her first win in a women’s World Cup super-G on Sunday, nearly three years after winning Olympic gold in the discipline. The Czech skier finished three-hundredths ahead of Suter, the World Cup super-G champion from Switzerland who won a downhill on the same slope Friday. Defending overall champion Federica Brignone came 0.35 behind in third, a day after sitting out the downhill following her crash in Friday’s race. The victory is just Ledecká’s second World Cup win on skis. With three top-two finishes this weekend, Suter is the big winner, up to the seventh place and 271 points in the overall standings, second in the super-G standings and joint top of the downhill standings. As this was the first super-G race of the season, following two cancellations in St Moritz, Ledecká leads the super-G standings. After celebrating her biggest successes in snowboarding, Ledecká stunned the world of Alpine skiing by scooping the Olympic super-G title in PyeongChang in 2018. However, Ledecká failed to replicate her achievement on the World Cup, getting only two top-10 finishes in 20 super-G starts, although she had three podium results in other disciplines, including a downhill victory in Lake Louise, Alberta, a year ago....
Petr Čech has not played since featuring for Arsenal in the Europa League final last May though was registered in Chelsea’s Premier League squad amid the coronavirus pandemic Petr Čech is set to play for Chelsea’s development squad against Tottenham in a Premier League 2 fixture at Kingsmeadow on Monday. This will not be a regular thing for Cech. He is only playing because regular goalkeeper, Lucas Bergstrom, played for Chelsea’s Under-18s on Saturday and the Blues do not want the Finn to play twice in such quick succession. Croatian goalkeeper Karlo Ziger could theoretically step in, but the 19-year-old is currently part of the first-team bubble, and Chelsea would rather he remain with Lampard’s squad than leave to play in the game and then have to be tested for COVID-19 before re-entering next week. Čech returned to Stamford Bridge as technical and performance director last June, just days after losing to the Blues in the Europa League final. The goalkeeper was playing for Arsenal then having previously spent 11 years in west London with Chelsea. Čech, who is younger than Caballero, has stayed fit by training with Lampard’s side and semi-regularly playing ice hockey with local club Guildford Phoenix. The...
The government met this morning to discuss further relaxation of the anti-epidemic measures. Ministers decided to take the country from level four to level three on the government’s PES system of coronavirus measures. Fans will not be allowed to return to Czech stadiums to watch sporting matches until the government decides to move to the second stage of the PES. Even then, the number of spectators “will be limited”. From December 3rd, amateur athletes will be able to play in indoor halls in a group of maximum ten people. Outdoor, two teams will be able to compete together. Amateur athletes need to wear a face mask indoors. Fitness centers and gyms need to respect the same rule as in the shops – one person per fifteen square meters. “Group fitness lessons are allowed for 9 people plus the instructor,” said Havlíček. Everyone needs to wear a face mask indoors. The exception will be only for professional athletes who are regularly tested. The limit on the number of people is one person per 15 square meters. Sports facilities such as tennis courts are also open again as long as games only involve two participants. PES System PES is one of the...

The top two divisions in Czech football will be allowed to restart after a month break caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Antonín Panenka – the man whose penalty won the 1976 European Championships for Czechoslovakia – is fighting for his life, according to Bohemians Praha 1905. The club tweeted: ‘Antonín Panenka was today in a serious condition transported to the ICU [Intensive Care Unit] to the hospital, where he is connected to the devices. Panenka, 71, led the Czechoslovak national team to their only international title after he lofted the decisive penalty past a surprised and sprawling German goalkeeper Sepp Maier in the shootout of the final. The shot – now called a Panenka – is a simple technique in which the player gently chips the ball down the center of the goal assuming the keeper will dive to the right or left. It was the country’s first – and so far only – major championship win. “I got the idea that if I delayed the kick and just lightly chipped it, a goalkeeper who dived to the corner of the goal could not jump back up into the air, and this became the basis of my philosophy. “I started slowly to test it and apply it in practice. As a side effect, I started to gain weight, because I was winning...
Peres Jepchirchir smashed the women-only race world record in the half marathon in Prague this morning. The 26-year-old Kenyan clocked 1:05:34 at the Prague 21.1KM, shattering the previous record of 1:06:11 set by Netsanet Gudeta of Ethiopia at the World Half Marathon Championships in 2018. Breaking away from the small field just 20 minutes into the race, Jepchirchir set out on a ravaging pace over the 16.5-lap course in Prague’s Letna Park, passing 10 kilometres in 30:32. She slowed over the waning laps but still finished well under the previous mark. “I thank God… I’m so excited… I’m satisfied with the result although I thought I could have run 64:50, but I thank God for what He has given me,” the pious Jepchirchir said after the race. She noted that it was difficult running alone after she dropped the pack and pacemakers. “It was difficult to run alone. If I could have had (good) pacemakers, I could have run 64.” This is Jepchirchir’s second world record over the distance. She clocked 1:05:06 in a mixed-race in Ras Al Khaimah in 2017, a record which stood for just under two months. The athletes were competing on an oval course around the...
A member of the Czech Republic backroom staff has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of their game with Scotland on Monday. The infected person has “immediately left the team hotel and entered quarantine”, the statement said, while the rest of the players and staff were re-tested and all returned negative results. The entire squad has been sent for retesting and they postponed the departure of their trip to Slovakia for Friday’s Nations League game. This month’s Nations League matches are the first competitive internationals in Europe since November, with subsequent games having been postponed or cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a huge blow for the Czech side ahead of their two games this weekend, but their game at Scotland won’t be at risk providing they have enough fit players. The staff member who tested positive has been put into quarantine, but UEFA released details earlier this week that suggested if they had 13 fit senior players, including two goalkeepers, then all games would have to go ahead. A statement from the Czech Republic said: “We can confirm one positive test from the group of the wider implementation team. “All test results are negative. As a result of today’s tests, the departure to Slovakia is...

Grand finale of the summer challenge Česko běží dál will take place on the first weekend in September. You can choose from several courses, including a family-run and there will also be a race for the little ones. The unique running challenge organized by RunCzech started in June and will end on Sunday, September 6. The challenge “Česko běží dál” (Czech Republic keeps on running) has been a unique way of getting runners all across the country to compete at various distances from 5K through 125K, not virtually but on real courses – a new kind of mixed reality. The main challenge was to run a total of 125 kilometers whenever you’re able, on any of the 5K FreeRun courses over a period of 90 days. People could also choose to run distances from 5 to 40 km. The foundation for this project was laid a few years ago when RunCzech created the FreeRun program – a community service project that aims to make running more accessible and more fun for more people. 90 running courses, each 5K long and certified by the Czech Athletics Federation were created to crisscross the entire country. All of them extremely comfortable for runners,...
Czech Republic International Tomas Souček has completed a permanent move to the English team West Ham United. The midfielder has been on loan at the London club from Slavia Prague since January. The 25-year-old has now signed a permanent four-year contract and will remain with the Hammers, having come through the Slavia youth academy. Souček told the Slavia Prague website: “Of course, I have mixed feelings. I am leaving Slavia where I grew up and played for my entire career. “But I am leaving for Premier League, my dream competition, so, there is sad news about leaving Slavia compensated by the good news that we managed to save West Ham from relegation. “I can feel that I have made a good choice, that I can move forward now. And I am looking forward to the following years. I will support Slavia forever, even though I will be wearing a different shirt.” He recently scored his first goal for West Ham before adding two more to help the team avoid relegation from the Premier League. Souček continued: “I must be satisfied with the last half a year, I have heard a lot about how January transfers aren’t the easiest choice and...
