Primark retail chain will open its first store on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street. The Irish apparel brand is set to open its doors next May. The 4,700 sqm store is likely to attract not just crowds of tourists to the top of the iconic square, but many Czechs as well who were previously willing to travel to Dresden just to see what deals the price-conscious store had to offer. But there is something more. Primark decided to expand to Brno and open a second store in the Olympia shopping center in 2022. The new store spans 3,600 square meters. The first edition of Comic-Con Prague was attended by over 23,000 visitors. The organizers said the event was “a great success that exceeded all expectations” and are already working on the next edition, which is to take place from February 12 to February 14 in 2021. The Guardian on Saturday published a list of the “10 coolest neighborhoods in Europe”. Together with Järntorget/Långgatorna in Goteborg, the University District in Brussels, El Cabanyal in Valencia, and Neukölln in Berlin, the British newspaper mentioned Prague’s Holešovice. “Holešovice was for a long time seen as a bleak district with little to offer locals, let alone visitors. Its impressive resurgence over the past decade or so has been largely thanks to creative and commercial entrepreneurs taking advantage of low rents and empty spaces – apartment blocks, factories – to create a vibrant infrastructure of galleries, shops, cafes, clubs, and bars. Free Citymove app calculates the best route, enables different means of transport to be booked and helps to find parking spaces in Prague. The app – developed by ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab – finds and compares various modes of transport – walking, bike-sharing, taxi, and public transport. The app also enables to book and pay for the ride right from the app. And if you decide to go by car, Citymove enables paying for on-street parking as well. Seven artists were in the running to represent the Czech Republic in Rotterdam. The winner was decided by 50/50 jury and online/public voting. Tonight they announced the results and the official representative for the Czech Republic. Benny Cristo has won Eurovision Song CZ 2020 and will represent the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam with the song “Kemama”. He will perform in the first half of semi-final two in Ahoy Arena on Thursday 14 May. The Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest The Czech Republic debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 with the song “Malá Duma” by Kálas, coming last in the semifinal with 1 point. They’ve competed a total of 8 times in the contest, first qualifying for the final in 2016 with “I Stand” by Gabriela Gunčíková, finishing 25th. Things also improved once the Czech Republic introduced their online national final Eurovision Song CZ. Mikolas Josef took the country to the top six in 2018, while Lake Malawi secured a solid eleventh place finish in 2019. Saint Patrick’s Day is a celebration in honor of the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. The day of celebration marks the day of Saint Patrick’s death, originally the event was meant to celebrate the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It has evolved into a mostly cultural celebration of Irish heritage marked with a day of drinking, green clothing, and Irish-themed parades. Large-scale St Patrick’s day celebrations have become a tradition in many cities around the world, but have only gained popularity in Prague in recent years. The eighth annual Dry February, aimed at highlighting the dangers of excessive drinking, begins today in the Czech Republic. The campaign aimed at encouraging Czech men to abstain from alcohol for the month. The event is organised by the group League of Open Men but is also encouraging women to not drink a drop of alcohol during February. The Czech Republic has among the highest rates of alcohol consumption per capita worldwide. Health statistics show almost 1 million Czechs are at risk of alcohol abuse. A recent report from OECD shows that the Czech Republic ranks 4th in terms of alcohol consumption. The report used data from 2017, at which time Czechs consumed an average of 11.6 liters of absolute alcohol per year each. Pure alcohol is measured as one milliliter for every percentage of the drink’s strength if there is 100ml of it.
