The most popular alcoholic beverage in the Czech Republic is wine, beer comes in second place. According to a study by Focus agency for the wine-growers’ association Vinařský fond, 73 percent of Czech adults consume wine, compared to 65% who indulge in beer. The survey was conducted in August and September last year with more than 1,200 respondents over the age of eighteen. With regard to overall volume, ie in terms of the amount consumed, however, beer is still in the first place. “The survey showed that wine consumers tend to be patriotic. Almost three-fifths prefer Moravian and Czech wines mainly because of the taste and in part because they wish to support domestic production,” said Jaroslav Machovec, director of Vinařský fond. Most Czechs who drink wine prefer the whites (54%) – particularly semi-dry ones – by far more popular than the red (15%) or rosé (6%) varieties. A quarter of them declared not having any specific preference. Two-thirds of wine consumers buy wine from retail outlets, but according to the survey, more and more people buy it in wine shops or directly from winemakers. Only five percent of wine drinkers buy the beverage online. Compared to the previous survey,...

An application that enables people who are either vaccinated or have a negative COVID-19 test to visit restaurants, gyms, barbershops and other facilities is currently under development. A brainchild of the Chamber of Commerce, the concept will be discussed by Chamber and government with the possibility of running the app on the state level. The idea is simple: install the app on your phone and log in to your account to get access to confirmation of vaccination or a negative coronavirus test. After that, a map will be shown, indicating the nearest “safe establishments” – businesses that adhere to sanitary measures. When entering the facility, an employee will scan a QR-code from the app to check whether you are vaccinated or have a confirmation of a negative test. You can then proceed to enjoy services of the establishment. One of the people in charge of the app development is Zdeněk Zajíček, vice president of Chamber of Commerce and president of ICT Unie association. According to Zajíček, the app will benefit both customers and business owners. “We want to motivate our entrepreneurs to be ready for waves of easing,” he said. He also confirmed that Chamber is negotiating with the Ministry...
The 26th Volkswagen Prague Marathon moved from its traditional spring date to October 10. Throughout the pandemic, and against all odds, RunCzech has found dozens of creative ways to stage safe, small running events, along with other ways of keeping the running community engaged in their beloved sport. That has required near-constant meetings among RunCzech team members and authorities in local and national government. But finding an opportunity to stage its signature event—the internationally acclaimed Volkswagen Prague Marathon—has eluded them. Until now. Health and public officials now feel more confident that moving the race to the fall will make it possible for RunCzech to safely host a large-scale event, and accommodate the thousands of fans and volunteers who come out to support the participants. And RunCzech has set a date—October 10, 2021. According to Tomas Coufal from the RunCzech team, the capacity of the event will be determined in conjunction with health and government officials. „Our priority is definitely runners‘ safety and health,“ Mr. Coufal adds. „So runners who have already registered in 2020 will have the option of transferring their registration to 2022. He also pledges to keep runners informed about all vital health updates. In the meantime, RunCzech...

Blanket security checks at Prague Castle are ending from Friday, a spokesperson for President Miloš Zeman said on Tuesday. For many years Prague Castle was open for free to everyone. Having several entrances, it was very easy to get inside without waiting. Since summer 2016, Czech president Miloš Zeman decided to put security checks in place. This measure started to cause a big problem: line ups. “After evaluating the current security situation and in connection with the strengthening of the camera system, blanket security checks at the entrance at Prague Castle are ending from Friday, April 2nd,” said the Office of the President of the Republic (KPR). “Members of the Police of the Czech Republic are still entitled to invite visitors to undergo a random personal security check. A member of the police has the right to prevent entry into Prague Castle with items the entry of which is prohibited according to the valid visiting rules,” states the president’s office. In the past five years, visitors had to walk through a security frame and took anything made of metal out of their pockets (keys, coins…) and then asked to open their bag. Increased security at Prague Castle was promised in the...
Effective 1 April 2021, Prague Airport will launch a service for a new segment of passengers transferring in Prague between flights operated by different air carriers. “Partly it was the COVID-19 pandemic that provided the impulse for Anglo-American University, whose core mission is providing a university education to high-school graduates, to jump-start the lifelong learning project, which has been a long time in the making,” describes Eva Rivera, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement, in an interview with Prague Morning, as to what has led the university to open the AAU Academy in January this year. “With colleagues, we were discussing our own experiences and lessons learned from the current situation and concluded that continuous, lifelong and professional learning is a key need of today’s global society. Our world is rapidly changing and we need to advance our skills to stay relevant in the workplace, acquire the tools to embark on new career paths, or simply broaden our horizons and increase intellectual engagement in all aspects of life.” “Last, but not least: we all need to learn how to tackle the new professional and personal challenges the pandemic has brought upon us. AAU Academy courses thus go beyond career advancement, and can benefit all of us – our friends and peers, colleagues, as well as the international community living in Prague,” adds Rivera. Artist Kurt Gebauer has installed a new sculpture at Victory Square in Prague 6 dubbed the ‘Early Capitalism Caterpillar’. The art installation is 11 meters tall. The sculpture was conceptualized by Gebauer in 1997 but had no financial backup for its installation. During the communist era, a statue of Lenin stood in place of where the sculpture is now. That statue has since been torn down after the revolution. “That was supposed to be the joke that the Caterpillar of early capitalism would be where Lenin stood. Even then, it was supposed to provoke a discussion about the state of society. What will this capitalism become? Everything will be eaten or a beautiful butterfly will hatch…,” Gebauer commented. The sculpture had been installed in numerous places around Prague. Previously in Wenceslas Square, and most recently in front of the Trade Fair Palace, it has now finally reached the initial designated location it was supposed to be on from conception. The sculpture caused quite a stir and there was a heated debate on the city district’s Facebook page about its installation. Many of the public were quite interested in the price for its installation. Reportedly, it cost the state around 39,000...
Jan Blatný, Czech Minister of Health, claimed that the state of emergency, extended by two weeks on Friday, must be accompanied by all the restrictions which had been approved before the vote. Furthermore, Blatný added that the rigid enforcement of these restrictions must linger in order to ensure a smooth transition to normalcy in the country. The minister hopes that this renewal of the state of emergency will be the last one. On the TV show Questions of Václav Moravec premiered on Sunday 28th Blatný asserted that without diligent compliance with all the precautions currently in force, the government would have to act resolutely. “The moment we succumb to some false illusion or a feeling that the measures do not have to be observed, drastic changes may happen that no one wants,” said the minister. “All other steps assume that at least until then [April 12th] all the precautions remain in force,” he added. Blatný warned that otherwise, the epidemic situation could start to deteriorate again. The precautions mentioned by Blatný included a restriction on free movement which was reintroduced at the end of January. Due to it, neither citizens nor foreigners can travel between districts without a compelling reason....
