Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová rejoiced Thursday after a man who allegedly attacked her with a knife in 2016 was taken into custody but her spokesman said the case was not yet over. Zuzana Buresova, a spokesperson for the county court in the city of Prostějov. Buresova declined to give any further details. The public Czech Television said the man was a 54-year-old drug addict, adding Kvitová had identified him as the attacker before traveling to Paris to play at the French Open starting on Sunday. After the attack in her home in Prostějov in December 2016, Kvitová had surgery on injuries to her playing left hand. It took her more than five months to recover. Despite grim forecasts by doctors, who even warned she might lose her fingers, the 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion returned to the sport in time for the 2017 French Open. Kvitova sank from 11th in the world when the crime occurred to 29th at the turn of 2017 and 2018, but she has since climbed back into the top ten, also owing to back-to-back wins at Prague and Madrid at the turn of April and May. This congenial American decided to move to Prague to start his career many years ago and now runs a new HR concept called GoodCall. What was his motivation to leave the US and establish a life and business in the Czech Republic? The first thing that we noticed when we came into their offices was the relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was smiling although nobody knew us. In a moment, we understood this is the place where all sorts of people can cooperate together. Blake, what brought you to the Czech Rep.? My great grandmother was Czech so I always had some connection with the Czech Republic. I chose Prague because it was still raw. There was something to be completed here. I felt there is a challenge. Recruitment in the Czech Republic is still a market that has a lot to develop. But one of the original reasons I came here was the idea that people in America live to work. But you (Czech people) work to live. Do you remember what was the hardest part for you in regards to business? We are a startup. We’ve gone through numerous challenges. One was moving from a tiny startup to, let’s say, a midsize...

A photo of an old Russian missile in a server room just caused a massive Reddit freak out. Redditor WhySoSadCZ posted a photo of “some kind of explosive lying on the floor” on Monday in the subreddit r/WhatisThisThing. They claimed that they were working on the air conditioning for a small office building in the Czech Republic when they found a whole missile in the office’s server room. They claimed that the server room was untouched for two months and that they had to break in to fix the AC. In the final update, they say that they got their phone back after going through a police investigation. The Redditor claims that the local bomb squad wasn’t authorized to work with the missile, so it was taken to a “nearby military area” where it would be detonated. u/WhySoSadCZ said they didn’t have any information about how the missile ended up in a locked server room for two months, but that “there is a strict embargo about it.” The local news in the Czech Republic even covered the story — and said it was fake. According to Lupa.cz, the police spokesperson for the Czech Presidency claims that there was no bomb squad-led detonation. “We do not...
The Czech supreme court has ruled that two gay partners should be legally recognized as the fathers of a surrogate child. The child was born a few months ago to a surrogate mother in California through artificial insemination. The California authorities subsequently recognized both Czechs as the newborn’s parents. The judges ruled that the biological link between a parent and a child should not be the only determining element, maintaining parental responsibility may have a greater role in the recognition of the parenthood legal status. It is the first time that, in the history of Czech law, a court recognizes two fathers and the necessity of safeguarding the needs of the child. A ruling recognizing parenthood of both men was brought by the Supreme Court on May 2. With the verdict, the lawyer turned to the Czech authorities to issue the birth certificate. Roughly three-quarters of Czechs agree with the possibility to conclude marriage irrespective of sexual orientation and three-fifths are for the gay and lesbian couples adopting children from institutes, according to a poll conducted by the Median agency. Meanwhile, 61 percent believe same-sex couples should be able to adopt children, where just two years ago respondents had been evenly split.

If motorists have been seeing a lot of yellow dust on their cars and aren’t sure exactly what it is, they may want to pay attention what their intuition suggests. In short, this being the time in which flowers are blooming, pollen is saturating the air and landing on the first surface that’s come to. Since few days, Czechs are fighting against small yellow grains. According to allergologists it comes from spruce and pine trees. According to Ondřej Rybníček from the Faculty Hospital in Brno, this year the amount of pollen is higher than in previous years. “Hot weather and strong wind can cause a high concentration of pollen in the air. Everything blossomed suddenly,” he explained. Pine trees produce large amounts of pollen each spring in order to ensure that the seeds get fertilized and the species can survive. You may not know this, but pine trees have both male and female pine cones. The male cones are usually smaller and often not even noticed, but the pollen that they produce is. So, if your car is yellow, blame… a male! Author: red
