Czech Lower House Approves Tougher Gun Law After Nation’s Worst Mass Shooting

The Czech Parliament’s lower house on Friday approved an amendment to the country’s gun law that tightens requirements for owning a weapon more than a month after the worst mass killing in the nation’s history. The legislation now goes before the Senate and if approved there must then be signed by President Petr Pavel before becoming law. On Dec. 22, a lone shooter killed 14 people and wounded dozens before killing himself at a Charles University building in downtown Prague. The assailant was a 24-year-old student who had a proclivity for firearms, with a license to own eight guns, including two long guns. Authorities said he had no criminal record and therefore did not attract the attention of authorities. Parliamentary debate on the legislation had already begun before that shooting. Interior Minister Vit Rakusan has said it was hard to speculate whether the new rules would have prevented it if they had been in effect before it took place. In the third week of January, Kasárna Karlín was registered in the Land Registry of the capital city. Now Prague City is looking for the most suitable use of the building. Czechia Suggests Restricting Russian Diplomats’ Movement Across Schengen Zone

The Czech Republic asks the EU to consider restrictions on the movement of Russian diplomats across the Schengen area. Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavsky offered to include the restriction in the next package of EU sanctions targeting Russia. “Czechia proposes to establish the restriction of the movement of Russian diplomatic mission staff and their family members only to the territory of the state where they are accredited. It is not right for Russian diplomats to take advantage of Schengen area. We will do our utmost to ensure that our proposal is included in the 13th sanctions package,” Lipavsky stated. He added that Ukraine’s security is “linked” to Czechia’s security and providing military and financial support to Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression is “a must”. Renovation of Jiřího z Poděbrad Square Officially Started

The first stage of the long-awaited reconstruction of Jiřího z Poděbrad Square has started in Prague. The renovation will last 33 months (until September 2026). Cultural events and the traditional farmers’ market will not be affected – they will continue to be held in different parts of the square, which will not be affected by the works at the moment. The city plans to plant over 140 new trees and install an irrigation system that will ensure the preservation of the square’s greenery. Children will also benefit from the upcoming renovation as the architects seek to expand the current playground and create new opportunities for play. The square’s fountain will also be revitalised and new pedestrian crossings will make the use of underpasses unnecessary. Finally, the city will also establish barrier-free access to the metro and renovate the entire station. Construction of Prague’s Vltava Philharmonic Hall to Start in 2027

The Vltava Philharmonic is moving one step closer to realization. The authors of the winning design of the future Prague landmark, the Danish studio Bjarke Ingels Group, are finalizing a detailed study. The architects will come to Prague to present the new visualizations. “Hundreds of top experts from the Czech Republic and all over the world are working on it, and the result will be detailed documentation that will be used as a basis for design work,” explains Martin Krupauer, head of the Vltava Philharmonic project team, who is managing the project for the capital. Train Collision in Karvinsko Injures 16 People, Leaves Driver Dead

A fast train collided with a truck in Karvinsko, killing one person and injuring at least 16 people, officials said. The Czech Railways said the driver of the train was killed. Police said their preliminary information shows dozens could be injured while the Czech Railways 16 people suffered injuries. Emergency services are currently at the scene. The accident occurred early in the morning when a fast train heading for Prague, hit a truck at a crossing near the town of Bohumin. Authorities say an investigation is underway into the cause of the crash. Czech Railways reported the collision on the Ostrava–Žilina line in the Bohumín–Dětmarovice section. The rescue system is fully engaged, and the police have confirmed one fatality, with ongoing emergency response efforts. The Railway Administration expects traffic disruptions throughout the day due to damage to the traction line, derailing of the locomotive, and a wagon. According to firefighters’ spokeswoman Kamila Langerová, 35 people were travelling on the train. Interior Ministry Introduces Updated Law for Foreigners’ Entry & Stay in Czechia

A new law regulating the entry and stay of internationals has been finalized by Czechia’s Ministry of the Interior, which, by digitalising the residence agenda, will accelerate the residence procedure and contribute to a more transparent legal regulation of the stay of internationals. Confirming that it has revised the existing law related to the entry and stay of internationals in the country, the Ministry of the Interior considered the current law “outdated” and, as a result of frequent amendments, “confusing”. The main change in the law is the digitalization of the residence agenda, while there will not be any substantial changes related to the conditions for granting a residence permit. The Ministry has stressed that in parallel with the preparation of the new law, a new information system is being built. Risk on the Shelves: Psychoactive Candies Appear in Czech Stores

Candy and confectionery containing psychoactive substances have recently emerged on the Czech market, escaping any legal regulations. This has led to their unregulated sale in various forms, without quality testing, and without restrictions, including to minors. Jindřich Vobořil, the national coordinator for drug policy, has highlighted the potential risks associated with these products. Vobořil draws attention to products containing the new semi-synthetic cannabinoid HHC, which mirrors the effects of THC, the primary natural psychoactive substance in cannabis. He urges vendors to remove these products from the market before the New Psychomodulants Act is enacted. “The consumption of these products, often featuring high concentrations of cannabinoids, poses risks due to potential strong and unexpected intoxication. This can be attributed to the slow absorption of the active substances, their prolonged action, or the difficulty in controlling the course of intoxication after ingestion,” warned Vobořil.
