The history of Czechoslovak LSD is one of the greatest phenomena of the second half of the 20th century. How come for almost a quarter of a century, in a communist state, thousands of people, including many popular artists such as Karel Gott, were able to use psychedelic drugs entirely legally? In the autumn of 1952 several young psychiatrists in Prague ingested for the first time a mysterious substance that had been sent from a laboratory in Basel. This is how the Czechoslovak adventure with LSD began. The substance arrived in Prague in an entirely legal way. A standard shipment from the pharmaceutical company Sandoz was sent to Dr Jiří Roubíček, an associate professor at the Faculty of Psychiatry at the Medical University of Prague. It contained ampoules with an oily, transparent substance described as ‘lysergic acid diethylamide’, a substance first synthesized in 1938 by the Swiss scientist Albert Hofmann. Initially considered useless, LSD attracted the attention of the company owners after Hoffman accidentally tested its effects on himself on 19th April 1943. Four years later, the first study summarizing the results of LSD tests involving healthy volunteers and patients in psychiatric hospitals was released. The article was attached to the parcel...
Prague City Gallery on October 12 started the European premiere of the Taylor Camp collection of photographs at the Stone Bell House on Old Town Square. Visitors have the opportunity to see the life in a Hawaiian community that had no laws or rules, yet was united by a desire for freedom. John Wehrheim has won two Emmy Awards for his collection of photographs and documentary film on Bhutan. “Diverse subcultures are an essential part of any democratic society. This important American photographer will be presented in the Czech Republic for the first time. Through its focus on the hippie movement, the exhibition also aims at raising awareness of the need to strengthen civil society,” says Martin Řezníček, one of the three exhibition curators. “The life for people at Taylor Camp represented going beyond utopia – living in harmony with nature with a sense of freedom, tolerance and sustainability, which are themes that are gaining in importance and relevance today,” adds the exhibition curator Adam Ligas. Since its destruction by government officials in 1977, the Taylor Camp settlement on the Hawaiian island of Kauai has become a social phenomenon and, like the famous Woodstock festival, a memento of its time...
The first shipment of trams to Kharkiv in the northeast of Ukraine is due to leave Prague on Thursday afternoon to help the city renew transport following the Russian onslaught. The trams will arrive in Ukraine in two days. In total, DPP will donate twenty trams and two buses to Ukraine, specifically to the city of Khmelnytskyy. “We were approached by several Ukrainian cities and we were able to meet the city representatives of Kharkiv, where similar types of trams are actually used and they know how to repair and modify them,” said Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Piráti). The convoy of trucks with trams will set off from Prague via Ostrava and Poland to Kharkiv. “The entire journey, including mandatory breaks for drivers, will take about two days. Students from Masaryk University in Brno are asking for “gender-neutral” toilets. They published a petition “Gender-neutral toilets at Masaryk University”, which was signed by 340 people by Tuesday. The representatives and people behind the petition do not want to replace the binary toilets, but want to add or change some existing toilets to neutral. “Students who identify as non-binary are in the worst situation,” the petition reads. “Students often find themselves unable to find restrooms designated for their gender, which can result in uncomfortable situations and have a negative impact on their health,” the petition reads, adding that students who identify as non-binary are in the worst situation. “Meeting physiological needs is more than important for effective work on campus, which is why proximity and appropriate labeling of restrooms is also very important to us,” the student petition points out. “One of the bad examples we want to change is the illogical location of the men’s toilets in the Art Department (opposite classroom 13), most of whose students are women,” the petition concludes. Gender-neutral toilets are becoming increasingly ‘popular’ across Europe. Zurich, Switzerland, for example, plans to introduce up to one third of gender-neutral toilets in new school buildings. The first one-way ticket for the Paris metro began to be valid on July 19, 1900 at 13:00. It cost just 25 centimes in old money and gave the passenger a seat in first class. At least according to Daniel Šabík, head of communications at the transport company. “We are not planning to stop selling paper tickets overnight. However, within the framework of distribution channels, we will go the way of further gradual digitalization," Šabík tells Metro daily, according to which, for example, contactless terminals are already being installed in city buses.” “The first of them should start working in November and by the end of this year all our buses will be equipped with them. By the end of this year, we plan to launch a pilot project in which coupons, including annual coupons, could be purchased cashlessly in ticket machines. The largest rail carrier in the Czech Republic, České dráhy, has announced an increase in average fares of 15% starting December 11. The company attributed the price increase to rising energy costs in the Czech Republic. This is the sharpest increase in the last fifteen years. Tickets at current prices will be available until December 10 with a deferred validity of up to two months. For people who use trains regularly, this means being able to use the old fares until early February. “We are trying to keep the price increase below the level of inflation even though the costs, which are critical for rail transport, have risen much more than that,” Frantisek Emelka of the Czech Ministry of Transport told IDNES. With the new prices, the cost of a 10-kilometer ticket will increase by 4 crowns to 31 crowns. Up to 45 km will go up by 12 crowns – up to 92 crowns, while up to 100 km will go up by 25 crowns – to 188 crowns. The price of the so-called “Ticket for Summer” – a pass that allows passengers to travel without restrictions around the country – will also increase significantly. It will go up...
