We’ve dug out halal restaurants and shops in Prague that are not only known for their good quality food but are wallet-friendly at the same time. What is halal? Halal translates to ‘lawful’ or ‘permitted’ in Arabic and is used to describe things that adhere to Islamic law, as defined in the Qur’an. The term can be applied to anything but is most commonly used in reference to food that is permissible to eat, such as meat. According to the Halal Food Authority, to make meat halal or permissible, an animal or poultry is slaughtered in a ritual known as “Zabihah”. The ritual requires that the animal is healthy at the time of slaughter. The jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe should also be severed by a razor-sharp knife in a single swipe so as to “incur the least amount of pain as possible”. All blood must be fully drained from the carcass and a prayer must also be said during the slaughter. NABU Sandwich A café specializes in the oriental flavors of the Tunisian spirit and culture. Czech lawmakers have rejected a proposed bill to reduce dependency on food imports by imposing a quota of locally-produced food to be sold in supermarkets. Lawmakers in the upper house, or the Senate, dismissed the bill last month. It would have required that the percentage of Czech food sold in stores bigger than 400 sq. meters would be a minimum of 55% in 2022 and rise to at least 73% in 2028. The lower house had originally approved the controversial requirement in January but on Tuesday accepted the upper house’s veto. The bill was drafted by the opposition populist Freedom and Direct Democracy party, which had pushed it through the lower house with the help from the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Andrej Babis and the opposition Communists. One of the Czech Republic’s largest food producers is Agrofert, a conglomerate that includes farming, chemicals, food processing, and media firms that was owned by Babis until he placed it into trust funds in 2017. Proponents of the bill argued that the pandemic showed it’s important for the country to be self-sufficient in food production and the move would boost local agriculture, applying to 120 foods, including pork, beef, milk, honey, and...

Everli is in collaboration with various big-name supermarkets, such as Albert, Billa, Kaufland, Globus and Tesco. The company promises to deliver customers’ purchases to their doorsteps within an hour of their initial orders. Moreover, Everli aims to help retailers transition to an online environment. Last year, the company’s sales almost reached $130 million, with its international branches making up 20% of the orders. “We are proud to have played a role in helping many people during these difficult times, but we are only getting started, as this industry will never be the same again. The shift to online delivery is not disappearing, and expectations on all sides are only increasing. We have built a model which we believe offers unparalleled value to customers even in less urban areas. Retailers, on the one hand, reach a completely new consumer base,” said Federico Sargenti, Everli’s CEO. Tiffins by Nebu is a new restaurant that serves modern Indian cuisine. Tiffins can be found in Makro Stodulky, and their first opening for takeaways took place this past Sunday on the 28th March. Tiffins is operated by the same people from the Nebu restaurant, an Asian/Indian fusion restaurant founded by Sunil. Their menu boasts a diverse array of dishes, and they even serve pizzas and tacos. Customers can order online or pick up their order from Tiffin’s HQ. Tiffins is accessible on Bolt Food as well, if you want a quick grab and taste at their delicacies. You can also order their food by clicking here. Tiffins was conceptualized by Nebu-owner Sunil, a businessman passionate about food, fashion, and art. Sunil moved to a house in Nebušice, which is where ‘Nebu’ comes from and decided to open his own restaurant after missing the taste of high-quality Asian and Indian food, that he felt he just couldn’t really find here in Prague. “The restaurant was an impulsive decision as I’m a big-time foodie and restaurants are a passion”, he says. Tiffin’s menu reflects Sunil’s wish to share his culture’s cuisine here in Prague, with menu items like the classic Masala, Biriyani,...
The most popular alcoholic beverage in the Czech Republic is wine, beer comes in second place. According to a study by Focus agency for the wine-growers’ association Vinařský fond, 73 percent of Czech adults consume wine, compared to 65% who indulge in beer. The survey was conducted in August and September last year with more than 1,200 respondents over the age of eighteen. With regard to overall volume, ie in terms of the amount consumed, however, beer is still in the first place. “The survey showed that wine consumers tend to be patriotic. Almost three-fifths prefer Moravian and Czech wines mainly because of the taste and in part because they wish to support domestic production,” said Jaroslav Machovec, director of Vinařský fond. Most Czechs who drink wine prefer the whites (54%) – particularly semi-dry ones – by far more popular than the red (15%) or rosé (6%) varieties. A quarter of them declared not having any specific preference. Two-thirds of wine consumers buy wine from retail outlets, but according to the survey, more and more people buy it in wine shops or directly from winemakers. Only five percent of wine drinkers buy the beverage online. Compared to the previous survey,...

Keep fruit and vegetables fresh for up to 2x longer than before. Rohlik has started to cooperate with the Californian company Apeel, which has set itself the goal of keeping fruit & vegetables fresh for up to twice as long – by using plant-based ingredients. Apeel’s plant-based protection creates an edible “peel” that can be applied to freshly picked produce such as oranges. The edible layer surrounds the fruit and serves to keep the moisture inside, while the oxygen that removes that moisture remains outside. Apeel’s protective extra peel slows the water loss and oxidation that causes produce to go bad. “A respectful approach to the environment is important to us. Therefore, for Rohlik Group, Apeel means two things: firstly, we manage to keep fruit & vegetables fresher for longer, and secondly, we are once again helping to avoid food waste” commented Olin Novák, Group CCO. “We’re thrilled to have partners like Rohlik who recognize that giving their customers more time to enjoy produce isn’t just good for the planet, it’s good for business,” said James Rogers, CEO of Apeel, who continues, “Apeel’s plant-based protection helps produce last two times longer, which means Rohlik’s customers have access to high-quality produce...
