The government has tightened measures against the spread of coronavirus. The Czech Republic will return to the fourth risk tier of the anti-epidemic system PES from Friday. It’s official: the Czech Republic will move to the fourth 4 PES level from Friday, December 18. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) announced the new restrictions after Monday’s government meeting. Below a recap of the restriction measures: Shops and services (ex. hairdressers) will remain open, restaurants, hotels, fitness centers, museums, and galleries will be closed. Food businesses will be able to open dispensing windows The night curfew will be renewed from 11 pm to 5 am Public gatherings will be limited to six people both indoors and out, instead of the current 10 and 50, respectively. Indoor sports grounds for amateurs will be closed from Friday, as well. An initial allocation of roughly 9,750 COVID-19 vaccine doses could be received in the Czech Republic on December 28, with initial priority given to health care workers. According to the Czech Vaccinological Society, half doses should be delivered in Prague and the other half in Brno. To receive immunity, adults need to receive two doses. Minister of Health Jan Blatný (ANO) said on Friday that the vaccination in the Czech Republic could begin in six-eight weeks. “If everything goes as planned, the vaccination of about 5.5 million people, which is about 60-70 percent of the adult population, should be completed at the end of next summer,” the minister said. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which was announced to be 90% effective at protecting people from coronavirus, needs to be stored at around -70C. According to the government’s strategy, the vaccine should be delivered to one million people in the first quarter of 2021, to 2.62 million people in the second quarter, to 2.42 million people in the third quarter, and to 382,000 people in the last three months of next year. Depot.Bike, Prague’s first cycle depot, was ceremoniously opened in November. The depot, located in the Florenc section of the city, will facilitate the delivery of goods throughout the city center by cargo bike, and forms part of the city’s plan to ease the congestion of public space, reduce traffic, and improve the quality of life for city residents. At the opening ceremonies, Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor for Transport, noted: “At the cycle depot on Těšnov Street near Florenc, goods will be transferred from trucks to special e-bikes, and then taken by couriers directly to customers. We’ve planned everything to be just in time for Christmas. The location is easily accessible because it is right under Prague’s arterial road. Recent statistics from the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) show an increase in the country’s population by 13,900 inhabitants, between the months of January and September 202o. CZSO attributes the increase in the country’s population to international migration. The population number in the Czech Republic rose by 13,900 to 10.71 million in the first nine months of the year, largely due to migration, according to the data released by the Czech Statistical Office (CSU) today. The number of newborn babies diminished by over 2,600 to 83,300. The number of immigrants reached 16,700, whilst 10,100 people emigrated from the Czech Republic. According to the CZSO, flows of both immigrants and emigrants were higher in the year-on-year comparison. Due to the large interest from the public, the Czech government wants to start free Covid-19 antigen testing for the public from Wednesday. The PM Andrej Babiš said that 5,200 general practitioners, 6,000 dentists, and 9,000 outpatient specialists could potentially be involved in the testing. The free Covid testing will be conducted at around 2,000 places, including existing testing centres and doctors’ surgeries. The country has already started using targeted antigen testing — which is faster and logistically easier than standard PCR tests but not as accurate — in homes for the elderly. “We want to enable all citizens to be tested voluntarily and free of charge with antigen tests.
