Prague Metro Line D Moves Ahead - Second Phase Preparation Starts

Prague Morning

Preparatory work for the second phase of Prague Metro Line D has already started, with full construction set to begin in the second half of June.

The new metro line could begin operating in around six years. The opening timeline depends on the pace of preparations and the completion of procurement processes.

The initial operational segment may run either between Pankrác and Nové Dvory or extend further to Písnice.

The first section of Line D, connecting Pankrác and Olbrachtova, is already largely structurally complete. Concrete works are still being finalized inside the stations as part of finishing construction phases.

Construction on this first segment began in 2022. Progress on the extension toward Písnice was delayed due to repeated complaints filed with the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition regarding procurement procedures.

The main construction site will be located in Písnice near the Kunratická spojka, with work planned to proceed from the south. The preferred scenario is to open the entire section between Pankrác and Písnice at once. If that proves unfeasible, operations would initially start only between Pankrác and Nové Dvory.

Technical systems such as tracks, electrical infrastructure, ventilation and safety equipment are planned to be installed across both sections simultaneously.

At Olbrachtova station, workers are completing the inner concrete layer of the tunnel. The station platform has already been poured.

At the future Pankrác D station excavation is nearing completion. Work on insulation and secondary structural layers is expected to begin during the summer. Final completion of the section will depend on progress in the following construction phase.

Line D is planned to link Písnice with Náměstí Míru, reducing transport pressure in the southern part of Prague. The original plan expected the Pankrác to Písnice segment to open in 2029, but delays caused by procurement disputes pushed the timeline to 2032.

Future extensions will continue toward Náměstí Míru, with longer-term plans reaching Náměstí Republiky.

City officials are also reviewing station naming along the new line. The municipal naming commission has recommended changes to several working names. Proposed updates include Nusle instead of Náměstí Bratří Synků, Ryšánka instead of Olbrachtova, Tempo instead of Nové Dvory, and Sídliště Písnice instead of Písnice.

Names such as Libuš, Nemocnice Krč, Nádraží Krč, Pankrác and Náměstí Míru are expected to remain unchanged. The final southern terminus, currently referred to as Depo Písnice, is still under review.
