Rekola, a bike-sharing company that offers its service not only in Prague, but also in seven other Czech cities, has started an initiative of sharing snow gliders in Prague, Brno, and Olomouc. Because of the heavy snowfall in recent days, parts of the Czech Republic are covered in snow. This explains the many cross-country skiers and tobogganers sighted out, especially in Prague. Where can you find one of these gliders? Rekola has set them up on popular hills such as Letná, Petřín, Vítkov, Riegrovy sady and Stromovka. That’s just in Prague. On the other hand, if you live in Brno, for example, you can find these gliders under Špilberk Castle, and there are some situated at the Planetarium on Kraví Hora, as well. Lastly, residents of Olomouc will find them in the Little Prince park. The gliders can be rented on Rekola’s mobile application. All you need to do is pay 10 CZK to use them for 30 minutes. Each glider is marked with a number that you enter on the application. When you’re finished using it, you lock the glider back to the designated place and take a picture of it. “At the end of the ride, users have...

Article by Brandes Gress, teacher at Cherry Tree, English speaking preschool in the heart of Vinohrady. 5. Dětské hřiště pod Rapidem – Nad Primaskou 2468/1A, 100 00 Praha 10-Vinohrady Nestled in the back of Vinohrady between the Strašnická metro stop and the University Hospital, lies a beautiful playground equipped with small built-in trampolines, an enclosed sandbox, and a play structure. This park’s most prominent feature is the rubberized surface that has been designed to resemble the solar system. This is not only fun, but also educational, plus it gives the park a softer surface for when the astronauts crash-land. Although this park has fencing around the sandbox, it is not fully enclosed which can make it difficult to keep children in, and dogs out. Another noteworthy feature (or lack thereof) is this park does not have a public toilet, which could be difficult for children who are potty-training or prefer privacy. 4. Dětské hřiště Folimanka – Park Folimanka, Vinohrady, 120 00 Praha 2 This playground sits at the base of Folimanka shaded by trees and the surrounding buildings. It is completely enclosed giving parents with multiple children (or really fast ones) peace of mind. The sandbox has a selection...
Article written by Dr. Cindy Gause-Vega, Elementary Principal at International School of Prague. Studies of early childhood education show that strong programs increase a child’s cognitive and social-emotional development, as well as nurturing rich language and numeracy skills. There are different types of early childhood programs based on different teaching philosophies. Many early childhood centers are primarily daycare programs in which children are well cared for and are engaged in free, unstructured play. Some early childhood programs follow well-known educational philosophies and educators are trained in the pedagogies of these approaches. Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia-inspired are the most well known. Montessori and Waldorf preschools are often accredited by official organizations. Reggio-inspired preschool programs are informed by the pedagogy and philosophy of the Reggio Emilia approach while also reflecting the cultural context of each location. Preschools are likely to focus on a particular philosophy in how they describe themselves in promotional materials and in school tours. While it’s important to know what the school’s educational philosophy is and whether this is a good fit for your child, it is also important to know that many preschool programs do not need any accreditation to use the names of those educational methods. Using...
During the Soviet occupation of then Czechoslovakia, Ivana Nohel was seven-years-old when she and her family left Prague and emigrated overseas to settle in Canada. Years later, though relatively unknown in the Czech Republic, Nohel finds herself a well-established and successful designer whose creations can be found in Buckingham Palace. One of her most impressive career accolades is seeing her designs worn by Queen Elizabeth II. Some of the Queen’s frequently worn headscarves are pieces designed by the Czech-born Nohel. The Queen has been spotted sporting a silk headscarf that is olive green in color and depicts vintage-looking rocking horses. This is one of several Ivana Nohel Studio designs that can be bought on her website and in the Buckingham Palace souvenir shop. Before having her designs worn by British royalty, Nohel was instrumental in the production of Disney princess dolls like Cinderella. After working in toy design for companies like Hasbro, Nohel earned a job with the Walt Disney Company Europe division and became the head of the consumer products design team. During her time in the toy development department she would design different aspects of Disney princess dolls like dresses, purses, and all sorts of other accompanying accessories....

It is not a replacement for summer 2021, but a unique get-together in a gaming environment,” explains Rock for People (RfP) festival director Michal Thomes. “Those who know the Festivalpark in Hradec Králové can look forward to well-known places, from hangars to the runway, stages or even RfP merch to buy. You can dance,...
Prague is undoubtedly a city with a very rich historical background. Simultaneously, it also has a wonderful and vibrant artistic and cultural scene. The city’s general attractiveness has been a magnet for many world-renowned artists and musicians to come flocking and to use the city’s spots and impressive facilities. Prague’s metros, club scenes, and diverse aesthetically-pleasing spots have been shot on video and utilized by many different household names over the past decades. Here are some noteworthy examples: Radiohead, the famous British rock-band hailing from the 1980s, used Prague’s metro announcement, in the opening of their song A Reminder, released in 1998. The song comes from their ‘EP Airbag/How Am I Driving?’, and was reportedly recorded from Jiřího z Poděbrad. Additionally, their main vocalist Thom Yorke, shot a short film partly in Prague, while riding an underground train. The film is available on Netflix, featuring three of Yorke’s songs from a new album named ANIMA, and was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. On top of that, the wildly successful and iconic Rihanna, also shot two music videos in Prague. Her single Don’t Stop the Music was filmed in Radost Fx. On the other hand, her single Shut up...
In the last 10 years, the number of foreigners living in the Czech Republic with permanent residence permits has increased to more than 590 000. Every foreign non-EU national submitting the application has to pass the Czech language exam. Last year, officials wanted to raise the exam language difficulty from A1 to A2 level. Demand to learn Czech is getting higher every year and therefore more unique ways to learn Czech are arising too. In 2019, the Ministry of the Interior stated plans for 2021: “A priority is also to provide measurements to ensure that every applicant for a permanent residence permit will pass Czech language exam at A2 level.” Plans to raise the standards of the Exam in The Czech Language for Permanent Residence to A2 level for non-EU applicants would certainly increase the demand for Czech language courses and learning tools. The reason for the change to A2 level stated by the Ministry of Education was that the A1 level is insufficient for conducting a conversation. Right now, it is still enough for expats to have A1 level of the Czech language in order to apply for a permanent residence permit according to the official website. Will this...

Photo booths, usually found at airports, train stations, and the odd mall here and there, have been seeing a social resurgence, laying claim to being the original orchestrator of self-portraiture in photographic form, aka: the vintage selfie. 2007: a project was started to bring the fifties and sixties back to life on a global scale. Fotoautomat grew from a simple idea to restore and maintain the original black and white photo booths in a world that had forgotten, but since embraced the quality and nostalgia of these classic photographs. These photo booths are distinctly retro-looking, totally analog, and appear in only four cities around the world: Paris, Arles, Nantes, and now… Prague! The first one materialized in the lobby of the Palais de Tokyo in 2007, rescued from obscurity by retronaut Eddy Bourgeois, the enigmatic figure behind Fotoautomat. Since 2007, FotoAutomat has been restoring and putting into operation analog photo booths for black-and-white photographs. They produce a strip of four unique pictures for 70 CZK that are developed in the booth while you wait. They’re are equipped with a privacy curtain. Nowadays, there are less than 50 analog photo booths worldwide. You can find FotoAutomat at Cafe Jedna (now Cafe Selektor)...
