Czech Senate speaker Milos Vystrcil invoked a famous Cold War-era phrase by late US president John F. Kennedy as he delivered a landmark speech to Taiwan’s parliament Tuesday during a visit that has incensed Beijing. Vystrcil channeled Kennedy’s 1963 challenge to communism when he declared “Ich bin ein Berliner” to West Berlin citizens worried about the Soviet Union’s looming presence behind the Iron Curtain. Kennedy “used the phrase ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ to show his support for the people of Berlin and the highest values of freedom”, Vystrcil said. “Maybe I can be more humble, but allow me to use the same determined phrase to conclude my speech in your country’s parliament, in Taiwan — I am Taiwanese.” His final declaration — “I am Taiwanese” — was delivered in Mandarin and received a standing ovation from lawmakers on the self-ruled island. From Tuesday, September 1, new emergency measures against the spread of coronavirus will come into force. Face masks will be again mandatory in medical and social facilities, offices, all means of public transport, railway stations and polling stations. Moreover, Czechs will have to put on the famous roušky at Prague Airport and at public events where there are more than 100 people. For now, restaurants, and workspaces are excluded from the measure, although regulations might still change in the coming weeks. “We continue to maintain the necessary exemptions from wearing the face masks for children up to two years of age, persons with severe autism spectrum disorders, persons in a closed vehicle (if all members are from a common households) and public transport drivers who are alone in a closed cabin separate from the passenger compartment,” said the Chief Hygienist of the Czech Republic Jarmila Rážová. The Mattoni Usti nad Labem Half Marathon is one of four events in the RunCzech Running League which take place outside of Prague. Each one has developed greatly in terms of both elite and mass participation and the Mattoni Usti nad Labem event has been awarded the distinction of an IAAF Silver Label Road Race. The course leads alongside the river Elbe opening a view to impressive rock formations, Strekov castle and then crossing the area of a chemical factory which is a perfect example of industrial architecture of the First Republic. Some 90 ancient Egyptian artifacts will be on display for six months at the Prague National Museum in an exhibition titled “Kings of the Sun” as of the end of August. The artifacts were found during a Czech archaeological mission at the Abusir site, near Giza. There are treasures from the 3rd to the 1st millennium BC, such as the unique royal statue of King Raneferef, one of the four pharaohs buried in Abusir, or an extensive collection of statues from the tombs of Princess Sheretnebty and the scribe Nefer. The news of their discovery traveled the world in 2012. In a press statement on Friday, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Moustafa Waziri said that the exhibition would put on show around 90 ancient pieces unearthed by the Czech mission that was working in the “Abu Sir” archaeological area. “The artifacts include a bust of King Neferefre and a collection of statues from the Old Kingdom of Egypt,” he added. Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil and his delegation landed at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport at 11 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 30), kicking off the highest-level and highest-profile visit to Taiwan by Czech government officials in the history of the countries’ bilateral relations. Vystrcil will deliver a speech in Taiwan’s parliament and meet President Tsai Ing-wen during a five-day trip described by Taipei as standing up to “the intimidation of authoritarian China”. “The aim of this trip is to show that the Czech Republic is a free, sovereign and democratic country, and our parliamentary diplomacy, in particular the Senate, wants this country to act as Vaclav Havel and [Foreign Minister] Jiri Dienstbier set out. Czech President Milos Zeman has been discharged from hospital on Saturday, where he underwent hand surgery after an injury on Wednesday night. Zeman broke his right arm on Tuesday night after falling. “In the evening, the president watched television news and after the end, he did not use the support in the form of a stick nor the help of security, he tripped and broke his right arm,” said Zeman’s spokesman, Jiří Ovčáček. At the beginning of September, the Castle planned a presidential visit to South Moravian Region as Zeman was to start the school year at an event at a secondary school in Rajhrad. “We will solve that next week,” said Ovčáček, however, he is rather skeptical about making a three-day visit to the region. “It’s not even a general state of health, but of course if you have a broken arm and it is fixed, it causes discomfort,” the spokesman said, adding that convalescence is now a priority. In a follow-up report on the Czech Republic, the Council of Europe’s anti-money laundering body MONEYVAL concludes that the country has improved measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, but still needs to make progress in certain areas. Since the adoption of its mutual evaluation report in December 2018, the Czech Republic is reporting to MONEYVAL on an expedited timetable due to the high number of deficiencies identified in several key areas. The follow-up carried out by MONEYVAL has examined a range of legislative, regulatory, and institutional measures implemented by the Czech Republic to address these deficiencies. MONEYVAL notes progress and assigns the Czech Republic higher international compliance ratings in three key areas: the improvement of mechanisms for national cooperation and coordination to tackle money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF); the strengthening of countermeasures against countries and jurisdictions which represent a high ML/TF risk; and the removing of regulatory gaps for correspondent banking relationships, which will ensure greater transparency for bank-to-bank transactions.
