The Gray Man, a $200 million Netflix blockbuster starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling will be shooting in the Czech capital through July 20. The action on The Gray Man is now taking place during daytime hours, between 9:30 and 19:00 in Prague 7, especially in the area of Dukelských hrdinů and surroundings. A charity concert for tornado victims in South Moravia featuring top local acts will take place at Prague’s Wenceslas Square on Wednesday. Thunderstorms, hailstones the size of tennis balls and a tornado of over 200 kilometers per hour hit the Břeclav and Hodonín districts in South Moravia. Moravská Nová Ves, Hrušky, Mikulčice, Lužice and Hodonín were the spots that suffered the most. Some 1,200 houses were damaged and six lives were lost. The leading bands of the Czech music scene have also decided to help, performing on Wenceslas Square as part of the Together for Moravia concert on Wednesday, July 7 at 8 pm. According to the organizer, all proceeds from the concert will go to Via Foundation, an independent, Czech community and philanthropy development foundation that has raised more than CZK 204 million to date. Citizens can report vandalism via the “Bez Graffiti” mobile application. Tackling graffiti is a challenge for many cities around the world. By vandalising property and defiling public spaces, graffiti decreases the attractiveness of cities. Often, one can see hate speech sprayed onto walls, monuments, and properties. Unsurprisingly, this decreases the quality of life for citizens and gives rise to deeper issues. Now, the City of Prague has set its sight on fighting this problem with a pilot project to remove graffiti from city buildings. To successfully do so, it has entrusted the municipal company Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP) and released a new mobile application where citizens can report vandalism. “Graffiti in a public space is a long-standing problem, defiling public areas and destroying both public and private property. I am convinced that in addition to correcting vandalism, the project will also have an important preventive role. When sprayers see that their creations on surfaces covered with anti-graffiti paint disappear again, they will lose the motivation to continue,” explained Councillor Jan Chabr. Czech senators have approved an amendment to allow women to remove the suffix -ová, which denotes the grammatical gender, from their surname. If signed into law by President Miloš Zeman, parents could also decide to keep the masculine form (thus without the suffix –ová) of their daughters’ surname. In the Czech language, the ending “-ova” is added to all surnames for women, so Mr. Novak’s daughter becomes Ms. Novakova. Women have only been able to drop the “-ova” ending in limited circumstances, such as if they have foreign nationality or live with a foreigner. The Senate will now vote on the change. The proposal was brought forward by former Justice Minister Helena Valkova. Current rules mean that the wife or daughter of a Czech man has the -ova suffix added to her name, such as tennis star Petra Kvitova. The pattern is similar to that seen in other Slavic languages and is also applied to foreign leaders and politicians – including former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The leaders of the Visegrád Four (V4) countries of Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Poland stressed that they must work together to become a winner in a world transformed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The political bloc needs investments to succeed and, therefore, will not support tax increases, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after the meeting of the prime ministers of the V4 in Katowice on Wednesday. Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch (ANO) is considering making pubs and restaurants responsible for actively checking guests’ Covid certificates. According to him, it will be easier with a mobile application for storing and checking certificates. At present visitors to pubs and restaurants must have a negative test, certificate of vaccination or post Covid immunity, but they are only obliged to produce it in the event of an inspection. However, not everyone has welcomed this proposal.
