The Czech Republic has dropped down the rankings of English proficiency since last year, ranking 26th of 113 countries in EF Education First’s annual English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), down from 23rd in 2022. The Czech Republic is still categorised among countries with ‘very high’ proficiency in the English language, but ranks below all its neighbours; Austria is 3rd, Germany 10th, Poland 13th and Slovakia 18th. Among European countries, the Czech Republic ranks 21st. The Netherlands tops the rankings, as last year. Sabina Wyrob, from the Czech office of EF Education First, said Czech children have far fewer private language lessons than children in other European countries. She said the online teaching during the coronavirus pandemic also affected their English skills, as Czech children did not actively use the language and did not try to communicate. Schools and students are trying to catch up on what was missed, but are still not moving forward. Czech start-up Bene Meat Technologies is the first to win European Union registration for laboratory-grown meat for use in pet food and plans to boost production to make up to several metric tons per day next year, the company said on Wednesday. A number of firms are racing globally to develop commercially viable lab-grown meat and fish products to appeal to consumers concerned about ethical issues and the environmental impact of livestock farming, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. In the United States, Upside Foods and Good Meat won regulatory approval in June for their so-called cultivated meat, made from animal cells, for human consumption, a second place after Singapore. But large-scale production is yet to begin. Bene Meat has turned its focus to the pet food sector to deliver a product that can be marketed to global pet food makers as a raw material for inclusion in their final products. The product received certification in the European Feed Materials Register, the company said. Aerospace developers have been exploring new technology that would allow people to airlift between cities using AI-controlled drones, allowing Prague passengers to transport between Prague’s main station Hlavní nádraží to Vaclav Havel Airport in a matter of minutes. This technology is not a part of a new sci-fi movie, but rather it is the future of air transport that was presented by experts at the Aerospace Research and Test Institute on Monday. While the construction of the new metro connection in the direction of the airport is still nowhere in sight, Czech experts have begun working on the concept of air travel. Czech industrial production decreased by 5% year on year and by 1.8% month on month in September. It is the third month of consecutive y/y decline. The value of new orders decreased by 5.2% y/y but increased by 3.4% m/m, the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) reported. Analysts quoted by Czech Television (CT) sounded alarm bells, pointing out that a disruption in supply chains in the car industry caused by damaging August floods in Slovenia quickened the September decline of Czech industry. “Even though part of the weak figures is due to technical influence, drops in energy production and warmer weather, nothing can change the fact that the drop is registered in most sectors in the industry,” analyst of the Czech Banking Association Jakub Seidler was quoted as saying by CT. The y/y decrease in industrial production was “most contributed to by electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, manufacture of machinery and equipment, and by manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products,” commented Radek Matejka of CZSO. British low-cost carrier EasyJet is set to launch a new direct flight connecting Prague to the sunny Spanish city of Alicante, beginning operations on 1 April 2024, as announced in their recent press release. The flight service is scheduled for twice a week, operating on Mondays and Fridays, with a travel time of nearly three hours. Tickets for this convenient route are already available for purchase, starting at just 650 kronor for a one-way trip. Notably, starting from 31 March, the German low-cost carrier Eurowings will resume its flights between Prague and Alicante after the winter hiatus. Trains will run from Prague to Gdynia, and on the Polish side, the line will be operated by PKP Intercity. The new Ex32 line will be launched next year and the Czech transport minister has already confirmed this information. What exactly will the route look like? Trains on the Ex32 line will run on the Prague – Pardubice – Wroclaw – Gdynia route. In Poland, in addition to Gdynia and Wrocław, the train will also make stops at Poznań, Bydgoszcz and Gdańsk. “Prague, Wrocław, and Gdansk, on the Baltic coast, will be connected by a new railway line from December 2024. Knowing the language and even different dialects could also help you integrate better if you choose to move. But where in Europe is it easiest to learn the local language? Learning platform Preply looked at 29 European countries to discover which were the easiest to visit and live in when it comes to languages. They ranked the nations from most challenging to least based on criteria including their English proficiency scores, native languages, accents, dialects and the average cost of a language lesson.
