If you visit the center of Prague or any Czech town on the 11th of November, you might see a man on a white horse leading a procession… These processions are in honor of St. Martin, patron saint of the poor, and the white horse represents winter and snow. Not only on this day but for most of November, look for restaurants serving goose and St. Martin’s wine (Husa a Svatomartinské vino) which is the traditional food for the feast day. The reason behind this tradition is that it is said a flock of geese betrayed St. Martin’s hiding place and we have been eating roast goose on this day ever since. One of the main celebrations will take place at Náplavka (Rašínovo nábřeží) on November 11. You can look forward to a traditional presentation of young wines from Moravia and Bohemia and goose delicacies such as traditional goose roast with dumplings, lokše (Slovak potato pancakes), or pasta with onion white and red cabbage, goose burgers or goose ragout with vegetables, roasted goose liver, goose soup “kaldoun”, and other goose delicacies. There will be a musical program as well. Wine will be tasted from the festival glasses. This gives...
Transport Prague testing holograms in the metro In Prague’s metro on Line A, new light effects have sparked discussions among passengers. This innovation was not announced beforehand and was first noticed on the Line A. It looks like that synchronized LED panels have been installed in the tunnel. They switch on when the train travels at a speed of at least 40 km/h. Daniel Šabik, the official representative of the Transport Company of Prague, confirmed that the system has been adjusted and tested for the last few weeks. However, he did not specify its intended purpose. He mentioned that the company will soon release a press statement with all the details. Při jízdě metrem mi spadla brada. Na Bořislavce testují v tunelu hologramy. Budoucnost je tady! #prague #metro pic.twitter.com/fCT7xBJYee — Pozdní Adam (@pozdni_adam) October 30, 2023 Social media users suggested that this could be a new form of underground advertising. However, there is no confirmation of this speculation. Users on social media shared their opinions, with one user expressing excitement about the potential holograms, while others believe it’s a well-synchronized LED panel. Some passengers found the flickering lights annoying, while others found it amusing. A press release is expected soon....

Valencia, Keflavík, Bilbao, and Cairo – new destinations, which will help increase winter traffic at Václav Havel Airport Prague by almost a quarter compared to last winter. Passengers will be able to choose from 111 direct connections. There will also be direct long-haul charter services to exotic destinations such as Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Cuba. As many as 46 airlines will operate direct air connections under the winter flight schedule. For the first time in history, winter holiday ski charters to the Turkish resort of Kayseri will be offered. According to Jiří Vyskoč, Aviation Business Development Executive Director, the winter flight schedule is in line with the strategy of resuming and increasing frequencies. “Thanks to this trend, we already handled over 11 million passengers by mid-October, and we believe that the new connections will propel further growth. We assume that by 2026 we will be able to return to the pre-Covid-19 figures. The increases during the winter season should also contribute and help us handle more than 15 million passengers next year.” The development of the conflict in Ukraine will also play its part. Prague Airport is currently missing 14 destinations from Russia and Ukraine, amounting to 10 percent of...
Three energy companies including U.S. Westinghouse, France’s EdF and Korea’s KHNP, have submitted their final bids to build the Czech Republic’s newest reactor at the Dukovany nuclear power station as the country strives to become more energy independent and wean itself of fossil fuels. State-controlled power company CEZ said Tuesday it would assess the bids for the multi-billion-dollar contract before sending its decision to the government for final approval of the winner. The three companies that met Tuesday’s deadline already submitted preliminary bids in November in a tender launched earlier in March 2022 after passing a Czech government security appraisal. The new reactor should become operational by 2036. The winner of the lucrative contract will then have an option to build three more nuclear reactors in the country. Last year, the Czech government excluded Russia’s energy giant Rosatom and China´s CNG from the tender process on security grounds. Prime Minister Petr Fiala said Russian participation in the project, which is critical for the Czech Republic’s energy security, was “unimaginable” following the Kremlin´s invasion of Ukraine. The new reactor will complement Dukovany’s four 510-megawatt units that were completed in the 1980s. Last year, the government originally estimated the project would cost...
The Czech economy unexpectedly contracted on a quarterly basis in the July-September period, preliminary statistics office data showed on Tuesday, as a drop in foreign demand pulled the country back towards recession. Czech gross domestic product declined 0.3% in the third quarter, missing a median expectation that it would stagnate and contracting by more than all but the most pessimistic analyst had forecast in a Reuters poll. On a year-on-year basis, the economy shrank 0.6%, deeper than the median forecast for a 0.3% drop. The economy had pulled out of a recession in the first half of 2023 but is struggling to recover from last year’s surge in inflation, with consumer activity still weak and firms reporting shrinking order books from domestic and foreign clients. The statistics office did not break down the preliminary data but said foreign demand negatively impacted the quarterly result, while domestic demand stagnated. The Czech data is the first insight into third-quarter growth in central Europe, where Hungary, Poland and others have also felt the impact of soaring prices for energy, food and other goods and are slow to recover. “This weakness in the (Czech) economy also increases the likelihood that the central bank will...
If I had to select one area of Prague I love the most, it would have to be Prague – Royal Vineyards, Vinohrady in Czech, or “Královské Vinohrady”. As you might know from the recent article, Vinohrady was rated as one of the coolest areas in the world. Vinohrady has a unique and charming atmosphere and will always maintain its value because of its prestige, history, architecture, and limited areas for new development. In this article, I will cover the history of the villa district spreading from Bezručovy sady all the way down to the borders with Prague 3 and 10. You can look forward to a series of articles about the Vinohrady area, starting today with the history of the villa area and what happened before the first villas even began construction. The Early Years Vinohrady was originally a rural area with vineyards and orchards covering much of the land. The first permanent settlements in the area date back to the 12th century. By the 15th century, it was a thriving agricultural community thanks to an order of Charles the IV which stated that within a 3.5km area from Prague Castle, vineyards shall be planted and wine for the...

The development of Frenkee began in 2019, culminating in a live launch in early 2022. The origins date back to the chytrecestovko.cz app, which originally helped travellers select and arrange suitable travel insurance based on their planned activities and holiday destinations. With time, however, other opportunities in the digital financial world became apparent, leading to the creation of a comprehensive financial e-commerce ecosystem. Frenkee leverages its knowledge and queries to provide guidance and facilitate customers to find the optimal solution for their needs. Q: Are expats using Frenkee more interested in Insurance Loans or Investments? So far, foreigners are...

The 24th edition of the Mezipatra Queer Film Festival finds itself at Crossroads. This year’s theme alludes to everyday small decisions, as well as major life intersections that can unexpectedly alter our lives. The audience can explore 24 feature films and 45 short films. The festival’s grand opening will take place on November 2nd at 7:00 PM at the Lucerna cinema with the Italian love story of two seventeen-year-olds. Fireworks (Stranizza d’amuri), based on true events, immerses viewers in the story of a forbidden love between two young men in 1980s Italy, complicated by the strongly homophobic environment of a Sicilian town. The program also features the critically acclaimed French film Passages about a seemingly content married couple whose harmony is disrupted by Martin’s encounter with the charming Agathe. The film explores the complex dynamics of romantic relationships, honesty, and erotic tension, earning it a nomination for the Teddy Award at the Berlinale and the Audience Award at the Sunny Bunny Festival. “If I had to pick just one of the feature films, I would recommend the debut of Spanish director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren, ‘20,000 Species of Bees.’ It portrays three generations of women during one hot summer, each trying...
The following two weeks will develop at least two powerful Atlantic cyclones impacting Western Europe. A powerful storm Ciaran will bring violent winds, huge amounts of rain, and increasing flooding. The UK, Ireland, France, and Benelux will be in the hot spot this week and the next weekend. The unusual weather pattern established over the North Atlantic and Europe over the last few weeks will continue and worsen as we head into November. The historically warm North Atlantic ocean water temperatures will support violent extratropical storm development towards Europe. The first Atlantic storm Ciaran is coming up Thursday this week, with rapid cyclogenesis occurring before the major impact with violent, hurricane-force winds and heavy rain squalls blast into Ireland, the UK, the English Channel, northern France, and Benelux on Thursday. Storm Ciarán will also affect the Czech Republic with strong south-easterly winds, particularly in the eastern half of the country, later on Thursday and into the night on Friday. “The maximum wind gusts should be between 55 and 70 kilometres per hour, and around 90 kilometres per hour in higher and mountainous areas,” the CNMI said, adding that the forecast would be refined according to the situation.
The design proposal for three new airport buildings by MVRDV Netherlands-based architecture and urban design practice prepared in cooperation with NACO (Netherlands Airport Consultants) won the Prague Airport architectural competition. The design extends Terminal 1 with a new building for central security screening, business areas, and VIP lounges. A building comprising a hotel, conference centre, and parking facilities will be constructed in the public part of the airport. The new buildings will provide the airport with enhanced operational flexibility and additional options to easily accommodate any future expansion and redevelopment. According to Jiří Kraus, Vice-chairman of the Board of Directors, working with a globally active architecture studio represents Václav Havel Airport Prague a promise of building world-class architecture with emphasis on sustainability. “The competition attracted extraordinary interest among architects, including foreign ones. The object of the Terminal 1 centralised security screening point, together with the partially developed solution for the Terminal 2 expansion, will become the cornerstone of a large-scale mosaic of a strategically important project; the project of completing the terminal capacity building process.” MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas acknowledged that most airport experiences these days have become detached from any sense of place, or any sense of control...
