The District Court for Prague 3 today sentenced former MP Dominik Feri to three years in prison for two rapes and one attempted rape. He was found guilty on all counts. The decision is not final, but Feri is expected to appeal it to the Prague City Court. The former politician has repeatedly denied his guilt. “The court established that the defendant committed sexual violence against all three victims,” said Judge Lenka Hájková. The prosecutor accused Feri of three acts, two of which she said occurred in March and November 2016 at his Prague 3 apartment. One of the girls was 17 years old at the time, and the prosecutor alleges that Feri gave her a soft drink when she wanted to leave, after which she became “partially unconscious.” Mr. Feri – then a high-profile member of the TOP 09 party – resigned in 2021 after media outlets carried a series of allegations of sexual impropriety against him. This information was reported on Wednesday by the weather station at Prague’s Clementinum, which has been maintaining statistics since 1775. According to its data, the average monthly temperature in October was +14.1°C, surpassing the previous record set in 1795 by 0.3°C. It is also 4.3°C higher than the long-term average for October (1775-2014) and 3.2°C above the recent climatic norm (1991-2020). The coldest October in Prague’s history was in 1905, with an average monthly temperature of +5.6°C, as depicted on the graph. The warmest day of October 2023 occurred on the 13th, with an average daily temperature of +19.8°C. In contrast, the coolest day was on the 17th, with an average daily temperature of +7.3°C. Prague’s historical record for the hottest October day dates back to October 3, 1929, with a temperature of +21.9°C. Three energy companies including U.S. Westinghouse, France’s EdF and Korea’s KHNP, have submitted their final bids to build the Czech Republic’s newest reactor at the Dukovany nuclear power station as the country strives to become more energy independent and wean itself of fossil fuels. State-controlled power company CEZ said Tuesday it would assess the bids for the multi-billion-dollar contract before sending its decision to the government for final approval of the winner. The three companies that met Tuesday’s deadline already submitted preliminary bids in November in a tender launched earlier in March 2022 after passing a Czech government security appraisal. The new reactor should become operational by 2036. The winner of the lucrative contract will then have an option to build three more nuclear reactors in the country. Last year, the Czech government excluded Russia’s energy giant Rosatom and China´s CNG from the tender process on security grounds. The Czech economy unexpectedly contracted on a quarterly basis in the July-September period, preliminary statistics office data showed on Tuesday, as a drop in foreign demand pulled the country back towards recession. Czech gross domestic product declined 0.3% in the third quarter, missing a median expectation that it would stagnate and contracting by more than all but the most pessimistic analyst had forecast in a Reuters poll. On a year-on-year basis, the economy shrank 0.6%, deeper than the median forecast for a 0.3% drop. The economy had pulled out of a recession in the first half of 2023 but is struggling to recover from last year’s surge in inflation, with consumer activity still weak and firms reporting shrinking order books from domestic and foreign clients. The statistics office did not break down the preliminary data but said foreign demand negatively impacted the quarterly result, while domestic demand stagnated.
