The intensive care unit in Prague’s General University Hospital was half empty this week. On Tuesday the Czech government relaxed some of the country’s coronavirus restrictions. Unlike doctors at overburdened hospitals in other European countries, Czechs have not been forced to make decisions on who gets the best care. Five of the General University Hospital’s intensive care beds were still unoccupied on Tuesday. The Czech government has agreed to relax some restrictions imposed to contain the epidemic. Industry and trade minister Karel Havlicek said that starting Tuesday, people would not have to wear a mandatory facemask for outdoor individual sports activities, such as jogging or riding a bicycle. As of Thursday, more stores will be allowed to reopen, including hobby markets and businesses selling construction materials and bicycles. The government has also approved a proposal to cancel the ban on Czechs traveling abroad, starting on 14 April. Havlicek said people will have a chance to travel to foreign countries for business trips, visiting relatives, or for medical reasons. On returning, they will have to be quarantined for two weeks. Bertram Škařupa, a Czech high school student, created a website to show how social distancing is important in consideration of virus spread. He created a simple simulation that illustrates the spread of a virus in different circumstances. “I worked on this project mainly for people who are tired of watching complicated charts or statistics. The simulation was also understood by my eight-year-old brother,” says the young programmer. The graph illustrates the progress of the virus spread. When a virus has no barriers, it spreads exponentially. That means that a lot of people get ill fast and then get better fast. However, when growth is exponential it quickly exceeds the healthcare capacity (represented by the black line). The COVID19CZ initiative is currently bringing out a new project which should push the country’s smart quarantine even further. We’re talking about a new eRouška application, which the Ministry of Health has taken under its patronage and which should facilitate an easier, faster, and more effective process of looking up people who are at high risk of infection due to contact with an infected person. The eRouška application is available for operating systems Android (download here) and iOS (it should be released for iPhone in the next few upcoming hours/days) and it’s based on the Bluetooth technology. Once the users give their permission to the app, phones with activated Bluetooth service can let one another know when they meet. The eRouška application then saves anonymized data into the owner’s phone about mobile devices with the same application which were recently in its vicinity. If a user’s coronavirus test comes back positive, the phone data can then be used to send anonymized identification numbers of other applications to health officers during an epidemiologic investigation. Nudists who sunbathed without protective face masks in the Czech Republic have been reprimanded by police and warned that clothes may be optional but masks are not. More than a hundred people, including nudists, descended on the Czech spa town of Lázně Bohdaneč to enjoy the good weather.
