Zurich is the most expensive in the world for food, according to UBS Group AG’s Prices and Earnings report for 2018, a survey ranking global city prices, earning levels, purchasing power and working time to buy common goods. Prague has been placed 50th in the annual index. Switzerland’s Zurich is followed by Geneva, Oslo, Copenhagen and New York, while Kiev, Lagos and Cairo are the cheapest cities. The report showed that the average worker in Zurich needed to work 38.2 hours to earn enough to purchase an Apple iPhone. An average worker in Johannesburg needed to work 291.9 hours to earn enough to buy the same smartphone. First launched in 1971 and now in its 17th edition, the report compares 128 prices of various goods and services of a three-person European family. The final calculations also take into account the average earnings of 15 professions representing the average working population. The rankings are based on a report from the Institute for Economics and Peace, which takes into account statistical factors such as murder rates and military expenditure, as well as perceptions of criminality and terrorism levels. The peace coefficients of 163 countries and regions are then divided into five categories according to their security situation: very high, high, medium, low and very low. The rooftop Palac Lucerna in Prague will reopen to the public. Every Tuesday (starting from June 12) until the end of the summer there will be free yoga classes, starting at 7 am. The Global Peace Index 2018 was recently published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, revealing the safest and most dangerous countries in the world. Every nation was issued a peace score out of 5 (the lower the score, the higher the level of peace), determined by analysis of 23 factors under three categories: the level of safety and security in society, domestic and international conflict, and militarization. The countries that displayed the most significant growth in heavy weapons capabilities over the last 30 years are primarily in unstable regions where there are high tensions with neighboring countries. These include Egypt, India, Iran, Pakistan, South Korea, and Syria, it said. The greatest increase in the number of deaths occurred in Syria, followed by Mexico, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen. The four most peaceful regions – Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and South America – all recorded deteriorations, with the largest overall deterioration occurring in South America, owing to falls in the safety and security domain, mainly due to increases in the incarceration rate and impact of terrorism. Estonia’s Taxify is set to step up its fight against global rival Uber across Europe and Africa after raising $175 million in funding from a group led by German automaker Daimler. Didi also participated in the round, along with European venture capital fund Korelya Capital and TransferWise co-founder Taavet Hinrikus, with more than $100m of the investment coming from the German carmaker. The company said it plans to deploy the capital to develop its technology and make further expansions in Europe and Africa. More than 1000 firemen from all of the Czech and Moravian districts will commemorate the 100th anniversary from the foundation of Czechoslovakia in a really special way. They are going to create the biggest fireman fountain in the world, inspired by the motifs of the Bedřich Smetana’s symphonic poem called Vltava. The firefighters will use approximately 200 hose nozzles above the river in the center of Prague, between Jirasek and Palacky bridges. The event is scheduled to take place at 22:00. The Elbee is a weird vehicle. It opens from the front, and you don’t climb in, but ride straight into it with a wheelchair. The small car is one of the first vehicles made solely for disabled drivers. The car is the brainchild of Czech businessman Ladislav Brázdil. When he began his manufacturing company, Brázdil decided to follow his dream of creating his own product: an urban micro-car designed specifically for drivers in a wheelchair. “This was it,” says Brázdil. “It was something unique that we as an engineering business could produce.” The first model went to market at the end of 2014 and the historic first customer was František Trunda, who had lost both legs below the hips. For him, the car has provided a renewed sense of freedom. “It has changed my life,” he says. “I can now go for a drive out of town or go to see my brother.
