On September 23, the Fall Equinox will take place and Katarze organizers decided to celebrate this date with a full day/night event – one will be the festivity in front of the Gabriel Loci monastery. After this, the second part of the event will take place in the crypt below the church. It is up to you if you decide to celebrate with us during the daylight, night, or both! You can explore a course of mundane existence through music and be ready to let go. Escape the everyday routine, reconnect with your senses and enjoy the fall resurrection. The mind behind this event is Katarze, a name that comes from the Greek word Katharsis, which means purification, cleansing, or clarification. The aim is to share love, inspiration, and respect for music, leading to the purification of emotions through art or the change in feelings to renewal and restoration. The goal is to confront emotions such as pity and fear, creating an atmosphere and an area where the attendees can forget about their burdens and leave with feeling inspired and rejoiced by creativity and the heightening of all senses. The Lunchmeat Festival returns with its Autumn program from September 25th – 30th. Dedicated to electronica with an emphasis on visual and musical artists in collaboration, Lunchmeat brings the highest level of experimental digital artists collaborating with musicians/producers/DJs annually. Lunchmeat Festival includes a symposium, and it is spread out in venues around Prague, for a most local flavor. While this is an international festival with mostly multi-nationality collaborations, this year’s program is de-emphasizing headliners, for a more helpful promotion and support of the local artist community. The musical programming has been refined for this year’s festival, and that said, some visiting artists are contributing to a noticeable shift to a dreamier side, for instance Marina Herlop from Catalonia, as a classically-trained, experimental pianist and vocalist. Her 2022 album “Pripyat” is refreshing (singing in an imagined language); her voice is influenced by Bjorn, Laurie Anderson, and possibly even the Bulgarian Woman’s Choir, but uniquely as a solo project (thanks to vocal manipulation/digital production), she makes a wondrous sea of dreams in sound. Another classically-trained pianist, Corin, takes this approach to an edgier zone with her project Lux Aeterna (an AV live performance). Corin is described as music for the end of...

For the upcoming season, the...
In the last few years of the Cold War, from 1985 to 1989, an inspired young man decided to prove to the world that Europe, despite the political differences that kept it divided in two, was and remains one entity. With a small camera that he keeps close to his heart, Constantin Pittas will scan the then-divided Europe, capturing countless hundreds of films the true face of the European citizen. It records raw emotions of everyday people in Western and Eastern countries, as they are reflected through their gaze, eventually managing to record history itself. The fall of the Berlin Wall will find him to be a witness in the city of Berlin and there, he will make the mindless decision to drop his project and leave the material of the photographs for a whole 25 years in a storage room. Today, in Prague, we have the unique opportunity to see history in its human form unfolding before our eyes, and during this troubled period we live, to ask ourselves again: Is Europe, after all, a unique entity? Looking at some of the photos, 1989 seems surprisingly long ago. And it must seem even more so for the young generation...
“In the garden of the Excelsior that evening, you could hear the breath of the extremely attentive spectators, you felt a thrill running through the audience”. These words, written by the young Michelangelo Antonioni as a critic at the second Venice Film Festival, in 1934, give us a hint of the tremendous impact of Extase (Ecstasy), written and directed by Prague-born director Gustav Machatý, during that historic premiere. Dubbed a “pornographic film” by the Osservatore Romano (the daily newspaper of Vatican City State), it even aroused Mussolini’s attention, to the extent that Il Duce actually requested a private screening. Despite the Pope’s attempts to block it, it was screened on 7 August 1934 and the Czechoslovak director was rewarded with the Venice City Cup. According to a public survey, Extase was considered the best foreign film and Machatý the best director. A scandalous film, now considered a turning point in the direction of international cinema, which also marked the beginning of the career of the leading lady, Hedy Lamarr, later launched in Hollywood under the label of “the most beautiful woman in the world”. Lamarr said the director tricked her into the nude scenes. Here’s how the “tricking” happened, as recounted...

Due to huge audience demand for the Saturday performance of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS in Concert, organizers are adding a second date on Friday 22nd March at 7.30 pm. JV Classics presents the 2nd part of the epic fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The spectacular screening, accompanied by 230 members of a symphony orchestra, choirs and foreign soloists, will take place twice, on Friday 22 March, and Saturday 23 March 2024 in the modern concert hall O2 Universum Prague. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, based on the book by J. R. R. Tolkien, premiered in the Czech Republic on 16 January 2003. Although more than 20 years have passed since its release, this ground-breaking work has lost a bit of its huge popularity. On the contrary, more and more new generations continue to admire its excellence. The music for the trilogy was composed by the celebrated composer Howard Shore: “The large scale of the music requires a symphony orchestra, a mixed choir, a boys’ choir and instrumental and vocal soloists singing in Tolkien’s literary languages, but of course also in English,” says the author. The music of The Lord...

Babak Jalali’s American film Fremont wowed audiences at the Sundance Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it took home the Crystal Globe for Best Director. The tender comedy follows the life of a young girl, Dunia, who works in a fortune cookie factory and decides to chase her own luck by hiding a daring message in one of the cookies. The main role of the quirky Dunia is played by debutant actress Anaita Wali Zada, alongside Jeremy Allen White, known to viewers from the popular kitchen nightmare series The Bear. Jalali’s distinctive humour and charming atmosphere have earned the film rave reviews, which are not afraid to compare the British director with Iranian roots to the big names of world cinema. Artforum magazine describes the film as “an extraordinary comedy with a calm detachment reminiscent of Kaurismäki and Jarmusch,” while Harper’s Bazaar calls it “an ode to the beauty and restless appeal of human connection.” The film will be released by Aerofilms on September 14. The right to a better life Jalali’s goal was to make a story that could easily slide into a dark social drama as a sweet, light comedy. “Showing humor in grim...
