The first art machine in the Czech Republic launched on Tuesday. Located in the upper part of Krymská Street in Prague 10, Artmat is made from an old cigarette machine that has a new look and function. Every box that falls out of the machine hides a small piece of art from students or graduates of art schools, but also from renowned Czech artists. The aim of the project is mainly to introduce young artists (students and recent graduates). The form of selling art in old vending machines is inspired by other countries, particularly Germany, where similar vending machines are popular places to obtain an original souvenir. In this old cigarette vending machine, those interested will now find boxes with small works of art such as graphic prints and illustrations, which are always accompanied by a text. “It is an original opportunity to spread quality art to the wider public, to support the work of young artists and to enrich the public space,” said Artmat founders Petra Widžová and Josefína Frýbová. Christmas markets (Vánoční trhy) are a key ingredient of the festive magic in the Czech Republic, and the Prague markets are the most impressive in the country. They light up the city, bringing locals and tourists together in a true ‘winter wonderland’ setting. The Namesti Miru Christmas market officially opens today, November 20th and is the first Christmas market of the season. It features more handmade goods than the touristy products that the Old Town Square market sells. You can find goods such as handmade soaps and lotions, jewelry, wooden toys, ceramic decorations, crystals, scarves and so on. The imposing neo-Gothic Church of St. Ludmila overlooks the wintery Christmas market, complete with a massive Christmas tree and Nativity scene. Food stands are offering grilled meat or sausages; please your sweet tooth with apple strudel, gingerbread, cookies, waffles, roasted almonds, cotton candy. Orel and friends is a space dedicated to Czech craft, located in the historical area of Malá strana in Prague, in the Nerudova street. This space is somewhere between a souvenir shop, an art gallery and a concept store. You will find there a unique selection coming from around 30 local artists: ceramics, wooden toys, jewelry, leather books, photos, notebooks, posters, handbags. Kinský Gardens are an area of 22 hectares located in Prague 5, on the southeastern slope of Petřin Hill and separated from the other Petřin gardens by the Hunger Wall, built by Charles IV. The best idea is to use the entrance gate on the top of Petřín Hill, between the Rose Garden and the Strahov Dormitory. In the garden, you will find a wooden church and the Kinský Summer Palace with a National Museum ethnographic exhibition. Woods originally occupied the area and then were replaced by vineyards. Prince Rudolf Kinský bought several vineyards on the hillside of Petřín intending to build an extensive garden and a summer residence. The Kinský Folly, located between Lesser Town and Smíchov, is now called the Kinský Summerhouse. Was built between 1827–1831 by the architect Heinrich Koch and since 1901, this unique summerhouse is an ethnographical museum. In 1922, the museum became part of the National Museum. It documents the traditional folk culture of the Czech lands, Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, presenting everyday rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries. Winter holiday-styled market will be inaugurated on November 20th at both locations, complete with Christmas trees, lights and aromatic traditional drinks and food. A few years ago, Sweden suddenly had the most innovative music scene in Europe with groups like The Knife, Little Dragon, and Jose Gonzalez to name just a few acclaimed on the international scene. Movits! joined this tier, but with even better sales internationally, by combining hip-hop and old-time jazz in a new direction—or at least it was new when they got started about a decade ago. After all, jazz and hip-hop have been joined at the hips since the beginning of hip-hop and in the UK with the Acid Jazz scene since the mid-90s, but hip-hoppers had never fully reached out to Swing, the golden age of jazz (the 1930s through 1950s), when swing dancing was the rage in America and Europe. And so, it took Movits!, a trio from Lulea, in northern Sweden to finally bridge these worlds. Shared services thrive in the capital. The same is true of so-called carsharing. The number of cars in this segment could almost double in the coming months. The first foreign player entered the market this past spring. The Anytime multinational service first deployed a hundred cars to Prague’s streets. Now it intends to expand its fleet by another two hundred vehicles. Next year, the German Volkswagen is considering entering the Prague market with the WeShare service, whose electric car has already proved its worth in Berlin. The Hungarian GreenGo is also planning to expand this year, which will also offer around a hundred electric vehicles in the capital. According to experts, carsharing services, along with well-functioning public transport and taxis, can make part of society decide not to own a car. “In a large Prague-like agglomeration, one shared car can replace up to ten parked cars in the streets,” explains Kryštof Kruliš, Chairman of the Consumer Forum Board.
