Since 1971, we have been sitting on top of the tree of the European ranking for the foamy beverage consumption. The Czech Beer and Malt Association (CSPS) drew attention to this fact during yesterday’s International Beer Day. “With 141 liters per capita, Czechs are at the top of the pan-European beer consumption chart. We came to the forefront in 1971 with a consumption of 160 liters; the highest consumption of beer (167 liters) was registered in 1992,” says Martina Ferancová, Executive Director of ČSPS. Last year was a record for breweries. The total production of Czech beer reached 21.3 million hectoliters. Czech breweries produced a record 21.3 million hectoliters of beer last year, an increase of 4.7 percent on 2017. Drought continued in all areas of the Czech Republic as soil drought has spread and currently affects three-quarters of the country, according to a statement released by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) on Thursday. The previous week was characterized by a higher temperature, which intensified mainly the evaporation from the soil and watercourses. Statistics from the institution showed that it was four degrees Celsius warmer than the average for the period, but only about a third of the normal amount of rain fell. Drought spread to 75 percent of the country’s territory from 64 percent in the previous week, as shown by drying and dying of vegetation. According to the institute, conifers are the most affected species. Some wildwood species, such as birch, hazel, sycamore, cherry, hornbeam, start to turn yellow prematurely. Czech scientists placed 26th in the prestigious Global Nature Index 2018, ranking closely alongside Finland and Norway. The renowned Global Nature Index is created by Nature magazine and the final ranking is based on articles published in 82 selected science journals worldwide. The Czech Republic placed 26th with 191.1 points, which is roughly at the same level as Finland in 25th and Norway in 27th. The overall placement of the Czech Republic is remarkable as it is not as big as Poland which received 224.6 points. The strongest Czech institution in basic research is the Academy of Sciences with 84.1 points, which made the 172nd place in the ranking. The number of Czech scientific papers that have the potential to rewrite textbooks and the state of human knowledge is also more than twice as high as in Hungary (38th). Another V4 country, Slovakia, did not make it into the top 50. “The Czech institutions simply cannot be ignored by the world rankings. The Czech Republic is the most sustainable country in Central and Eastern Europe, according to the 2019 Sustainable Development Report, published by the United Nations together with the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). Countries in the report were evaluated on 17 key criteria for sustainable development, including eliminating poverty and hunger, establishing quality education, providing access to clean water and sanitation, promoting responsible consumption and production, having access to a decent workplace and contributing to the economic growth. Four years after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, no country is on track to meet all the goals. Overall, emerging Europe’s countries obtain their best performance when it comes to erasing poverty and promoting affordable and clean energy. But compared to other regions, when it comes to the rule of law, peace, justice and strong institutions, CEE lags behind, due to relatively high perceived corruption in some countries, poor freedom of speech or insecurity. Czech customs officers found five undocumented foreigners claiming to have come from Afghanistan in a North Macedonian lorry during a regular check of lorries in Brno-Slatina on Thursday. The Czech government on July 8 gave preliminary approval for Elektrárna Dukovany II, a subsidiary of utility ČEZ, to build at least one new nuclear power unit in the country, along with as many as three more at existing nuclear power plants at Dukovany and Temelín. The government in its resolution published Monday said it would provide the utility with loan guarantees to help secure financing for any new reactors. ČEZ is 70% owned by the Czech government. Reports said construction of any new units is years away, though equipment and technology suppliers could be chosen within the next five years. Expectations are that at least one 1,200-MW reactor would be built at Dukovany by 2035 to replace four existing units that are scheduled to be shut down between 2035 and 2037. New capacity at Temelín would be built at a later date. At least three Russian airlines have canceled most of their Tuesday flights to the Czech Republic over what they said was the country’s decision to revoke flight permissions to and from Prague. The flagship carrier Aeroflot and Ural Airlines are the only Russian airlines that perform direct flights to and from Prague. Czech Airlines performs return flights to and from Moscow twice a day. “Because of the decision by the Czech Republic’s aviation authorities to revoke earlier issued permits for Moscow-Prague-Moscow flights, Aeroflot has to cancel following flights: SU2010/2011, SU2014/2015, SU2016/2017 and SU2018/2019, scheduled for 2 July”, the airline said in a statement. At the same time, flights SU2012/2013 and SU2024/2025 will be carried out as scheduled, according to Aeroflot. The heat wave starts after Sunday when a powerful upper ridge develops over Europe. Models are trending with very extreme temperature anomaly for the near-surface layers, locally reaching 12-16 °C above normal for late June. On Thursday, the heat wave would eventually peak over Germany with local temperatures ever approaching 40 °C while on Friday, a cold front might push from the west and finish the heat wave, but the excessive heat would then push towards the Alpine region and Poland / Czech Republic as well. Extreme heat could develop over some areas, locally reaching 35-40 °C in the afternoons next week. Such anomalous temperatures would likely break June records in some areas. The consumption of medicinal cannabis in the Czech Republic continued to grow in the past years, according to information at a symposium held here Monday. The symposium was organized by the Drug Policy Department of the Office of the Government in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the State Institute for Drug Control. By the end of May this year, cannabis was prescribed at least once and issued to 665 patients in the country. The number of registered doctors for cannabis prescription has also multiplied, and almost 100 are currently prescribed for medicinal cannabis. The cites of Prague and Ostrava have been chosen to host the 2024 World Ice Hockey Championships. In April, the transport sector released a new program for users of prepaid online tickets.
