This year, for the first time, the flagship educational project Fireflies of the Czech Radio Endowment Fund will open its doors to the guests of Café POTMĚ, in Náměstí Míru in Prague. From June 22 to July 3, Praguers will be able to enjoy the lively café bustle and authentic atmosphere while sitting in complete darkness in the company of blind and partially sighted cafe-goers. The goal of the program is to introduce sighted guests to the world of the blind, giving them an opportunity to step into the shoes of a blind person. Guests can enjoy, among other things, musical performances, wine tastings and live broadcasts by Czech Radio stations. In the café, customers can look forward to professional service from visually impaired staff, who will be happy to present a piece of their everyday world. Upon arrival, visitors will be welcomed and provided with the necessary instructions, then they will be turned over to guides, who will take them to the table and hand them over to their waiter. According to preliminary data, the population of the Czech Republic increased by 3.2 thousand during the first quarter and reached 10.52 million. The whole increase was ensured by the positive balance of international migration (10.8 thousand), while natural change was negative (–7.6 thousand). The number of marriages increased year on year, while the number of births and deaths was lower than in the first quarter of 2021. The population of the Czech Republic consisted of almost 10.52 million (on 31 March). This figure does not include persons who have been granted temporary protection in connection with the war in Ukraine. Big changes are coming up on Victory Square in Prague, with plans to transform the entire space. The city and private sector are working together to revive the neighborhood–and in the process, creating a new form of public space is planned for students. An international architectural competition has been announced for the buildings that should complement the square, prepared by the private sector together with the city, the district, and the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR). Offices, flats and a new building for the ICT are planned in the place. The land was originally owned by the university and sold to developers with the promise of building new premises with facilities for students, including laboratories. Developers estimate the completion date at 2028. Budvar, the Czech brewer that has been in a long legal dispute with U.S. company Anheuser-Busch over use of the Budweiser brand, increased its beer exports last year despite the pandemic. Budejovicky Budvar NP, a 126-year-old state-owned brewery, said Monday its exports were up a record 11% in 2021, reaching 1.3 million hectoliters. Budvar sells its beer in more than 70 countries. It said in a statement that all its major markets, including Germany, Britain and Slovakia, contributed to increased sales. Specifically, the brewer´s sales in Germany surpassed 500,000 hectoliters for the first time. Budvar previously said it registered a record output for the second straight pandemic year in 2021, rising 4.6% to 1.8 million hectoliters. Profit figures haven’t been released yet. The pandemic affected the beer markets with demand for beer in tanks and barrels declining as bars and restaurants were closed for some time while demand for bottled beer was on the rise. The brewer has expanded in recent years to be able to produce more than 2 million hectoliters of beer a year. That investment helped it react to changes in the markets amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Vinohrady was established on a vast empty hill behind Prague. It sports wide boulevards intertwined with parks, making it one of the most prestigious neighborhoods to live in. The biggest homing pigeons’ race took place this morning in Krajková, in the Sokolovsko region. 23,000 homing pigeons set out on a flight of several hundred kilometres from West Bohemia to Moravia or as far as Slovakia. The first pigeons made it back home within five to six hours. Pigeons flew 300-400 kilometers across the country. The first of them came back home (in the village of Havrice) at 10:01, after covering more than 348 kilometers.

After several months of testing, technology company Wolt launches a new subscription program in Prague that provides customers free delivery. They can save at least CZK 29 for each purchase. The monthly subscription price is CZK 109 and is valid for orders from selected venues, of which there are currently 1,700. The program should be expanded to other cities in the future. During the testing, 5,000 active subscribers have already joined Wolt+ and on average saved CZK 289 per month. In addition, for the first two weeks, customers can try the service for free. The interest rate on the euro-denominated loan should be below 2% and the city can repay the principal over 40 years. Prague City Councilors have agreed on the terms of a loan of up to CZK 23 billion (EUR 1 billion) to be granted to the city by the European Investment Bank for the construction of metro line D. The transaction only needs to be approved by members of the Prague City Assembly. The CZK 23 billion loan covers almost half of the total cost of the metro line D construction between the Pankrac and Nove Dvory stops. Prague will have the option of drawing the loan in CZK or in EUR, while drawing in euros allows for interest rates below 2% per annum.
