Exploring SAPA: Prague’s Vibrant Vietnamese District

Have you heard about the Vietnamese district in Prague called SAPA or Prague’s “Little Hanoi”? It is a genuinely different world with authentic Vietnamese food, Buddhist temple, and street vendors. Let’s explore more what this place can offer to one-day visitors. What is SAPA in Prague You might already notice that we don’t have any cultural districts in Prague, referring to inhabitants from different countries. The only exception is the Vietnamese district on the outskirts of Prague. Vietnamese are the third-largest minority of foreigners in Prague, just after Ukrainians and Slovakians. Vietnamese came to former communist Czechoslovakia for work and studies. With the fall of communism in 1989, the majority of them decided to stay and made the Czech Republic their permanent home. SAPA became a cultural and trading district of the Vietnamese community in Prague around 2000 when the former poultry farm closed and the whole compound became available. It is not particularly nice, but it is an interesting place to visit. High-quality food, freshly harvested vegetables, flowers, and more are set to grace the Rašín Embankment and Kubánské náměstí as the beloved farmers’ markets resume this Saturday, February 3. Náplavka Farmers’ Market Celebrates 15 Years Marking its 15th year, the Náplavka Farmers’ Market has become a staple for fresh, local produce. Inspired by markets in Germany and the United States, the journey wasn’t without challenges, according to Jiří Sedláček, chairman of the Archetype Association, which founded and manages the market. “At the beginning, convincing farmers and producers was a challenge, but our concept prevailed. Náplavka, with its refrigerated truck accessibility, stands out as a prime farmers’ market. This allows visitors to enjoy the freshest seasonal produce,” Sedláček noted This year, Náplavka is set to host various themed events, starting with the Pink May celebration on May 18, highlighting pink wines and clarets. On June 14 and 15, beer enthusiasts can relish the Pivo na Náplavce festival, showcasing small and mini Czech breweries. “Dry February 2024” Aims for a Healthier Lifestyle Beyond Sobriety

In the UK and US, people attempt a month without drinking alcohol under the banner of Dry January, but in Czechia, February is the nationally recognized month for abstaining. In its 2024 edition, the Dry February campaign (Suchej únor) extends its mission beyond alcohol abstinence, urging participants to embrace a healthier lifestyle. The goal is ambitious—to impact over one million individuals, building on the 14 percent of the population that engaged last year. For those backing the cause financially, benefits include online workout sessions and monthly memberships to weight-loss apps, to complimentary rides on shared bikes. “If we take data from the World Health Organisation, we have long been ranked among the top three global consumers. Some 14 litres of pure alcohol are consumed per person per year in this country, which is an enormous number. And that’s after deducting tourist consumption,”  says Petr Freimann of the non-profit organisation behind the campaign. Prague City Hall’s New Year Gift – Affordable Attractions for All!

The Prague City Hall has disclosed the details of the New Year surprise it has in store for its citizens on January 1, 2024. Earlier reports indicated that this surprise would serve as compensation for the decision to forgo fireworks, video mapping, and other mass celebrations on New Year’s Eve. The authorities deemed large-scale festivities inappropriate given the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and the challenging economic situation. Instead, Prague City Tourism plans to reduce the cost of visiting popular attractions for one day (January 1): Prague Zoo and the Botanical Gardens in the Troja neighborhood will be open to everyone, with a visit costing only 1 crown. An adult ticket to the Prague Public Transport Museum will cost 60 CZK, while a child’s ticket only 20 CZK. Seven Prague towers, including the Petřín Tower, the Old Town Tower, both towers of the Charles Bridge, and the Powder Gate, among others, will offer a 50% discount on entry. Říčany Boasts Best Quality of Life in Czechia, Prague Comes Second

According to a new index, Říčany is the best place to live and offers the highest quality of life in the Czech Republic, followed by Prague and Brandýs nad Labem. Říčany, a small town of over 16,000 souls in the Central Bohemian region located on the south-eastern outskirts of Prague, has – once again – been ranked as the place offering the best quality of life in the Czech Republic. The ranking, put together by data analysis company Obce v Datech in cooperation with consulting firm Deloitte in order to help municipalities identify possible deficiencies and people decide where to live, ranks over 200 Czech municipalities according to a number of criteria (health, environment, work, education, services, safety, transport, leisure, housing, etc.). According to Deloitte manager Filip Neterda, “our major goal is to actually help the cities to get their strategic priorities right, to better target the areas into which public investment is required […] We would be really happy if it could serve as a tool for public investment at the level of a city”. With the temperatures dropping and winter approaching, public ice rinks are gradually opening around Prague for people to enjoy the Advent season. For example, a shopping center’s roof can be an atypical place for ice skating. “Every year, we aim to bring something original to visitors so they can experience skating in new, unusual locations. That’s why we opened an ice rink on the roof of the Nový Smíchov Shopping Centre or inside the fountain in Prague’s Střížkov district. This is unique in the whole country; you won’t find any other round ice rink like this in the Czech Republic,” says Vít Bouše, the organizer of the Prague Ice Skating Rink project.
